A TREE STORY As a young boy with a partner-in-crime, my little brother and I roamed our lower-class disadvantaged suburban block tirelessly looking for adventures. We threw stuff. We threw rocks, fruit, dirt, anything that could sharpen our targeting skills. We ran everywhere our lungs could take us. We pushed the limit. We especially climbed everything. And there was this one particular mighty oak (in truth, it was a grapefruit tree) that reached at least 30 feet to the sky. We vowed we would summit and get our eyeballs above that tree. We spent months playing and failing in that tree. We experimented with weathered scrap wood and rusty nails and sketchy rope. We ziplined with a coat hanger. We also plummeted to the hard pavement with that coat hanger. We built tree fortresses with tomato cages and threw stuff at each other. We found joy in creativity, innovation, and hard work. We learned camaraderie. And suddenly, one day, there we were with our eyeballs peering above the tippy-top leaf of that tree, staring across the edges of our block. It was a moment of pure elation. It’s one of my fondest memories of joy. Here’s what I learned: We developed and hardened our bodies. We sharpened our minds. We earned resilience. We ascended and reached the summit. We. Together. Then we looked for the next tree. I find great joy in developing people and preparing the environment so that together we can reach great heights. I’ve learned to apply this frame to the rest of my life - past, present and future. I found my purpose in grinding with others toward a common goal. From my marriage to serving as a proud dad of a daughter, from building exquisite teams to developing generations of some of our best Americans, and leading organizations even in adverse environments and always with limited resources. ______________ I'm a results-driven veteran with 23 years of experience thriving in high-stress, resource-constrained environments.
