Robots assemble Raspberry Pi 🍓

The two-armed robots are helping to build a popular microprocessor.

Robots insert Ethernet ports and USB ports, making the electronics assembly line very efficient. Collaborative robots from ABB Robotics place components on boards from trays.

It's always entertaining to see the YuMi robot in action. It's the first quasi-humanoid (two-armed torso) robot I learned about back in 2019!

Robots moving railcars! 🚃

Did you know that KUKA is also in the autonomous mobile robots business?

Yes, you heard that right. 

And not just any robots. Robots that carry up to 56 tons! 🏋🏼

The railcar production process is highly complex, particularly when moving massive cars sideways within a plant. 

This challenge has been addressed at the Siemens facility in Germany using the OmniMove system from KUKA. 

The system allows for precise positioning, enabling the units to lift, move, and lower railcars with remarkable accuracy. With Mecanum wheels, the OmniMove units can move seamlessly in any direction, making the process incredibly efficient. Together, these units are capable of lifting up to 56 tons, streamlining heavy railcar production.

What a great use case for mobile robots! 😮‍💨

Helper of the chef! 🍞

Romias Robotics developed a robotic system that helps out in the bakery.

The new robot system at Bakkerij Nollen B.V. helps the bakers by taking over heavy and repetitive tasks, making their jobs easier and more efficient.

The two FANUC Europe M-710 robots work together to empty, clean, and prepare trolleys with bread pans, and then place baked loaves on the conveyor belt, streamlining the bread-making process.

One robot takes bread pans out of trolleys and hands them to the other robot using special grippers, demonstrating a high level of collaboration and precision.

The robots are custom-equipped with food-grade equipment, ensuring a safe and sanitary bread-making process.

KUKA robots automate the detection of flatness of vehicle body gaps in the automotive industry. 

They ensure precision manufacturing standards by inspecting and ensuring even gaps in vehicle bodies. To automate the inspection of vehicle components, KUKA robots serve as advanced tools. 

Using sensors and sophisticated programming, they detect irregularities or deviations in the flatness of gaps between different body parts. 

I love watching robot applications, especially on a moving conveyor! Pure engineering! 🧡

Progress over time! ⌛️

Robotics is not just a piece of software. It's an iterative process of building a physical machine. It's hardware.

Looking back can sometimes help you see how far you've come. 

It can be difficult to see progress without a perspective, and time offers a great perspective! 

The 13-year adventure of Boston Dynamics is an excellent example. 

It's a robot adventure. 

Looking back, you can assess your progress, see ups and downs, and learn from your mistakes.

After all is said and done, you should feel proud.

Congrats Marc on the journey!

Robots in the space! 🪐

It's a natural direction for robots — unmanned, hard-to-access places like space.

A Japanese startup working on space robots has received $15 million more money (back in August 2023) to continue developing lunar technology. 

The lunar robotic rover "R1" from GITAI has been designed to perform various general-purpose tasks on the moon, such as exploration, mining, and inspection.

There are plans to build a rover for the moon and they will also be building a special robotic arm for space jobs such as installing things on the moon. 

They even have plans to test this arm on the International Space Station! 🛰️

No more washing dishes! 🧽

The Universal Manipulation Interface (UMI) introduces a new way for robots to learn tasks directly from human demonstrations in real-world settings, without needing expensive specialized equipment. 

The hardware design involves cobots from Universal Robots, and a hand-held gripper with a built-in GoPro camera to capture detailed visual information necessary for learning complex tasks. 🤳🏼

This setup allows for portable and cost-effective data collection, enabling robots to learn diverse manipulation skills such as dynamic tossing, cup arrangement, bimanual cloth folding, and dishwashing. 🧼

With UMI, robots can generalize these learned behaviors to new environments and objects.

Thanks to its portability and intuitive design, UMI allows for fast data collection at a rate of 30 seconds/demonstration.

By the way that could be a great ad campaign for Kraft Heinz ketchup! 🍅

Robots building homes! 🛖

Automated modular house construction getting a helping hand from robots.

Their approach aims to shift construction from traditional sites to factory settings, where robots assist workers in building houses using materials like wood or steel. 

This method promises to reduce construction time and costs, optimize logistics, and maintain high-quality standards while being more resource-efficient and weather-independent. ⏱️

Modular construction allows customization to meet customer preferences and varying building regulations, dispelling the notion that factory-built homes are impersonal or identical.

KUKA robots are helping out another industry! 🦺

The robots are going to steal all our jobs. 🥷🏼

On average, I encounter this attitude a couple of times per week.

You might have heard that robots are going to snatch all of our jobs, leaving us stranded and struggling to live.

Hold on a second! 👀

There is no doubt robots are getting smarter and can do some tasks faster than us, but that doesn't mean they can do everything. 

Period.

Think about everything that makes us human: the ability to feel, understand each other, dream big, and create beautiful things. That's what robots can't do.

Sure, they might take over some jobs that are boring or repetitive, but that doesn't mean there won't be any work left for us.

Did I mention the fertility rate?

Fertility rates in Europe and the United States are declining, with the European Union averaging about 1.5 children per woman and the United States around 1.7 children per woman, both below the replacement level of 2.2 children per woman. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Who is going to replace the current generation that is going to retire soonish?

Also, it is worth mentioning that companies that create robots also create new professions and jobs related to robot operation e.g. Area Mapper (scanning the area for the robots) - Starship Technologies, Robot Driver (tele-operating the robots - Energy Robotics, and many more!

The jobs market in robotics will be steadily growing! 📈

So, don't worry too much about robots stealing all our jobs – we humans have plenty of tricks up our sleeves to stay valuable in this ever-changing world!

'Bring my coffee, robot'! 🪑

Imagine a coffee table that doesn't just sit there, but walks to you on 12 precisely engineered legs. 

This is the Carpentopod created by Giliam de Carpentier, a fusion of cutting-edge technology and old-world craftsmanship. 

The leg linkage design was created through an evolutionary algorithm optimized for walking speed, clearance, and material use. The components were designed using Autodesk Fusion 360 and manufactured using a 3-axis CNC router. 

The table has a hollow central "belly" that houses the electronics, motors, and battery. 🔋

Two cheap geared 24V brushless motors, typically used for automated curtains, power the table's movement.

Autononous cars? That was yesterday. Today? Autonomous coffee tables! :)

For the farmers! 🌾

Robots help with grain bins!

Did you know that the interior of the silo is an Ex zone? ☢️

Grain Weevil helps farmers manage grain bins, a hazardous job. It levels the grain, breaks up crusts and bridges, removes grain from the walls, and pushes it into an extraction auger.

In addition to measuring 20 by 20 inches and weighing 50 pounds. Using two motorized augers to redistribute the grain, the robot can work for 90 minutes to two hours on a 20-minute charge. Robots operate at a similar speed to shovel users and are autonomously controlled by humans using remote controls. Shortly, Level 2 autonomy is expected.

3D printed gripper! 🐙

This gripper can pick up almost everything.

It's also 3D printed on a Formlabs printer in the SLA method. 🖨️

SLA can produce very fine details and smooth surface finishes. Printed parts have uniform strength in all directions.

Also, it can create intricate designs that are difficult to achieve with other methods.

See how well he handles a variety of objects, from crisps to a glass full of water.

I see many applications when it comes to pick and place applications in traditional robotics! 🦾

Drones that deliver beer! 🍻

The drone will get you a pint.

Inside a pub! 😳

A brewery in Minnesota (Hackamore Brewing Company) tried serving beer using drones, and a video of it went viral online. While it looks cool, challenges like short battery life and safety rules make it impractical for regular use. 

The brewery says it did it more as a fun experiment to talk about technology than to replace its staff. 

This creative idea shows how some businesses use unusual methods to get attention.

This robot will clean your shoes! 👟

Can we say this is a RaaB (Robot-as-a-Bootblack)?

A new robotic shoe refurbishment point was opened by Nike in London!

Upon placing your shoe inside the robot, a three-dimensional digital model of the shoe is produced that illustrates which parts of the upper, sidewalls, and outsole need to be cleaned. 🧽

Rips and tears in the shoe can then be repaired with patches. 

KUKA robots do the work while you watch patiently!

P.S. Even the laces are made from recyclables!

This set should be a teaching tool in every school! It's an engaging and interactive way to encourage young people to develop an interest in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). 🎓

Usain Bolt or a robot? 🏃🏻‍♂️

This robot achieves a speed of 46 km/h!

The Raptor is a fast-running biped robot developed at KAIST. There are two under-actuated legs and a tail modeled after velociraptors. 🦖

It runs on a treadmill with off-board power at a speed of 46 km/h. Stability over high obstacles is provided by tail-assisted pitch control. 

It's amazing how much speed this robot can develop while maintaining balance.

P.S. Can you guess the year of the development? You might be surprised! 👀

Lely Discovery Collector uses clever suction technology to manage manure on farms.

Cows are happier and healthier when barns are cleaner, producing better milk.
In this way, farmers can have a more hygienic farm.

Furthermore, it shows us how much agriculture can be automated. Using AI and robotics in farming promotes sustainability and a better future for everyone. 🐄

It's amazing how smart machines like these can handle tough jobs and make farming much cleaner and modern!

Pepper-picking robot! 🌶️

This robot uses a custom-made RGB-D camera and high-intensity LED flashlights to detect and harvest peppers in varying light conditions, including day and night. 🚥

It can operate for up to 20 hours per day and performs maturity classification based on the color and shape features of the peppers.

The robot is designed to harvest yellow peppers but could be adapted for other colors. Once positioned, it can work autonomously in greenhouse rows.

Integration with existing packaging and sorting equipment is possible as well.
