After 7 years working as a structural engineer, I decided to pursue another passion, leaving structural design to work in the coffee industry. About coffee: My interest in specialty coffee started when I was living and working around The Adelaide Central Markets after university. It was a passion on the side until 2017 when I decided to make the transition to working in the coffee industry. I have learnt the fundamentals of coffee roasting through my role at Monmouth but also through my own coffee education by attending SCA courses as well as through other self-learning. I completed my SCA professional roasting certification in June 2022 working with Morten Munchow of CoffeeMind. His practical and science led approach to explaining the roasting process has given me the tools as a roaster to understand and control coffee quality and taste, and ensure consistency. Using this science first approach brings clarity and efficiency to the role of the coffee roaster About my engineering career: I became a chartered structural engineer (CPEng MIEAust) in 2017 with Engineers Australia after 7 years experience working in building structures. I achieved my engineering degree in Adelaide with first class honours and worked for 4 years in Adelaide at a mid size consultancy before moving to the UK in 2014. My approach to tutoring is to focus on getting the concepts and approach correct, and to share my work experiences with my students. Engineering requires a solid foundation in both Maths and Physics, but also an ability to simplify complex problems into solvable models and it is this that I believe is most important for young engineers to understand. What I enjoyed most about being a design engineer was working with and training young engineers. After I left the industry I have maintained involvement through private tutoring of university students. In 2020 I established good foundations engineering tuition which provides 1:1 online tuition to engineering students who want additional support to their university learning.
