Data insights begin in wonder. Improving a process, a product, or understanding people better through analytics starts with questions that you want data to help answer. As a philosopher, I ask the “why” and “how” questions that help clarify what you care about and identify the problems you want to solve. During my 10 years in higher education, I have taught students to better understand their moral values and what it means to reason well. I asked questions, listened deeply, and challenged students to help them clarify what they care about and define the problems that matter to them. As a researcher and instructor, I have also: ● written reports and communicated insights from my research to audiences with varying degrees of expertise ● managed student projects by developing key performance indicators, defining scope of work and timelines for work across multiple groups, and creating work breakdown structures that allow regular feedback ● gathered and analyzed data on student performance and platform engagement to find pain points and create tailored plans for student success ● co-created and organized a graduate student speaker series to help other grad students share their work, collaborate, and get feedback I am transitioning from academia to data analytics, where my humanistic background helps me understand what someone cares about and my data-informed approach helps me find their pain points and advocate for their success. My passion is unlocking worlds of information for others to empower their decisions. I see the power that has as a first-generation Chinese American when I translate English for my parents. I see it when my students get an “aha” moment. How we understand the world around us, who and what we trust, especially in the face of big data and AI, has profound implications for who we are as humans and how we express ourselves. As a philosophically-inclined data analyst, I will ask critical questions of stakeholders to clarify business problems that ensure I tell a story with data insights that add value.
