5 Years Down the Drain: Learn from My Career Mistakes!


If only I had known this formula when I started working in the industry 15 years ago, I believe I could have achieved my goals five years earlier.

Many newcomers to the job market don't know how to progress their careers in a systematic and strategic manner. Although external factors play a significant role, but self-evaluation and planning is one's own responsibilty. 

For here is a formula: As a new entrant in the fields of marketing, advertising, and sales you should divide your career into 4 steps:

1. Agency Experience
2. Corporate Experience
3. Non-Corporate Experience or Startup
4. Self-Employment 

The sequence here matters. I spent too much time at the first level—almost 8 years. Despite transitioning from another country and starting anew, I lingered 2 years too long at this stage. Thus, you should aim to spend no more than three years in an agency environment before seeking a corporate position.

Remember, it’s not about the money initially. It’s about establishing a solid foundation in the industry and gaining experience and expertise.

Assuming you secure a corporate job, don't stay for more than four years; instead, divide this time between two different corporate organizations. It's crucial to define your industry with these jobs. If you fail to demonstrate that you are an industry expert, it will significantly hinder your career progression.

Now it's your time to shine and be a leader. Join a non-corporate entity or startup, and aim for a senior title. Commit to this company for at least three years. However, ensure the company is willing to elevate your profile. Merely holding a senior title is futile if you're not given opportunities to showcase your expertise and leadership. this move is vital because you can directly associate company's success with your efforts.

The final stage is to launch your own business, big or small. Nothing compares to the freedom and thrill of doing your own thing. If circumstances don't permit, reenter the corporate world with a superior title and a substantial salary. And you would be suprised to see that you are at the same level as your old corporate boss. 

Disclaimer: Career growth involves many variables. If you feel your growth is on track, follow it. However, most would agree that waiting passively for promotions can be disheartening and demotivating. Therefore, carve your own path.

It's a shame we don't teach this to our buisness students.

However, I must argue that people are adaptable and can change their behavior based on the circumstances. Nevertheless, at their core, they remain at peace with their innate traits. Manoeuvring agaisnt your personality might be easy for few people and may be very difficult for others. 

Considering that personality can influence your career progression, it's wise to assess yourself and devise strategies to address your weaknesses in alignment with the prevailing corporate culture. For instance, if you're an introvert, you might enhance your interactions by pushing yourself to meet new people. Conversely, if you're an extrovert, you could focus on developing your problem-solving skills independently, reducing your reliance on others.

Here is a fun fact, most billionaires business owners are introverts, but most CEOs running their businesses are extroverts. This tells us something, doesn't it?

Throughout my career, I've encountered numerous companies with minimal budgets for marketing. Despite their financial constraints, they recognized the importance of marketing and sought strategies that required minimal to no budget.

So, what exactly is a Zero Budget Marketing Strategy?

Zero budget marketing doesn't literally mean spending zero dollars. Rather, it focuses on minimizing direct costs and utilizing free resources to maximize marketing efforts. This approach relies heavily on the strategic use of time, creativity, and existing networks rather than financial expenditure.

I have developed a diagram that illustrates the various components that can be utilized in Zero Budget Marketing.

Challenges and Considerations:

While zero budget marketing is attractive for its cost-efficiency, it is not without its challenges. It requires significant time investment, creativity, and a deep understanding of digital marketing dynamics. Moreover, measuring the impact of such strategies can be complex and requires a keen eye on analytics to understand what works and what doesn’t.

Why salespeople are not a good fit to lead the organization as CEOs. 


While it might sound controversial, those familiar with behavioral sciences might understand why salespeople often are not ideal candidates to lead an organization. This perspective arises from the observation that sales-focused careers do not typically develop the broad range of skills required for effective leadership. However, it is important to acknowledge that a leader's ability to drive the organization forward inevitably involves an understanding of sales.

In my career, I have worked under two CEOs and one CBDO with backgrounds in sales, and frankly, these were some of the least effective leadership scenarios I've encountered. These leaders often struggled to unify various departments or strategically guide the organization. In one instance, the CBDO had such significant influence over the CEO that the entire organization was essentially at the mercy of his decisions.

I am not arguing against the importance of sales; rather, I propose that salespeople should not occupy the highest decision-making roles or leadership positions within an organization. Historically, sales was considered the external arm of a business, especially in B2C markets, and this arrangement worked well for many companies. However, the management paradigm shifted toward including salespeople in leadership as B2B businesses grew, which has unfortunately blurred essential distinctions.

Based on my experiences and behavioral studies, I am putting this aurgument due to following factors: 
 
Specialized Skill Set: While sales managers are adept at negotiation and customer relations, they often lack broader leadership skills such as strategic planning and financial management.

Narrow Focus: Focused primarily on revenue generation, sales managers may overlook other crucial areas like product development and human resources.

Leadership Style: Sales leadership typically promotes aggressive, short-term objectives, which may clash with the more balanced and collaborative style needed for organizational leadership.

Risk Tolerance: Sales roles usually encourage a high risk tolerance aimed at immediate outcomes, which contrasts with the cautious, long-term risk management needed at the top of an organization.

Change Management: Sales managers often have limited experience with comprehensive organizational changes, such as technology upgrades or culture shifts.

Interdepartmental Coordination: Accustomed to prioritizing sales, these leader might struggle with the diplomatic balance required to manage the diverse needs of various departments.

As a digital marketing professional does your formal education matter?

The short answer is no, but it does come with significant caveats.

Without a formal degree, approximately 90% of corporate entities will likely disregard your application during the initial screening process. This limits job opportunities significantly. To counter this, one would need to dedicate considerable effort to enhancing their social media profiles and positioning themselves as an industry expert.

However, many digital agencies have a different approach. They often do not require formal education because their focus is on specialized services to meet client needs. In these settings, having specific skills is more critical than holding a degree.

The preference for formal education in many corporate environments stems from their generalist approach rather than specialization. While they might employ a digital marketing manager, this individual will usually work in conjunction with an agency. Corporations value general management skills highly because they want employees who can multitask and adapt across various business aspects that interact with their department(s).

For instance, in a digital agency, a digital marketing professional’s primary role is to execute client campaigns and manage budgets. Conversely, a digital marketing manager within a corporate setting needs to collaborate with multiple departments - like finance, data protection, compliance, legal, sales, and operations - before even receiving a campaign budget.

This broad, interdisciplinary approach is why corporations often favor candidates with a comprehensive educational background that are exposed to multiple subjects in their eduction years. 

In the end, I must say that employment trends are rapidly evolving, and organizations are increasingly recognizing the need for specialists to navigate the constantly changing digital landscape. Nonetheless, my advice would be to secure at least a bachelor's degree to safeguard your future opportunities.
