Most supply chain problems are not operational problems.

On the surface?

Everything looks fine.

1.  3 Mistakes Supply Chain Analysts Make with Excel

❌ Mistake 1: Reporting totals without diagnosing gaps

In the dashboard:

3,355 shipped vs 3,243 delivered.

That’s a gap of 112.

The mistake? Stopping at the totals.

The real questions are:

Which region drives most of the 112 gap?

Is it a transport issue or warehouse issue?

Is this trend increasing month-over-month?


If you’re not investigating variance, you’re just reporting.



❌ Mistake 2: Ignoring regional performance differences

Look at “Orders Shipped vs Delivered by Region.”

North and East clearly move higher volumes.

But:

Which region has the highest delivery failure rate?

Is West underperforming relative to shipment volume?

Is South experiencing service inconsistency?


Most analysts build the chart.

Senior analysts interpret the operational story.



❌ Mistake 3: Not linking cost to performance

Now check:

Freight Cost vs Revenue by Month

Revenue is growing from January to June.

But freight cost is also increasing.

Questions that matter:

Is freight cost growing faster than revenue?

Is margin shrinking?

Are we paying more per shipment due to inefficiencies?


If your Excel dashboard doesn’t connect cost, service level, and revenue…

Operations won’t trust it.



2. Why Operations Teams Don’t Trust Dashboards

Imagine showing this dashboard to a warehouse manager.

If you can’t explain:

How Perfect Order Rate was calculated

Why Return Rate is 3%

Why April freight spike happened


They won’t use it.

Descriptive Statistics is not “basic.” It’s the foundation of every serious data analyst.

Let’s recap what we covered in my one-on-one session with my private student.

Most beginners rush to dashboards.
Intermediates rush to DAX. But professionals pause at descriptive statistics.

Before prediction.
Before machine learning.
Before optimization.
You must understand what your data is saying.

What is Descriptive Statistics?
Descriptive statistics simply answers one question:
“What is happening in this dataset?”

It summarizes raw data into meaningful insights using:
• Measures of Central Tendency
• Measures of Dispersion
• Distribution Analysis
• Data Shape & Outliers
Let’s break it down.

1.  Measures of Central Tendency
These tell us the “typical” value.
• Mean – The average
• Median – The middle value
• Mode – The most frequent value
Example: If delivery times are: 2, 3, 3, 4, 20 days
The mean may look fine.
But the median exposes reality.
And that 20-day outlier? That’s operational risk.

2. Measures of Dispersion (Variation)
This is where analysts level up.
Because averages can lie.
• Range
• Variance
• Standard Deviation
Two warehouses can have the same average delivery time.
But one has a high standard deviation.
That warehouse is inconsistent.
In business, inconsistency = cost.

3.  Distribution & Shape
Is your data:
• Normally distributed?
• Right-skewed?
• Left-skewed?
If customer demand is right-skewed,
you may experience stockouts during peak spikes.
If lead times are heavily skewed,
your supplier reliability is questionable.

4.  Outliers
Outliers are not mistakes.
They are signals.
• Fraud
• Supply disruption
• System error
• Human error
• Exceptional performance
Good analysts don’t delete outliers blindly.
They investigate them.

Why Descriptive Statistics Matters
Because:
• You can’t build good dashboards without understanding the numbers.
• You can’t build reliable forecasts without understanding variation.
• You can’t optimize what you haven’t summarized.

Every KPI in Excel.
Every measure in Power BI.
Every dashboard insight.
Starts with descriptive statistics.
If you skip this stage,
you are just decorating numbers.

As analysts, our job is simple:
Turn raw data into clarity.
And clarity begins with description.

I spent my weekend building a dashboard wireframe. Here's what I learned and why it matters for every supply chain professional.

Let me be honest with you.
I wasn't sure if I still had it.

Between coaching, curriculum design, and running the upcoming Supply Chain Analytics Bootcamp, I hadn't sat down to just build in a while. So this weekend, while working on a client project for a logistics manager, I decided to test myself.


I opened Excel. Pulled up a blank canvas. And built this.

A professional stakeholder dashboard wireframe from scratch.

But first, let me explain WHY dashboards matter in supply chain.

Supply chain is a world drowning in data. Procurement costs. Inventory turnover. Supplier lead times. On-time delivery rates. Freight costs per unit. Demand forecasts.

The data exists. It's always existed.
The problem? Most of it lives in spreadsheets nobody reads, reports nobody opens, and PowerPoints nobody saves.
A well-designed dashboard changes that entirely.

What makes a great supply chain dashboard?

After years of working with data across logistics and operations contexts, here's what I've learned:
1. Know your audience before you draw a single box.
A CEO needs trend lines and red flags. A warehouse manager needs daily throughput and stockout alerts. A logistics analyst needs route efficiency and delivery exceptions. Same data. Completely different dashboards.

2. Structure before visuals.
That wireframe you see above? I didn't start with colors or charts. I started with layout — where does the eye go first? What decision does this dashboard need to support? A wireframe is your thinking made visible.

3. Less is almost always more.
Every KPI tile, every chart, every filter competes for attention. If everything is important, nothing is. The best dashboards I've seen tell ONE story clearly, not ten stories poorly.

4. Context beats raw numbers.
"Delivery rate: 74%" means nothing without context. Is that up from 61% last month? Is the industry benchmark 85%? Numbers without context are just noise. Great dashboards build context directly into the design.

5. Make it actionable.
The dashboard should answer: So what do I do next? If a stakeholder looks at your dashboard and can't make a decision within 60 seconds, it needs a redesign.

Why supply chain professionals NEED to learn this.

We're entering an era where data literacy is no longer optional in logistics and supply chain. Companies are hiring analysts, not just operators. The people who understand the data and can communicate it visually? They're the ones getting promoted, winning contracts, and leading teams.
