Wally Hart is the Rap Coach and Marketing and Connections Coordinator at Music Resource Center - Cincinnati. Wally has been involved in hip hop music and culture for over 20 years as a DJ, producer, rapper, researcher, writer, promoter, educator, mentor, and rap coach. Wally did his PhD work in Sociology at Texas A&M where he taught Sociology courses for 5 years. His research focuses on systemic racism and the production and consumption of and public discourse about hip hop. Know as WhatUpWally? in the Cincinnati hip hop community, he can be found freestyling, beat boxing, and drumming on stages throughout the city. https://linktr.ee/whatupwally ------------ Dissertation: "White Kid's Don't Love Hip Hop: The White Consumer Myth and the Dialectic of Hip Hop" I deconstruct the white consumer myth and the hip hop decline thesis that dominate hip hop scholarship and popular discourse. I employ the critical theory of the Frankfurt School and systemic racism theory to theorize hip hop as a dialectical movement of resistance to and integration in the white culture industry's commodification system. Teaching Philosophy: Drawing on the critical and innovative traditions of hip hop, critical theory, and the black radical political tradition, I assign creative and reflective projects in which students process and interpret theory through poetry, art, journals, blogs, media analyses, and small group activities alongside traditional essays and quizzes. This enables me to accommodate diverse learning styles and challenge students to develop their sociological imaginations. Teaching Objectives: Develop a critical and historical understanding of: 1. Western social, political, and economic theory and institutions 2. Racialized and gendered systems of domination, oppression, and exploitation 3. The variety of ways in which oppressed and marginalized groups resist oppressive systems and ideologies.
