The Soprano Group

The Soprano Group is a group of technology and marketing pros who apply both skill sets (IT and marketing) to help our customers drive traffic and maximize their web 2.0 presence.

As a product of The Soprano Group, I created www.Query.City in an effort to bring together the Triangle and provide a vehicle for companies in the area increase their SEO value.

We've also created a software engine that we're excited about because of it's ability to assist and improve multiple markets.  We call the engine Tetra and the products can be found here:

A new and under construction project is in the data visualizations area.  We're working hard to bring something special to the web while maintaining basic and accepted user functions.

It only took 2 years. We all knew it would come to this. And we’re here.

Ai has gone from “it could change the world” to..

Let’s do cheaper, easier, less work.

There are some folks doing excellent work in Ai. 

And then there are folks adopting Ai grading?! 😂

Just a year ago you didn’t want students using Ai. Now this? 

Don’t get me wrong, teachers are underpaid. And overworked. But the system, like many others in America, is what’s broken.

Tossing Ai at GRADING is laughable. Do NOT allow a robot to determine pass / fail.

Don’t allow robots to tutor people, train new hires, or anything of the like.

There’s a reason that Ai requires heavy context to work even as an assistant, much less in charge and automated.

C’mon Texas.

Will Soprano

I’m really grateful for the new “catch-up” tab on LinkedIn..

It’s helping me remove connections that aren’t active. 

When I first got on LinkedIn years ago I added any and every one. And I still struggle to not do that today.

But who I’m connected with matters, and I want to be connected with folks that are currently active.

I want to share with people that share back, people that log in to read.

I’m uninterested in a bigger circle, regardless of connection / follower count on LinkedIn.

Links! Are they important? Google made changes. Here’s what you need to know:

Googles latest update included signals that folks have run with - for better or worse. 

So, before reading any more please remember that a measured response is always the best response. 

Now, as for the links… yeah, it seems google is changing its reliance on backlinks (maybe).. though we’ve yet to see firm examples / results of backlinks mattering. 

Some are showing big + mature domains as examples to follow, and I’d suggest to use that with caution. Small / fresh domains do not get to do everything that the bigger / older sites do. Sorry, it’s the truth.

But, before you change your backlink strategy - in any way - be sure that you’re 100% covered on the basics of SEO.

Just because they created a category or concept, does not make them the authority on the subject.

This weekend I saw the movie Freud's Last Session - and it occurred to me that being the first does not mean someone was the smartest. 

No, in fact it just means they were the first - which is valuable in its own right.

But how we frame those who came first is important in our conversations today. I'd offer that it's more difficult to take a category or concept deeper and more efficient than it is to create it.

One is necessary for the other to have opportunity.

There's no playbook that's special. Nothing that is forever the singular truth to use in your web, SEO, product and software development - results be damned.

Maybe we can stop revering folks for being first, and begin an appreciation for our fellows of today.

Like right now.

Whatever you hate is what you're capable of. Yes, even you. Whether you're a company or person or group - the things you have so much vigor and venom for is what you are so very capable of doing, or becoming.

The internet was supposed to liberate us, the web democratize information. 

But to do that we must think rhetorically about how we produce content of any sort, or implement Ai. 

At the heart of technology is human communication. We’re trying to help humans find, share, and educate themselves. 

That’s why our best practices in SEO are all about the user - and why Google so fervently demands more of businesses.

SEO isn’t a hack, it’s optimizing content for a specific group of people to find, use, and share.

Ai isn’t a hack to infinite information or effortless work but an assistant in your own work. To help you communicate using your very own knowledge and expertise. 

So in order to do SEO well, or use Ai responsibly, YOU have to have the skills and domain expertise.

The first word in IT is information. Never forget.
