Early in my cybersecurity journey, I was in a room where questions felt risky.
Every time I asked why, I worried it sounded like I didn’t belong.
When I shared ideas, they were brushed aside, until someone more senior repeated them later.
And slowly, without realising it, I stopped raising my hand.

Not because I wasn’t capable.
But because the culture taught me that curiosity looked like incompetence and ambition looked like disruption.

And I see this pattern constantly now, especially in cybersecurity and early leadership:

I was wrong.

My biggest growth came from mistakes, the uncomfortable ones.
The projects that didn’t land.
The conversations I handled poorly.

You don’t need to “start over” to move into cybersecurity.

I nearly talked myself out of exploring cyber because I didn’t come from a technical background.
No computer science degree.
No SOC experience.
No “traditional” cyber job title.

What I did have was experience in risk, documentation, stakeholder management, and decision-making, but I didn’t realise those counted. 💡

I assumed cybersecurity was only for people who had been technical from day one.
That I needed years of retraining before I was even allowed to try.

So I waited.
And waiting cost me time.

When I finally explored cyber properly, I learned something important:
many cyber roles aren’t about tools first, they’re about judgement, communication, and risk thinking.

I didn’t need to erase my past.
I needed to translate it.

Once I reframed my experience, interviews made sense.
Hiring conversations changed.
Confidence followed.

Here’s the truth career changers rarely hear:
cybersecurity needs people who understand business, people, and risk, not just code.

If you’re waiting until you feel “technical enough,” you may already be qualified for the right role.

Don’t disqualify yourself early.
Don’t assume your background is a weakness.

People think “Cybersecurity Analyst” is a single, clearly defined role.
It isn’t.

The same role can appear under many titles:
Security Operations Analyst, SOC Analyst, Cyber Defense Analyst, Incident Response Analyst, IT Security Analyst, Threat Monitoring Analyst.
Different names.

Often the same core responsibility.

➡️ 𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐣𝐨𝐛?
A cybersecurity analyst is a first-line defender.
You monitor systems and networks for unusual behaviour.
You investigate alerts to determine what’s real and what’s noise.
You assess impact, identify root causes, and support remediation.
You document everything clearly so others can act fast.
This isn’t glamorous work.
It’s focused, detail-heavy, and critical.
Documentation alone can make or break incident response.
Clear notes save hours.
Poor notes create chaos.

🔴 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠
Many assume they need:
• Every tool listed in job descriptions
• Every certification upfront

That’s not how hiring actually works.

Job descriptions are often wish lists, not minimum requirements.

𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 “𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿” 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵.

For a long time, my career lived outside the cybersecurity bubble. I worked, learned, grew, but something always felt incomplete. I knew technology was shaping the future, yet I wasn’t part of the room where those decisions were being made.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

It meant unlearning. Starting again. Asking uncomfortable questions. Rebuilding my professional identity from the ground up.
And honestly? That was the most powerful part.

Cybersecurity didn’t just teach me tools or frameworks, it showed me potential. The potential to protect systems, people, businesses, and futures. The potential to build a career that’s not just relevant, but resilient.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻.
I didn’t create it as a company.
I created it as a bridge, for people like me.
Because here’s the truth most people don’t talk about:

I want to talk about something uncomfortable, but important.
Many people tell me they want to transition into cybersecurity.

They see the opportunity.
They feel the pull.
And then they stop.
Not because they aren’t capable.
Not because they lack potential.

But because they’re afraid to invest in themselves.
Somewhere along the way, we were taught that education ends with a degree.

That learning after college is optional.
That paying for education is risky.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘂𝘀:
School happened by default.
College happened by momentum.

But intentional education is a choice, and that’s what makes it powerful.
When you consciously choose what to learn, why to learn it, and how it connects to your future, something shifts. You stop collecting certificates and start building capability.

I see incredibly talented people limiting themselves because they’ve been taught to fear investment. They underestimate their ability to grow. They wait for confidence instead of building it.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆? 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗱.
Not because people don’t buy.

Cybersecurity is growing fast.
But one role consistently stands out to me:

𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 (𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿).
Not because it looks “cool” in movies.
But because it creates real-world impact.
Here’s why I believe it deserves serious focus.

🔹 𝟭. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹
Pentesters are in demand.
Six-figure salaries aren’t a fantasy, they’re a realistic outcome with the right skills, experience, and mindset.
Organizations will always pay to understand their weaknesses before attackers do.

🔹 𝟮. 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸
This role rarely gets boring.
Every engagement is a new puzzle:
• Understanding threat models
• Bypassing defenses
• Thinking like an attacker

If you enjoy problem-solving, curiosity, and creative thinking, this role rewards that deeply.

You don’t need to quit your job to enter cybersecurity, you need roots.
You’ve probably never heard of 𝗡𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶.

But it might be the most overlooked strategy for building a 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿.

In Japan, when a tree is moved, they don’t rip it out of the ground.
They prepare it.

They:
• Loosen the soil around the roots
• Trim just enough to reduce shock
• Water consistently
• Allow new roots to grow inward

Only then do they move the tree.
Because now, it can survive.

That preparation process is called 𝗡𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶.
It literally means “turning the roots.”

Slow.
Intentional.
Strategic.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝘀

Now compare that to how most people approach a move into cybersecurity.

They:
• Sit with dissatisfaction for years
• Panic when burnout or layoffs hit
• Enrol in random bootcamps
• Quit roles too early, or too late
• Spend months undoing rushed decisions

I see this pattern constantly.

People don’t struggle in cybersecurity because it’s too hard.
They struggle because they move too fast, without roots.

𝗡𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
A smart cyber transition looks quiet on the outside.

It looks like:
• Exploring cyber roles before announcing a pivot
• Talking to people already working in cybersecurity
• Learning fundamentals while staying employed
• Building labs, projects, or exposure before resigning
• Creating financial and emotional safety first

This isn’t hesitation.

This is 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Cyber careers don’t reward:
• Urgency
• Panic
• Noise

They reward:
• Patience
• Clarity
• Preparation

It gives you leverage instead of pressure.

(Especially for cybersecurity and adjacent roles)

1️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
Cybersecurity isn’t about tools first.
It’s about asking why, identifying risk, and understanding complex systems.
This is where experience turns into 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

2️⃣ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
AI can replicate patterns.
It cannot connect:
• Human context
• Business impact
• Ambiguity and uncertainty
Security decisions still depend on 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁.

3️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Careers no longer move in straight lines.
Resilience isn’t avoiding disruption.
It’s the ability to adapt when plans break — and keep moving forward.

4️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱
Your expertise has a shelf life.
Your ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn does not.
That’s the real competitive advantage.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁
I’m still relevant today, not because I’m smarter.
I’m relevant because I never stopped 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Cybersecurity rewards people who are:
• Curious
• Intentional
• Adaptable

Not people chasing titles.

If your career feels like it’s plateauing, you’re not behind.
You’re just early to the 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁.

Clarity beats panic.
Preparation beats reinvention.

English wasn’t my first language.

Confidence didn’t come naturally.

Yoruba is my first language.
English came later, and I still struggle with it more than most people realise.

I’m also dyslexic.

That usually surprises people. They tell me I’m “well spoken” or that I “do so well,” so surely it can’t be true. But fluency doesn’t cancel difficulty. It just hides the effort.

Behind the scenes, I reread things multiple times. I second-guess myself. I battle self-doubt far more than I let on.

I also train Muay Thai, and I’m currently managing a torn ligament that flares up when it chooses. Some days my body reminds me to slow down, whether I like it or not.

What keeps me moving forward is perspective, and a mentor who constantly reminds me not to shrink my goals to match my fears. Someone who pushes me beyond what I think is possible, especially on the days I hesitate.

Here’s the truth:
I still struggle with confidence.
I still feel nervous before opportunities.

And I train people to overcome these same barriers because it’s a lesson I’m learning too.

Fear doesn’t disappear before growth.
You learn to walk forward while it’s still there.

Don’t let nerves, doubt, or fear talk you out of rooms you’ve earned the right to be in.

Sometimes courage looks like showing up anyway.

High performance doesn’t equal leadership.

Leadership is evaluated differently.

Being good at your job doesn’t automatically prepare you for leadership.

Early in my career, I believed progression worked like this:
deliver consistently, stay reliable, and eventually be recognised.

What I didn’t understand then is that leadership is assessed on an entirely different signal.

I watched highly capable cyber professionals stall, not because they lacked skill, but because their value wasn’t visible beyond execution. They were trusted to do so, but not yet trusted to decide.

Leadership isn’t about mastering more tools.
It’s about how you frame risk, communicate trade-offs, and influence decisions when certainty doesn’t exist.

My own growth accelerated when I stopped waiting to be “ready” and started positioning my thinking: 

• explaining impact, not just activity
• aligning security work to business priorities
• showing judgement, not just output

That shift changed the conversations around me.
Opportunities arrived sooner. Trust followed naturally.

Here’s what many early-career cyber professionals miss:
leaders are selected for judgement, not effort alone.

If you’re delivering well but growth feels slow, it’s rarely a capability gap, it’s a leadership signal gap.

Over the years, I’ve seen highly capable professionals become the weakest link —
not because they were careless,

Good cyber hygiene isn’t about expensive tools.
It’s about consistent, boring, repeatable habits.

𝗔 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁

1️⃣ 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸
Urgency is the oldest trick in the attacker’s playbook.
Before clicking any link or attachment, pause.
Check the sender, the tone, and the URL.
That three-second pause is often the difference between being safe and being compromised.

2️⃣ 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲
Those update notifications aren’t interruptions.
They’re protection.
Every delayed update is an open door someone else already knows about.
Hit “update” when it appears — not later.

3️⃣ 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀
One password reused everywhere is one failure away from total exposure.
Use long, unique passwords.
A password manager helps.
Small effort.
Massive payoff.

4️⃣ 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲
Stepping away from your laptop? Lock it.
Working on public Wi-Fi? Protect it.
Cyber hygiene is just digital door-closing.

5️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁
Threats evolve constantly.
Awareness must too.
Read one cyber article a week.
Follow one credible voice.
Learning a little keeps you ahead a lot.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀
You don’t need to be technical to protect your digital world.
You just need consistency.
Cybersecurity isn’t a one-time setup.

It’s a habit.

And habits protect more than data.
They protect trust, credibility, and careers.

CYBER HYGIENE HABITS

“Work smarter” sounds beautiful.

Reality? Context still matters.

“Work smarter, not harder” gets shared a lot.
But early in your career, and especially in cyber, it’s incomplete advice.

Because before you can work smarter, you often need:
– pattern recognition
– exposure to complexity
– uncomfortable repetition
– time in the weeds

You don’t shortcut judgement.
You earn it.

In my early roles, the smartest decisions I make today came from:

a) staying late to understand failures
b) sitting in rooms I wasn’t confident in
c) learning how the business actually worked
d) watching what broke under pressure

Efficiency without understanding creates fragile outcomes.
Strategy without experience creates noise.

The shift happens when effort becomes intentional:

– not more hours, but better questions
– not speed, but sequencing
– not hustle, but leverage

This is what I teach leaders and career pivoters:
Build depth first.
Then optimise.

Because “smart” work only works
after you understand the system.

Degrees matter far less than:
• How you think

Reality:
Many cybersecurity roles don’t involve coding at all.
Large parts of the field focus on:
• Governance
• Risk
• Compliance
• Strategy
• Policy
• Leadership
Cybersecurity is broader than tools and syntax.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟯: “𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆.”
Reality:
Unplanned pivots are risky.
Structured transitions are not.
With clarity, preparation, and mentorship, professionals pivot into cybersecurity successfully, every single day.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟰: “𝗠𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁.”
Reality:
Experience in HR, operations, marketing, finance, or project management brings something technical-only paths often lack:
Real-world context.
Security exists to protect businesses and people, not just systems.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟱: “𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲.”
Reality:
The field is evolving rapidly.
Diverse professionals are shaping:
• Security decisions
• Risk strategy
• Policy frameworks
• Leadership outcomes
Cybersecurity needs different perspectives to work well.

Cybersecurity isn’t about being technical first.

The clearer you are about what energizes you, the faster you grow — and the longer you last.
