Employees Types


The Bhagwad Gita states that the material nature constitutes of  three gunas (loosely translated as inherent nature, quality or property ) — 

sattva - harmony, balance, joy, and intelligence, and goodness
rajas - energy, action, change,  movement, and passion
tamas - darkness, inertia, inactivity, ignorance, and materiality

Since the body, mind, and intellect are material in nature, they too possess these three modes, and a combination of these gunas forms the basis of one’s character.  These forces are present within us at all times and manifest in our reactions to certain situations and experiences.

 However, they do not exist in pure form. One of the gunas is always more dominant than the other two. 

In an organization also, the employees can be categorized in the above three  gunas -

1. The satvik types- They are good, calm, and harmonious. They follow rules. They are contented in the work.  They look for the overall progress of the organization. They are not so much influenced by promises of rewards and recognition. For them the work completed well and successfully in itself is sufficient. They are the silent workers. Values of ethical conduct appeal to them. 

2. The rajasik- They are passionate, and energetic. They crave for recognition and rewards. They complete the work successfully expecting rewards and recognition. They can be motivated by setting targets and giving promotions, incentives etc. They value ethics to the extent it is beneficial to them. 

3. The tamasik types- They are ignorant  or feign ignorance out of laziness, and to avoid work. They create trouble for others,  look for shortcuts, look for ways to pull down others.  For them any training, coaching, mentoring etc. do not help. Ethics do not appeal to them.

An organization needs to identify the three categories and take action-

1.  Weed out tamasik employees, managers at the earliest opportunity. 
2. Motivate the the rajasik employees. . Provide rewards and recognition to them.
3. Provide a good healthy work environment for the satvik. Appreciate their work.

Lithium Ion Battery Assembly and Hazards

A lithium-ion battery is made up of several modules, each of which in turn is made up of several constituent cells – the basic electro-chemical units.

 In a lithium-ion cell, the cathode active material and the anode active material are coated onto thin metal foils called current collectors. The cathode material is coated on an aluminium foil, while the graphite anode is coated on a copper foil. A liquid electrolyte is filled between the electrodes to permit the movement of lithium ions. 

This electrolyte usually contains lithium salts (for example, LiPF6) and a solvent (for example, diethyl carbonate). 

A separator membrane (made of a specially prepared polymer, like high-density polyethylene or polyolefin) is required to physically separate the two electrodes while allowing the ions to pass through it unimpeded. This protects the cell from an internal short circuit, which would happen if the two electrodes made contact. 

Cells are available in various forms, like cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch. 

Primary (non-rechargeable) lithium batteries are comprised of single-use cells containing metallic lithium anodes. 
Secondary (rechargeable) lithium ion batteries are comprised of rechargeable cells containing an intercalated lithium compound for the anode and cathode. 
Single lithium-ion batteries or cells have an operating voltage (V) that ranges from 3.6–4.2V. Lithium ions move from the anode to the cathode during discharge. The ions reverse direction during charging. 
The lithiated metal oxide or phosphate coating on the cathode defines the “chemistry” of the battery.

What can happen to a Lithium Ion Battery?

Battery damage may not always be visible. Events that may damage a Li-ion battery include a fall of 12 inch or greater; crash with a speed of 20mph; puncture by a sharp object; expansion due to overheating. 

Use of a damaged battery may lead to thermal runaway and subsequent fire.

When a cell’s internal temperature and pressure rise faster than the rate at which they can be dissipated, cell overheating will occur. In series or parallel connected strings of batteries, high connection resistance from a poor electrical connection can lead to overheating.

The overheating of a given cell may produce enough heat to cause adjacent cells to overheat in response. If the cell does not return to room temperature it may vent and catch fire, or explode.

An exploded cell is the result of an overheated or mechanically damaged cell. After the explosion of a lithium-ion battery, the room could fill quickly with dense white smoke that could cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract, eyes and skin.

Once the battery begins to vent flammable vapors, it may quite easily catch fire.

Lithium Ion Battery Thermal Runaway Process

The first stage, metal ion dissolution, occurs when heat disrupts the stable crystal structure of cathode materials, causing metal ions to migrate into the electrolyte up to around 90°C. 
Following this, the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film decomposition phase begins at approximately 90–180 °C, where the SEI layer decomposes, releasing more heat and further dissolving metal ions. The SEI is a passive film on the anode's surface formed during initial charging cycles, which stabilizes the battery's operation.
At the next stage, the reaction between the Lithium and electrolyte commences, as the lithiated carbon (anode material) reacts with the electrolyte, releasing heat and accelerating the temperature rise. This reaction triggers a chain reaction of degradation processes. 
Around 130–225°C, the separator melting phase begins, where the separator, a critical component preventing direct contact between the anode and cathode, starts to melt.
Following this, the micro inner short circuit phase may occur, with small internal short circuits forming as the cathode and anode come into direct contact, further raising the temperature. 
At approximately 160–280°C, the safety venting stage occurs, as the internal pressure rises due to gas formation from electrolyte decomposition, and the safety vent opens to slow the runaway process.
The separator break up phase occurs around 160–250°C, leading to large-scale internal short circuits within the battery, causing a rapid surge in temperature. This large-scale inner short circuit results in a massive release of energy, accelerating the temperature rise and leading to the decomposition of the cathode material and electrolyte, typically at temperatures above 200°C.

Data Centers and Climate Change

I got a few queries on how and what to check for when selecting data centers when looking at the vulnerability to climate change.

While selecting data centers (DC), most IT firms concentrate on the IT security capabilities, up time, down time, racks etc. Vulnerability to climate change is far from their mind.

I am sharing few points on what to check in data centers

1. Power - Look at the power source. Where are they getting power?  Is it a grid or from a fixed plant? How much dependent is the DC on fossil fuel? What is the PUE? Do they have any renewable source of energy? Where is it used? Is there any instance power supply was interrupted due to cyclone, rain or other climate-related event?

2. Water - How much water is used? Where do they get water from? In time of water stress (like summer) what alternate arrangements do they have for water? What will happen is there is water shortage? Arrangements for water conservation, harvest etc.?

3. Rain/Thunderstorm/Cyclone- What kind of climate is there normally? How much rain has occurred historically (average/ maximum in day/maximum in a hour etc)? Has there been any incident of flooding in the area? What happens if there is waterlogging? 

These are just few indicative questions that need to be asked from an operational perspective. Further questions on policies, objective and the top management awareness on the subject, risk assessment on climate change etc. can be verified.

How Sustainable is Renewable Energy?

It is said that the energy sector is the source of around three-quarters of greenhouse gas emissions today and holds the key to averting the worst effects of climate change. 

We believe that replacing polluting coal, gas and oil based energy  by renewable sources, such as wind or solar, would dramatically reduce carbon emissions. Renewable energy sources include - Solar, Wind, Geo-thermal, Hydropower, Ocean Energy, Bio Energy.

We have been hearing about renewable energy as the magic wand for all our energy woes. 

The UN website states " Renewable energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Sunlight and wind, for example, are such sources that are constantly being replenished. Renewable energy sources are plentiful and all around us."

It is the last line which got me thinking- Is renewable energy really plentiful and all around us. 

Climate change can affect our so called "renewable" energy sources.

Lets us consider the most common "renewable" energy sources.

Hydropower 
 Changing annual or seasonal patterns can impact river flows and water levels affecting production. Hydropower capacity can be affected by reduced rain and therefore reduced water availability for hydroelectric generation. 

Wind Energy
Changes in wind speed can reduce generation as turbines cannot operate in very high or very low winds. Changes in daily or seasonal distribution of wind can affect the match between wind energy input to the grid and daily load demand. Changes (increase) in temperature will lead to slight decline in air density and power output. 

Solar Energy
Changing climate can change sunlight patterns and availability thereby reducing solar energy generation. . Changes (increase) in mean temperature would negatively affect the efficiency of the cells and therefore the power output. Changes in solar irradiation and cloudiness would affect solar power output. Changes in dirt, dust, snow, atmospheric particles etc. would decrease energy output. 

 There is no "permanent", "sustainable", "renewable" energy sources. 

Even renewables are vulnerable to climate change.

 It was a quiet peaceful afternoon when I checked into the New Delhi Terminal 1 last Saturday. It was a false sense of calmness with no inkling of the roller coaster ride. 
Indigo flight scheduled for 9.00pm and scheduled to reach Kochi at 2.20am with a 90mins changeover at Mumbai -quite enough normally. I had a training session at 10am the next day and I was confident of being able to reach well in time.
At 8.09pm around, the sense of comfort was jarred by a sms. The flight was delayed by 35 mins. I calmed my heart. To assure myself, I asked the Indigo staff. He assured me "Sir, Your flight is in the same terminal. You will reach in time." He continued "One of the runway is under maintenance and therefore there is a restriction on flight take-off and landing." The heart felt assured even though my brain said something else. The boarding started past the revised ETD. The flight captain announced the flying time of one hour forty-five minutes. I was still optimistic. The flight finally took off after 9.35pm. The flight landed sometime near 12.00pm.
 I had no hope but NO, there was this person asking for passengers with connecting flight to Kochi. He said to quickly reach the departure gate. My hopes went high. Notwithstanding the long day, I ran putting my ultramarathon training into good use. Running through the transfer security gate and reaching Terminal 50. All my raised expectations were dashed when I saw the sign " Boarding Gate Closed". The  attendant very politely explained "Sir, The gate is closed. Please go to the Indigo counter". Seeing my face and wanting to calm me added "Other passengers are there too". Again after a long walk to the counter, I met the other "lucky" people. I asked the Indigo staff for the earliest flight to Kochi. She gave an option which was via Bangalore and expected to reach Kochi by 9.20am. 
It was around 1.30am by the time the boarding pass was issued along with complimentary snacks. The flight to Bangalore was at 2.20am and boarding started around 2.00am. This time I was not surprised and not disturbed as I had enough time for the flight to Kochi.
 The flight reached around 4.20am or so. 
 Around the same time I received a message that the Kochi Indigo flight would start 10 minutes before the scheduled time due to "operational" reasons. The message raised my hopes again of reaching on time before the training started.
 Alas, just before the scheduled boarding, an announcement "The oncoming flight has been delayed, and the boarding will be delayed by 15 mins." Again the sinking feeling. Finally the flight to Kochi took off. The flight landed and reached the parking lot after 15 mins past the scheduled time. 
Out of two mysteries in life- the first God, and airlines, I understand God a little, the second I don't at all.
 Any way utilised my Sunday morning by walking 6 kilometres in the airport and completing two trainings. Not bad at all.
 I reached home at 10.40 am and delivered my training.

Why we find it difficult to stick to our decisions?

Every  journey of self improvement starts with a good intention. We all have this intention of improving ourselves in our minds. We also take "Pratigya" (pledge) that we will stop eating junk, we will start exercising, we will have good nutritious food etc. etc. 

But we falter. Why is this so?

Yesterday, in my post on sustainable decisions, I categorised decisions in many ways.

Today I will discuss just two aspects "Shreya" and "Preya".

The Katha Upanishad uses two words to help us see which course of action will lead to trouble in the long run and which will lead to improved, loving living. 

These words apply to every choice, in every circumstance.

Shreya means choosing the best consequences, whether it feels good or not-often forgoing a temporary pleasure for the sake of a lasting benefit.

Preya is what we like, what pleases us, what offers immediate gratification to our senses, feelings and self-will; without providing us with a lasting benefit in the long term. 

 We must learn to discriminate between what is good and what is pleasurable. 

 This lack of discrimination is the source of the greatest danger to health, to security, to personal relations and to life itself. 

In daily living, discrimination means making wise choices; knowing what to do and what not to do.

 So to tread the path of Shreya, set a goal. It could be a small goal. And, however small at first, and honour it no matter what.

 Each time you honour your goal, you are strengthening your sense of discrimination and discipline. And as you continue doing this, you will slowly develop the power of discipline and enhance your dicriminatory power.

Fire Risk Assessment on Lithium Ion Battery Manufacturing 

Fire risk assessment in lithium-ion battery manufacturing is critical due to the inherent risks associated with these batteries. These batteries contain flammable electrolytes and are sensitive to external factors like heat and physical damage, making them prone to thermal runaway and fire. 

Assessments include evaluating the 
1. manufacturing process, 
2. storage conditions, 
3. handling procedures, 
4. emergency response plans. 

Mitigation strategies should include 
1. fire detection and suppression systems, 
2. proper storage and handling practices, 
3. employee training, and 
4. regular maintenance of equipment 

to minimize the risk of fire incidents and ensure a safe working environment.

Points to check when conducting a fire risk assessment in lithium-ion battery manufacturing-

1. Battery Chemistry and Properties: Understand the specific characteristics of lithium-ion batteries, including their composition, potential for thermal runaway, and the materials used in their construction.
2. Manufacturing Process: Evaluate the manufacturing process from start to finish, including material storage, mixing, coating, and assembly, to identify potential ignition sources and fire hazards.
3. Storage and Handling: Assess the storage and handling practices for batteries and raw materials, considering factors such as temperature control, segregation of incompatible materials, and proper containment measures.
4. Equipment and Machinery: Inspect equipment and machinery used in the manufacturing process for potential fire hazards, such as overheating, electrical faults, or mechanical failures.
5. Fire Detection and Suppression Systems: Ensure that adequate fire detection and suppression systems are in place, including smoke detectors, heat sensors, fire alarms, and appropriate fire extinguishing agents.
6. Emergency Response Plan: Develop and implement an emergency response plan specific to lithium-ion battery fires, including evacuation procedures, communication protocols, and training for employees.
7. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards (such as BIS, IEC, ISO, AIS etc.) related to safety in battery manufacturing.
8. Continuous Improvement: Regularly review and update the fire risk assessment and mitigation measures based on new information, changes in the manufacturing process, or lessons learned from incidents or near misses.

Lithium Ion Battery 


In 2023, the production capacity of lithium-ion battery in India was around 18 Gigawatt hours. It was estimated the value will increase to almost 150 Gigawatt hours in 2030. During the same year, the battery market will reach six billion dollars in the country.

Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small amount of space. When that energy is released in an uncontrolled manner, it generates heat, which can turn certain internal battery components into flammable and toxic gases.

Lithium-ion battery fires can happen due to reasons such as physical damage (e.g., the battery is penetrated or crushed or exposed to water), electrical damage (e.g., overcharging or using charging equipment not designed for the battery), exposure to extreme temperatures, and product defects.

Lithium ion battery fires are unique due to the chances of thermal runaway and the release of heat, smoke, the release of toxic gases, and the potential for explosions. 

If you are manufacturing Lithium Ion battery or assembling equipment using Lithium ion battery, a thorough risk assessment is required.

Social Life Cycle Assessment 

Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) is a methodology to assess the social impacts of products and services4 across their life cycle (e.g. from extraction of raw material to the end-of-life phase, e.g. disposal). 

You may ask "What is the social impact of a product?"

To give you an example -
Few products have a negative impact on the consumer. e.g. alcohol and cigarettes. i.e. the products are not good for the consumer. 

Many others may be good for the consumer but may not be good for the employees because of the way it is manufactured. e.g. many products are made in poor working conditions, with low salary, unsafe conditions etc. 

While the former is very visible, the latter is not visible to the stakeholders like customers and investor etc.

And there are many products and services where the impact is more further upstream. i.e. many organizations outsource their process or get their supplies from other places where employees are forced to work in extremely  poor and unsafe conditions  forced labour, bonded labour. They may employ child labour also. 

In such conditions, the product consumer may be unaware of the conditions and thereby by purchasing the product are partially responsible for the continuity of the practice. 


S-LCA offers a systematic assessment framework that combines quantitative as well as qualitative data.  It provides information on social and socio-economic aspects for decision-making, in the prospect to improve the social performance of an organization and ultimately the well-being of stakeholders.

Decisions and Sustainable Decisions

What does it mean to "decide" or "to take a decision"?

The origin of word  "decide" was from the Latin dēcīdere, literally, “to cut off".

What is to be cut off? The alternate choices not be taken i.e.  eliminate the alternatives. 

So when we are deciding on something, we are in fact eliminating all other alternatives. 

Decisions are can be categorized in many ways -

1. Reversible and irreversible
2. One time or a continuous action 
3. Short time impact or long term impact
4. Easy or difficult to implement
5. Good and Not good
6. Pleasant and not pleasant 

I will come to the points no 5 later in another post. 

Some decisions can be altered according to the situation but some are impossible to change. 

Let us take one example-
1. I decide to run daily. This is difficult decision because it is easy to reverse my decision on any of the day if I have not removed the alternatives. As long as the alternative exists, there is a possibility of reversal. I may switch between going to the gym, taking up cycling or continuing to run or not doing anything. It has a long time impact. It is a good decision but may not be a pleasant decision. 

2. I decide to eat a pizza. It is one time decision. It is irreversible decision. Once I eat it, it is done (irreversible). I cannot undo it nor modify it. It is not a good decision but it can be pleasant decision.  

So how does that help me?

A life changing decision might be good but might be unpleasant. When I am taking a unpleasant, difficult life changing good decision, I need to ensure that other alternatives are cut-off by making changes in my life and habits. 

If I am deciding to stop smoking, I need to make changes so that the other alternative does not arise. For example, I need to dissociate from those who smoke. I may have to change my daily routine. I may have to "decide" to carry out some other alternate action.

The difficulty and the impact depends upon many factors.

But no matter, who I am, I need to choose. I need to decide. And I need to follow my decision.

No one can take a decision and implement for me. Even God will not implement a decision for me. 

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 18, Verse 63
Bhagwan Krishna says-
"iti te jñānam ākhyātaṁ guhyād guhyataraṁ mayā I
vimṛiśhyaitad aśheṣheṇa yathechchhasi tathā kuru" II

Thus, I have explained to you this knowledge that is more secret than all secrets. Ponder over it deeply, and then do as you wish.

Warmer average temperatures will lead to hotter days and more frequent and longer heat waves. These changes will lead to an increase in heat-related deaths. Exposure to extreme heat can lead to heat stroke and dehydration.

Secondly air quality will deteriorate, which can lead to asthma attacks and other respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. Dust will increase. Scientists project that warmer temperatures from climate change will increase the frequency of days with unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone, a harmful air pollutant, and a component in smog. This will increase respiratory diseases. 

Thirdly, water availability and quality will reduce increase exposure to water borne diseases. Increases in the frequency or severity of some extreme weather events, such as extreme precipitation, flooding, droughts, and storms,  will impact the health of people during and after the event. The people most at risk include young children, older adults, people with disabilities or medical conditions, and the poor. 

Fourth- diseases like malaria, dengue and other diseases by insects will increase. These vectors can carry infectious pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, from animals to humans. Changes in temperature, precipitation, and extreme events increases the geographic range of diseases spread by vectors and can lead to illnesses occurring earlier in the year.


Fifth - Climate change and the direct impacts of higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere  can  affect food safety and nutrition. Higher air temperatures can increase cases of Salmonella and other bacteria-related food poisoning because bacteria grow more rapidly in warm environments. These diseases can cause gastrointestinal distress and, in severe cases, death. 

We need to take precautionary measures for each of the above. Life insurance and medical insurance is recommended. Insurance premiums may increase.

Learning and Development 

I am a chronic learner. I am always engaged in some or other learning. Could be courses, videos or articles. 

I divide my choices of courses into two parts - For each subject of my interest I divide the courses into  - 
1. To enhance my knowledge 
2. To demonstrate or show case my knowledge 

For the first, I search the internet for free courses, articles, books, videos etc.

For the second, I look for courses which gives me a certificate that could be free or paid. A few of them could be expensive. I keep a yearly budget for these courses. For every paid course that gives me a certificate, I spend at least twice or thrice (minimum duration) the time on unpaid content on the same topic.

But why am I sharing this?

This is very important to create and show difference between you and your competitors in the market (Could be your present company and/ or the company where you are targeting to get into)

For example, if I am into procurement, I am expected to be well versed in supplier selection, negotiation, costing, have awareness of supply chain challenges etc. I may even have a PG Diploma. This will help me bring some uniqueness but may not be enough.

 But if I bring in some uniqueness like having a knowledge on how to apply or use of Artificial Intelligence in procurement, this will create another level of differentiation which will give me the edge.

Now this could be from attending free and paid, with and without certificates. Having a certificate supported by adequate knowledge on the subject will be the clincher. 

Similarly, as a quality engineer is expected to be good in use of statistics, tools etc. A Six Sigma Black belt or similar certificates/qualification will give me the extra edge. However, if I have a good understanding of Smart Manufacturing or Sustainable Manufacturing  or something different than the usual, it will make me unique. 

Don't wait for the  pink slip to start learning new things. 

Create that uniqueness.  Be that resource that will make you difficult/costly to replace but at the same time PREPARE YOURSELF so that you are EVER READY to be replaced.

Identify, Decide, Act

janami dharmam na cha me pravrutthih janamyadharmam na cha me nivrutthih |

Which means, 
I know what is dharma (=righteousness), yet I cannot get myself to follow it! I know what is adharma, yet I cannot retire from it! O Lord of the senses! You dwelt in my heart and I will do as you impel me to do.

These words by Duryodhana sometimes echo with us!

We know what is right and what is wrong, and yet we end up doing the wrong thing because we are under control of our senses and we hold someone else responsible for our actions.

We know that we need to exercise and keep ourselves healthy but end up doing the opposite. 
We know we must be studying but we end up watching that late night movie.
We know that we should be working but end up wasting our time.

This is where our ability to be responsible and decide for ourselves makes the difference. 
Unless we decide to take charge and take action, no amount of coaching, mentoring, counselling etc. is going to be useful. 

The Seeker has to go to the Teacher to seek help.

Bhagwan Krishna reveals the secrets of life only when Arjuna submits himself and asks Bhagwan Krishna to guide him. 

And then follow his advice.

And therefore we need -

1. To know our shortcomings and identify that we need help.
2. To go to the best person who can help and ask for his help.
3. To follow the advice without hesitation.

Water Woes

Summer and monsoon brings a plethora of problems related to water. Water shortage is a known issue but of lower risk. The higher risk is poor water quality which gives rise to waterborne diseases. 

Recently an educational institution reported the outbreak of Hepatitis A.

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by consuming contaminated food and water or by coming in close contact with someone who has the infection. 

Symptoms include:
Fatigue
Clay-colored bowel movements
Jaundice
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal pain, especially near your liver
Loss of appetite
Sudden fever

The infection usually goes away in a few weeks, but it’s possible that it can become severe and last several months.

Prevention and Treatment

💉The best way to prevent hepatitis A is by getting the vaccine.
🍎 Only eat fruit that you can peel and that you have peeled yourself. 
♨️Eat only foods that are thoroughly cooked and served hot, and avoid eating anything at room temperature. 
🍖Don’t eat from food vendors and don’t eat runny eggs or raw/rare meat. 


Once a person has hepatitis A, they build an immunity and will likely never get it again. 

However, the symptoms are serious, often forcing people to take time off work or school to recover. 

If you have contracted hepatitis A, rest, avoid drinking alcohol, and drink plenty of fluids.
