I have used SQL, R, DAX, Python and Power BI to create and maintain data pipelines and visual dashboards for internal and external stakeholders.

I worked to provide data analysis to teams across the business as well as within our own Regulatory department. 

I combined my knowledge of regulatory policy and data analytics to produce bespoke insights for dozens of teams. In this role, I oversee projects across all of the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process using a range of software and programming skills including SQL, R, Python and Power BI.

My role was at the heart of MoJ's latest policy priority - comprehensive prison reform.

Prison Reform Policy

This role presented a variety of challenges in the active area of criminal justice reform, specifically delivering the public policy objective to reduce re-offending.

My first months in this role saw me concentrate on offender health policy, specifically older offenders, learning disabilities and autism. I quickly learnt about these complex issues and their particular application in a criminal justice context. I provided Ministerial briefing ahead of an inquiry by the House of Commons Justice Select Committee into older offenders in late 2014.

After this, my work diversified across a wide range of areas relating to criminal justice reform, including on young offenders and the Government's response to the Harris Review on Self-Inflicted Deaths in Custody of 18-24 year olds.

Civil Servant in Reducing Re-offending and Criminal Justice Policy

My role in the Criminal and Civil Legal Policy Unit at the Ministry of Justice saw me leading on a number of important dossiers.

Primarily, my work was focussed on the new EU proposals on strengthening and harmonising the rights of accused or suspected persons across the EU. In this capacity, I led the UK's policy response on the proposal on Child Defendants and the proposal on Vulnerable Adults. I also gave input on the EU proposals on Legal Aid and the Presumption of Innocence. In this capacity, I attended the Council of the EU working group on substantive criminal law (DROIPEN) in Brussels, representing the UK.

Using my existing experience of the workings of the EU as well as project managing previous UK policy positions on EU proposals, I effectively managed HMG's response to this interesting set  of instruments from the European Commission.

I also led on a number of other, smaller dossiers, such as the MoJ's position on the Directive to protect the financial interests of the European Union and the UK's position on the Directive on Access to a Lawyer.

In the latter months of my work, I laid the groundwork for the implementation into UK law of EU legislation relating to mutual recognition of supervision orders across the Union.

My role saw me engage heavily with relevant stakeholders, both within and outside of Whitehall. I also briefed Ministers, coordinated the Government's scrutiny commitments to Parliament and prepared speeches and interventions.

My work in the International Directorate at MoJ was split into two parts and retained a focus on EU policy.

The first part of my role saw me working on EU strategy, which involves the development and implementation of long-term ideas around EU JHA and how the Department faces this policy area. A particular focus arose on planning and developing the UK's position to the replacement of the Stockholm Programme - the EU's strategic plan for JHA.

The second part of my role concerned the upcoming decision that the UK government must take as regards pre-Lisbon JHA measures: the so-called "JHA opt-out". This was an exceedingly interesting and challenging area of policy that requires both strategic thinking and precise attention to detail. It involved extensive Ministerial and Parliamentary engagement, in both of which I played a part.

Working in the Cabinet (Private Office) of Commission Vice President and Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding. This was a bilingual posting, featuring work in both English and French.

I was working on a variety of current portfolios, with a particular focus on the EU's data protection proposals. In this role, I aided the Cabinet and Vice-President in a wide variety of ways, including by producing briefing, drafting speeches, conducting policy analyses and engaging with stakeholders. The highlight of my work here was a speech drafted for the Vice-President presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

UK Ministry of Justice

My work in this team focussed on EU and International Data Protection Policy. This allowed me to work directly alongside data protection experts, stakeholders and other public officials in the UK and EU to shape the future of European and therefore domestic data protection legislation. The work also allowed me to study the UK Data Protection Act from both a legal and policy perspective. 

This aspect of my work was particularly interesting and relevant since the European Commission published two proposed instruments for EU data protection policy in January 2012. Since then, I worked on all aspects related to the UK's response to these proposals, including lengthy analyses of the documents and engagement with interested public and private bodies. I also led a negotiating team representing the United Kingdom in negotiations in the Council of the European Union.

Additionally, I spend some of my time working on information policy in general, including projects associated with the Freedom of Information Act.

In this role, I worked on European Strategy within the MoJ's International Directorate. As part of this work, I helped to coordinate all the European work that is done within the Department, which covers a wide range of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) policies. 

This work allowed me to increase my knowledge in these increasingly important areas of public policy whilst simultaneously allowing me to learn how to coordinate and prioritise large and important workflows. I also worked with other government departments, particularly the Foreign Office and Home Office, on coordinating a unified government position on JHA issues.

Managing shifts and staff for the day. 

In this role, I managed the shop from the start of the working day to its conclusion, taking complete responsibility for its running that day. This involved preparing the shop before trading, managing staff, handling large quantities of money and dealing with customer complaints or queries.

I am an experienced professional, having worked in the fields of public policy and data science.

I currently work as a data scientist for a marketing and sales firm, helping them use data to drive their campaigns and to deliver better outcomes for clients. In this role, I am leading the project for constructing the new data lakehouse to modernise our approach to data.

I previously worked in data analysis and regulatory reporting for a major utilities firm, offering insights into the capacity of the organisation and advising them on policies to meet their legal and regulatory duties.

Before this, I worked for over seven years at the Ministry of Justice in the UK as a civil servant. I have also worked for five months in the European Commission, alongside the then Justice Commissioner and Commission Vice-President, Viviane Reding. I worked in both English and French.

My specialities include: policy development and analysis, statistics, data science and programming (R, Python and SQL) and business insights (Power BI). I am able to add value to a wide variety of organisations, in both the public and private sectors.

Outside of work, I enjoy PC gaming, reading, politics, economics, and have an amateur historical interest in Tudor and World War 2 history. I also build and maintain high-spec PCs for myself and others.
