Koç University

I am a visiting lecturer in MBA and MS in Finance programs at Koc University. I teach Financial Econometrics and Valuation lectures to graduate students since 2013. 

During my PhD studies and my professional work experience, I realized my desire to channel my knowledge to a wider audience. Since 2013, I transferred this accumulated knowledge to more than 200 students at Koc University, where I taught Financial Econometrics and Company Valuation in MS in Finance and MBA programs. 

During my 15 years of professional work experience mostly in the area of investment advisory, I have learned about economic drivers and dynamics as well as various industries (banking, insurance, oil & gas, aviation, building materials, metals & mining, etc.) in the Emerging Markets space. I get acquainted with different capital markets products such as equity, fixed income and derivative instruments and advised institutional investors that have different investment criteria and horizons. Combining my strong academic background and theoretical knowledge in the area of Finance and my professional experience in the Finance industry, I helped students understand the theory behind key financial concepts along with their real world applications and I received good student reviews on these lectures.

I continued my role as CFO at Mintus on a part-time basis maintaining key finance functions such as financial reporting and analysis, regulatory compliance, budgeting and forecasting, and fundraising.

► I was the Chief Financial Officer at Mintus Group, an alternative investment platform that specializes in fine art. I built the finance function from scratch and developed the company’s cash flow, budgeting, and financial reporting systems in 3 months and achieved 20% in cost savings. 

► I was also responsible for Mintus' sales and distribution efforts. I developed business relationships with more than 30 financial institutions, wealth managers, and family offices and signed a number of distribution agreements to scale the institutional side of the business. 

► I also managed and led the the direct sales team. My team raised $4m from individual investors within 6 months after the launch of Mintus platform.

► I worked as a senior wealth manager at Bank. J. Safra Sarasin, covering high net worth individuals and corporates in Turkey, the Balkans, Greece, and Israel. 

► I raised and managed a client book of $130m and advised these clients on their multi-asset portfolios. My previous experience in the capital markets allowed me to establish a view on global equity, debt, and FX markets and advise clients to build a diversified portfolio with the best possible returns. 

► I also helped my clients plan for retirement and succession planning by putting together different and efficient structures.

I managed a team of 8 analysts covering Turkish equities and corporate bonds. Apart from overseeing the whole research coverage, I covered Turkish Banking Sector as the lead analyst. 

I have an ability to read people, situations well just by “gut feel”, which had helped me in this manager role. I connected with each team member and treated them with empathy. I could see that people liked working with me rather than for me and the turnover in the team during my leadership was the lowest than it has ever been. I always liked to help develop my team members’ skills, transferred as much information as possible. I probed and challenged my team on thorny subjects without creating conflict. While asking the difficult questions was my primary task, I never refrained from offering my support and guidance on problematic issues. I always believed that maintaining a constructive and diplomatic style is important.

I capitalized on the relationships that I built with global emerging market fund managers during my career at Deutsche Bank and brought significant amount of business to UNLU&Co by opening new trading lines with institutional investors such as Fidelity, GSAM, T Rowe Price, Blackrock and Genesis.

I have also led the research effort in several Equity Capital Market (ECM) transactions with a combined size of more than $1.0bn: IPOs, SPOs & block placements. I participated in M&A pitches, working collaboratively with the corporate finance team.

Over the years, I have invested in improving my communication skills further. I believe becoming a Professor in Finance and transferring my knowledge to graduate students have been an important contributor. I have also become the key spokesperson for UNLU&Co and had taken media training, which had helped me establish a strong media presence, making frequent TV appearances to comment on macroeconomic developments, sector and company outlooks along with stock recommendations.

Right after I graduated from Bogazici University in 2009, my desire to teach have led me to pursue a part-time academic career in addition to my full-time day job at Deutsche Bank. 

Initially, I wanted to teach what I do as a finance professional. At the time, I had 5 years of equity research (financial modelling) experience. I created and wrote an elective course named “Financial Modelling” and applied to a few private universities in Istanbul. Head of MS in Financial Engineering at Kadir Has University, Ms. Ayse Bilge liked the content of my proposed lecture and offered me a part-time job as visiting lecturer to teach in her program. 

I received good student reviews on this lecture, which was probably the first Financial Modelling lecture given at any university in Turkey at the time. One of the key reasons behind the success of this course was that it combined capital asset pricing theory with real world applications.

Following the success of this course, I was requested to prepare other courses.  In 2010, I prepared and started lecturing a relatively more theoretical course named “Corporate Finance” in the same program.
