In 2018 I had a meeting with several executives from a globally recognized company, headquartered in Plano, TX. Our team had successfully earned their exclusive business and we were enjoying a great partnership. In fact, I was in a multi-year run of incredible success with a number of Fortune 100 clients who were putting their trust in us. I really had no complaints. Work was good and life was sweet, except that I knew I could be doing something more. 

I drove out of the parking lot and started to head back to my office, but I wasn’t ready to jump right back into email and the days tasks. So, I put my blinker on and pulled into a parking lot for another growing business in West Plano. As I sat in my car, I thought about how I was made. I was made for building, guiding, and authentically communicating truth that catalyzes meaningful growth, and in all my success I wasn’t doing what I was made to do. 

I looked up at the logo on the side of the building. It read Intuit. I started thinking about what I knew about Intuit. I used Intuit TurboTax and I had heard of Intuit QuickBooks. I wondered what does meaningful growth mean to a company like that? I thought about my dad, who had been a small business owner and leaned on Quicken software to run his business. Something in me clicked. 

There are reasons why some corporations thrive or fail. They may offer the quickest path to a necessity. They may have innovated and created a solution that solved a big problem for a lot of people. They may have a global mission that resonates with the cultural circumstances of the day. And they may forget all of that or be replaced by someone who does it better. Empires rise and fall. People and their need to keep moving forward remain.  

I wanted to do something with most of my waking hours that kept people and their growth at the very forefront, and here I was sitting in a parking lot for a company who I would learn later has a mission to “power prosperity around the world.”

I said a prayer, and I turned on my car and drove back to my office. Seven years later I work in that Plano office at Intuit. We are rapidly growing a Mid-Market Business organization that is focused on empowering businesses to greater operational excellence. Our platform certainly helps deliver those needs, but it’s really the people we are aligning to the businesses. The mantra we have in account management is to be “difference makers.” People who are willing to listen, learn, and help make a difference will never go out of style. This is why I’m doing what I’m doing.
