The Taza Grande was my first proper experience of life - it was a magnificent sail boat; I was part of the crew looking after demanding guests. This was where I first learnt about the importance of teamwork in challenging conditions. After that came a graduate placement in a large packaging organisation. I did the rounds, spending time in marketing, operations, and finally in major accounts and product management. This was great grounding, and finished my time there by completing an MBA and discovered finally that education could be a great thing. Then came the urge for entrepreneurship, so left my long term corporate position to set up a restaurant. What a ride, I found a great team and we opened our first place in central London and quickly won awards from Time-Out and were given nice reviews from some of the national Newspapers. We also got less than good reviews, and that really hurt. Westfield Shopping Centre then asked if we’d like to open at White City in West London, so we went for it, just to make the adventure even more exciting. The business was sold in 2012, and since, I’ve worked with small business, concentrating on the team first to get culture right, then setting strategies for sustained, profitable growth. I am constantly inspired by the ambitions and drive of people working in small, growing businesses and get a huge kick out of helping them to realise their plans. I also combine this with plenty of physical activity helping me to keep body and soul fit and well.
