I became a Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIEAust) after seven years of hard work, then decided to channel my problem-solving mindset, process-driven approach, and love of quality craftsmanship into a different passion - coffee. My specialty coffee journey began while living and working around Adelaide Central Markets. What started as a side passion became my full-time career in 2017, when I started out in the coffee industry. In 2023, with the birth of our daughter, my wife and I became more conscious of our caffeine intake. I noticed a gap in the market for exceptional low-caf and decaf coffees - products that delivered on the specialty coffee experience with more choice around caffeine level. That insight became Calm Coffee Roastery: a specialty coffee brand built on science, quality, and clarity for caffeine-conscious consumers. I am developing expertise in: Sourcing unique coffee varieties from origin. Roasting with precision using both sensory skills and data. Branding & marketing to reach niche audiences. E-commerce and direct-to-consumer growth strategies. I’ve completed SCA Professional Roasting Certification (June 2022) with Morten Münchow (CoffeeMind), applying his scientific approach to achieve consistency and flavour excellence. Shortly after I became an Authorised SCA Trainer (AST) which helped to solidify my learnings and position myself to help other passionate coffee roasters. Alongside running Calm Coffee Roastery, I consult for coffee businesses on sourcing, roasting, product positioning, and operations - blending my engineering precision with industry knowledge to help coffee brands achieve roasting excellence. Before coffee, I worked as a structural engineer in Australia and the UK, delivering complex building projects, mentoring engineers, and refining processes for accuracy and efficiency. My engineering background gives me a unique edge: the ability to diagnose problems, optimise workflows, and ensure measurable results - skills I now apply to the coffee industry and beyond.
