This week I’m joining the Belgian economic mission in Calofornia to explore the ecosystem of AI and emerging technology in Silicon Valley.

Looking forward to exploring what’s next and sharing a few reflections over the week. Here are some initial observations.

Yesterday I drove in a Waymo to my hotel, these autonomous vehicles are all over the city. 
This morning’s walk to Salesforce HQ every billboard along the way seemed to feature a AI or agent services. 
Yesterday I ran around the city with an AI engineer at Meta  
It’s hard to miss how deeply technology is woven into daily life here.

First stop of this mission is Salesforce HQ in San Fransisco listening to perspectives from Robin Washington Marc Escobosa Piet Demunter and Matthias Diependaele  

Great to already listen to a first update in ‘De 7’ De Tijd  about this Belgian economic mission. 

And ok, I must admit getting the chance to see LeBron James and Bronnie in a basketball game yesterday was unbelievable. 🏀 thx for the invite Erik Vandebroek and great do do this with you Philippe De Ridder

I had the opportunity to visit the NVIDIA HQ in Palo Alto today. 
It was a reminder that opportunity is there for those who take risks. 
Here are a few things that I take away from the sessions we had:

“We’re only one mistake away from irrelevance.”
👉 In this space, advantage is temporary. The moment you stop learning or tightening the loop, you fall behind. Even for NVIDIA...

“The biggest opportunity today is in the upper layer of AI, understanding business adoption and creating ROI.”
👉 Technology isn’t the bottleneck anymore; translating it into business impact is where most organisations get stuck.

“Proprietary data x existing models is where value is created.”
👉 Owning unique data and knowing how to use it is the most defensible position for organisations.

“Every enterprise needs its own AI flywheel.”
👉 Don’t work towards a finalised solution but towards a self-learning system that keeps improving and where every use case strengthens the next.

“It’s not about building the model, it’s about turning your data into value.”
👉 The focus is shifting from creating models to making them matter.

I just saw the new ChatGPT shopping feature go live, and honestly, it’s a bigger step than many realize.

I shared my Point of View on the launch of A2P last week, but this is a big next step. Now, users can buy items inside ChatGPT without ever leaving the conversation. 

What’s interesting to me:
ChatGPT no longer just recommends. It transacts.
Merchants keep control of payments, fulfillment, returns. ChatGPT acts as the agent in between.

The underlying tech (ACP) “Agentic Commerce Protocol” is open source. That means this could extend far beyond just one platform. 

To me, this signals that the next phase of commerce won’t be about interfaces, it’ll be about agents purchasing products for us.

We’re heading into shopping journeys where discovery, decision, and checkout blend together.

What AI leaders get right and others miss

I’ve supported dozens of companies on their AI transformation journeys. Some have made real, measurable shifts in how they operate. Others, despite similar ambitions and resources, haven’t.

I'm spending the week in the Bay Area, visiting NVIDIA, Adobe, Salesforce, Microsoft with Philippe De Ridder and one question keeps coming back to me:

Why do some organizations truly lead in AI while others barely move forward, even with the same ambition and resources?

When I take a closer look at the ones that succeed, I start to see some patterns. Here’s what I believe they get right that others miss.

1. Leaders are committed that AI will reshape their industry, not just make things 
2. They move AI outside of IT, into the business
3. They prioritize domain areas, not individual use cases for AI
4. They look at second-order effects and measure beyond efficiency
5. They invest in the foundations, not just the front end
