Here's what you do (and don't do)

1. Validate through empathy. 

Show you care and understand the problem. Reassure them that they aren't crazy for the feeling like a High Earner, Not Rich Yet (HENRY)

Don't say something like "just move" or "well, actually, $100,000 is a lot of money where I live." I've seen advisors do this a lot. 


2. Offer a quick solution.

Now that you have their attention, pick one of their pain points and offer a solution. 

Offer a free cash flow audit to free up the budget. Just because you FEEL broke doesn't mean you ARE broke. 

Don't pick on coffee. This point is done to death on both sides. Use another example of 3+ streaming services costing $100 a month or something similar. 


3. Show real-world examples. 

"I saved my client $400 a month on childcare by doing XYZ." I see a lot of posts like these. Great. Keep doing them. 

The problem is that they skip steps 1 and 2 and come off as arrogant, or they're posting to boost their ego. 

It's about them, not you. 


4. Repurpose the process in multiple media formats.

If you feel awkward or afraid on camera, I hope my story gives you the courage to try again. 


When I was in kindergarten, I didn't talk. I was a selective mute. 

We'd do this thing where we take turns announcing the weather to the class, and when it was my turn, I wouldn't say anything out loud. 

I had to whisper into my friend Kevin, Anthony, or John's ear, and they would say it for me. 

I was afraid to talk. 

So I get it. It's uncomfortable talking on camera by yourself. 
You don't know what to say. You freeze.
It's intimidating, putting your opinion into the world, not knowing if you make sense. 


There is a cure though. 

See, I didn't talk in kindergarten, but I still had friends. I was quite popular, actually. 

I remember the first time I had a friend over from my class. As soon as Drew walked through the door, I talked like normal. I played like normal. 

I was normal. 

There was no reason to be afraid becuase I was in a comfortable environment with someone I trusted. 


That's the energy and environment I create for financial advisors who "don't look good on video".

My favorite part of hosting a podcast is the thrill of a great recording. 


I've had a rough last couple of weeks. 

I'm losing my job and main source of income

I'm trying to figure out how to take WillyT Productions full time 

I'm trying to figure out a sales process that works beyond a lucky DM.

I'm trying to adjust to the closing of a chapter of my life I really enjoyed while trying to get excited for what's coming next.

Then today happened. I got behind the mic and did what I do best and the thrill was game changing. 

It was fun. The conversation flowed. and I know I'm going to pull great content for my client.

I need more of this.

For a moment there was no stress. Just the thrill of doing what I love and what I'm good at.

Financial advisors with more than 60% of engagements coming from other advisors live in a LinkedIn Bubble. 

Here's how to pop it:

1. Engage with other advisors no more than 25% of the time.

2. Engage with your ideal clients more. 

Are you a CPA for small business owners? 
They are on LinkedIn. 

Do you help young people manage student debt? 
They complain on LinkedIn

Are you a wealth coach working with $200k a year or more earners? 
Yup, they're here too. 

At least 60% of your comments should be with your ideal customer


3. DM your demo when they comment, like, or view your profile. 

This part sucks. But it's 110% necessary. 
You don't need to sell, but you do need to start a conversation. 

Your content will FAIL if you do not do outreach. 

You prick the bubble by creating content for the people you work with / want to work with.

Your fear of being on camera is holding you back from opportunities. 

Listen, I get it. Being on camera by yourself is not a fun experience for most. 
Know you're not alone, and that feeling is completely natural.

Try a dialogue instead of a monologue.

My job is to make you comfortable on camera. The solution is easier than you think. 


We have pre-production meetings to go over the conversation. 
It's that easy. 


Andrew Rose, CFP® CLU®, RICP® describes it like football practice. 

I draw up the plays. (the questions)
We go over the game plan. (why the audience cares)
We make adjustments as necessary. (will compliance get mad?)


We did this for the first 3 recordings. It helped him get comfortable and ready to record. 

It helps me too. I needed to get to know him as much as he needed to get to know me. 


And it worked. 


Now I just send him the list of questions, and he edits as needed. 


He has no reason to feel insecure about being on camera because we established the chemistry and the formula early on. 


Now he's with someone he knows. Someone he trusts to make him look good.


Video doesn't need to be complicated. 


It helps when you have a host who knows what he's doing and can coach the game.

I asked one of my clients and here's what he said. 

-  The importance of getting your name out there
-  A chance to share his expertise and uniqueness 
-  A way to stay relevant to prospects and clients

Video shouldn't replace what you're doing. If done right, it enhances the systems you already have in place. 

It works for Andrew. It can work for you too.

"I need help getting 'unstuck.' I think video can help." That's what an advisor said to me in a discovery call last week. 

Does this sound familiar?

- You have a strong roster of clients

This is the result of a clear and consistent production workflow. 

What you see is Andrew having a conversation with his audience on PMI. 

His cadence and energy are similar to how he speaks in real life. 

What you don't see is who he's actually talking to. 
That would be me. 

Andrew and I had a conversation on PMI. My job is talk with him, expand on his ideas, and challenge him if necessary. 

Then the magic of editing takes over. I pulled the best part from his answers, sent it to my editor, and he does his thing.

PMI - people freak out over it.

Primary Mortgage Insurance - usually added by a lender to "insure" against default risks, etc.  

How do you avoid PMI?  Put 20% or more down as a down payment.

But should you?

With home values being as high as they are, it's harder especially for first-time homebuyers to put $40k-80k down.  And even if you have it, should you?

PMI is not forever, on most conventional loans (though many more like FHA, etc. may).  And it may only cost you $50-150/month.
