Let me tell you about this amazing guy I met, Aman Gupta Sir. You might know him from Shark Tank. I tried messaging him even before the first season, but of course, he didn't reply to this day. 

Then, at an award ceremony for my old company, I finally got to meet him. And let me tell you, he's the most down-to-earth guy ever.

He's really smart, you know? But not in a show-offy way. He's just really good at figuring things out. Like, he told us this story about when he was starting his company, Boat. He used to go to shops and ask for Boat headphones or other Boat stuff. The shopkeepers would say they didn't have any, but Aman would insist, saying he only wanted Boat products. That's how he got people talking about Boat in the markets of Delhi. He made sure everyone knew about his brand, even if they didn't have it in stock.

And he's got this cool trick for promoting his brand too. He always wears Boat t-shirts and carries a Boat watch. He says it grabs people's attention and it's free advertising, so why not?

But the best thing about Aman sir is how humble he is. Even though he's super successful, he treats everyone with respect. At the award ceremony, he took the time to talk to everyone and even took pictures with them. He never acts like he's better than anyone else. He's just a regular guy who happens to be good at what he does. And that's what makes him so special.

Rethinking "Top Voices": A Reflection on Experience and Expertise 

In an era where digital platforms shape our professional identities, LinkedIn’s "Top Voices" recognition has emerged as a coveted accolade. However, as I observe the evolving landscape of these recognitions, I can't help but reflect on what it truly means to be a "voice" in one's industry.

Recently, I've noticed a trend where individuals with relatively brief professional tenures—sometimes as little as one or two years—receive this title. This observation has led me to ponder the implications of equating short-term experience with expertise and influence.

While I commend LinkedIn for creating a space that celebrates contributions at every career stage, I question the message it sends about the depth of experience and knowledge required to shape and lead industry discussions. Is expertise now measured by one's ability to generate content, regardless of the years spent in the trenches, grappling with the complexities of our fields?

This reflection is not to diminish the achievements of those recognized; many offer fresh perspectives that invigorate our professional dialogues. Instead, it’s a call to reassess what it means to be a top voice. It’s about striking a balance between the enthusiasm of new entrants and the wisdom that comes with prolonged dedication to one’s craft.

In light of this, I’ve made a personal decision to step back from the title of "Top Voice" bestowed upon me by LinkedIn. This is not a repudiation of the honour, but a statement on what I believe thought leadership should encapsulate: a blend of innovation and experience, insight and endurance.

As we navigate our professional journeys, let's champion a community that values depth as much as it does visibility. Let’s advocate for a platform that equally recognizes the insights of seasoned veterans and the fresh perspectives of new voices. After all, the richness of our professional discourse is measured not by the length of our resumes, but by the depth and diversity of our conversations.

A young designer recently reached out to me, curious about why I don't share typical design tips like the "10 things every designer should do." 

My response was simple: I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to design. Design is not a uniform field—each client, project, goal, audience, and problem is unique. Moreover, each designer brings their own unique perspective and creativity to their work.

Attempting to standardise a creative process with generic guidelines can stifle the very essence of what makes design so powerful: the ability to innovate and adapt spontaneously. 

If I were to offer any advice, it would emphasise the importance of embracing spontaneity. If I had to list ten tips for designers, they would all be the same: Be spontaneous. This approach keeps the creative spirit alive and responsive to the ever-changing demands of design work.
