Founding co-director for a private-public partnership (P3) in Phoenix, Arizona known as the WearTech Applied Research Center. The WearTech ARC was established via a collaboration between the Arizona Partnership for Economic Innovation (PEI) with ASU Fulton Schools of Engineering. 

My role was to help companies, engineers, WearTech/MedTech entrepreneurs, faculty, and students accelerate the commercialization of wearable technologies developed, tested, or manufactured in our region. In the 18 month start-up phase of my efforts, we structured and sponsored several industry-led research projects. We were successful in earning Federal Support through an Entrepreneurship & Innovation Grant from the US Dept of Commerce. We were also successful in gaining Arizona State Budget appropriations (HB 2747 FY20) for further developing Wearable Technologies in Applied Research Centers.

After completing the 18 month startup milestones successfully, I resigned in June 2019 to focus on IST growth.

Developed the scientific vision and foundation for the company. Served as BOD Member 08/11 – 3/16. Responsible for overseeing scientific activities related to internal and subcontracted R&D, product/pipeline development, prosecuting and managing intellectual property portfolio, regulatory compliance, external communications, and strategic planning. Managed scientific support for all stages of the company’s product lifecycle from product conceptualization and prototyping to industrial design and usability testing, manufacturing, launch and distribution. This required cross-department coordination of employees spanning software, hardware/engineering, research, marketing, operations, and customer support teams.

Established and led a neuro-engineering research team and laboratory to develop and optimize neuromodulation methods and systems. My research group worked specifically on optimizing cognitive and sensory experiences in humans using pulsed ultrasound. In addition to ultrasonic neuromodulation, my laboratory worked on interrogating and characterizing human brain circuits and behaviors using transcranial magnetic stimulation, as well as other electrical stimulation methods combined with advanced computational modeling approaches.

Organized, formed, and managed all company relations.

Founder

Established and operated a federally-funded neuroscience laboratory to develop and investigate noninvasive brain stimulation and neuromodulation methods and systems. Our team made the first observations that pulsed ultrasound could directly stimulate brain circuit activity. We subsequently engineered and described novel approaches to noninvasive focal brain stimulation and neuromodulation using pulsed ultrasound.

As a professor of biomedical engineering and neuroengineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), I teach and conduct research on the development and application of noninvasive bioelectronic and ultrasonic neuromodulation devices. 

I am an entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in neuroscience and neurotechnology development as a founder, co-founder, and executive. My company IST, LLC, is commercializing vagus nerve stimulation and focused ultrasound neuromodulation to improve health and performance.
