Not all innovation needs big budgets, boardrooms, or brainstorming it’s about solving the problems worth solving

Some of the biggest AI news isn’t coming from Silicon Valley or Beijing 👀

Countries around the world are stepping up their game and getting more proactive about prepping their citizens to thrive in an AI-powered world. And I want to recap several that I found so you can stay on top of it.

🇨🇦 This week, Justin Trudeau announced a 2.4B ($1.77B USD) investment package directly into building AI compute.

🇸🇬 In February, Singapore began offering AI education to its citizens and announced three new programs, one being a reskilling initiative for Singaporeans (ages 40+) allowing them to be funded $4,000 to take training courses for better employability.

⏬️ AND EVEN MORE ⏬

🇯🇵 Japan launched "Atashi" - an adaptive learning platform that creates personalized AI curriculums for every student

🇮🇹 Italy set aside €30MM to upskill workers in AI

🇺🇸 The US is injecting AI into K-12 via personalized learning, virtual tutors, and making every kid kinda feel like they're in the Matrix

Countries like 🇰🇷 South Korea ($10B) and 🇫🇷 France ($5.5B) are also investing funds directly into AI education and research

They’re all preparing their citizens to adapt, innovate, and THRIVE as AI keeps evolving. Instead of running, we should all be doubling down on upskilling people and setting an actionable example.

Plastic eating Jellyfish Robot is here to clean our water 🪼 

With an 80-liter capacity, this Robo-Jellyfish can capture large debris as well as tiny bits of plastic. 

Equipped with sensors, it not only collects waste but also monitors water (temperature, salinity, turbidity, cyanobacteria and phytoplankton concentrations), and perform bathymetric surveys up to 20 meters deep.

Innovation without purpose is like playing in a sandbox: entertaining yet futile. Watching adults immersed in operating miniature construction equipment, complete with the buzz of activity and the illusion of productivity, mirrors a common spectacle in the business world today. This scenario epitomizes how companies, in the pursuit of Industry 4.0 and digital transformation, often find themselves merely 'playing with technology' — AI, digital twins, IoT, etc. — without driving significant change.

While these technologies have the potential to revolutionize industries, their adoption can sometimes be more about the novelty than the impact, yielding minimal, if any, real-world progress. The miniature construction site, buzzing with activity yet lacking in scale and consequence, serves as a metaphor for this phenomenon: it’s engaging, it’s innovative, it looks impressive, but ultimately, the ground moved is inconsequential.

Experimentation and pilot projects are crucial for understanding and leveraging new technologies, but they should not be the end goal. They are just the beginning, the initial step in a journey towards substantial transformation. Let's not get permanently distracted by the allure of the toys in our sandbox. Instead, we should focus on scaling these innovations to make a meaningful impact. The real challenge lies not in playing with the technology but in harnessing it to build something that truly matters — something that goes beyond the sandbox.

❗Control cabinet cabling with cobots❗

Please taka a look at this great robotic application, which Fraunhofer IPA implemented together with the company Rittal GmbH & Co. KG. The software pitasc, developed at Fraunhofer IPA, is used for force-controlled assembly processes. 

Two Universal Robots arms carry out the task together. The modular pitasc system enables the robot arms to move and rotate in parallel. They work hand in hand, with one robot holding the cable and the second bringing it to the starting position for the cabling. The robots can find, tighten, hold ready, lay, plug in, fix, move freely or immerse cables. They can also perform push-ins and pull tests. Push-in poses and waypoints within the cabinets are parameters to the robot program and directly read from the digital wiring plan.
