Working on enabling billions of customers enjoy their shopping journey on Amazon, directly from Search

Software Development Engineer I

- Delivered an automated filtering and auditing system for Amazon's wearable products, entirely managed with a single infrastructure based on AWS CDK (Lambda, Cloudwatch, S3) with Typescript, as well as internal processing platforms.
- Created ETL jobs based on Spark, with queries being exclusively managed in code with Java and Scala, allowing to have unit and integration tests in an full CI/CD fashion.
- Finished with 1st place in GraphML mutagenic classification task, top 0.3% in product matching task with multimodal tabular data, top 2% in NLP product safety identification task, all of which were internal machine learning competitions across Amazon, worldwide.

Software Development Engineer Intern

- Developed a large-scale image processing data pipeline for fashion-related items by creating and managing AWS resources such as EC2, Lambda, SQS, CloudWatch, DynamoDB and S3 with the AWS CDK and TypeScript.
- Reduced by x60 the processing time of images by parallelizing the execution of Python jobs and taking advantage of AWS Step Functions and AWS Batch processing.
- Delivered an automated and asynchronous pipeline workflow by adding CI/CD as well as unit and integration tests.

Air Liquide

- Contributed to the retro-engineering of an internal reporting solution by identifying key business partners and analyzing 193 reports through Google Apps scripts and Excel processing. 
- Improved customer experience by producing fully operational documentation for a principal client software and by interpreting end-user’s needs with Google Forms and Google Slides. 
- Increased back-end performance by inspecting the frequency and time of execution of SQL reports.

My career background:

I'm currently an L5 software engineer at Amazon in Madrid, working on core Search CX and Personalization. 
In 2022/2023, I delivered 2 successful billion-scale projects with multiple teams across different time zones.

I have worked with multiple code languages (although this doesn't make a difference), and with tech stack in the lines of AWS CDK, React applications, scheduling systems, backends with GraphQL, and simple AI applications.

My education background:

- I completed a Master's in Computer Science and Data Science with ESILV Paris
- I got a Master's in business development and marketing with EMLV Paris

Approaching system design problems can be harder than coding problems.

For one reason: ambiguity.

13 concepts to use when solving a system design problem:

𝟬. 𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿:
A load balancer efficiently distributes incoming network traffic across multiple servers to ensure no single server bears too much load.

𝟭. 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆:
An API Gateway acts as a single entry point for all client requests, providing a unified interface to various microservices.

𝟮. 𝗖𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲:
Caching stores recently accessed data for speedy retrieval, reducing the load on databases and improving response times.

𝟯. 𝗖𝗗𝗡:
A Content Delivery Network (CDN) stores static content closer to users to minimize latency and speed up content delivery.

𝟰. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲:
Distributed file storage ensures data is redundantly stored across multiple locations for fault tolerance and easy access.

Using a search index like Elasticsearch allows for scalable and fast search capabilities across large datasets.

𝟲. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲:
A notification service handles the delivery of messages or alerts to users across different platforms and devices.

𝟳. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀:
Data processing systems like Hadoop and Spark analyze large volumes of data, enabling scalable and complex computational operations.

𝟴. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗿: 
A distributed scheduler orchestrates and manages the execution of distributed tasks across various computing resources.

𝟵. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿:
The metadata server stores information about the structure of data, enabling efficient access and management.

Block servers manage the storage blocks in distributed file systems, which helps in data replication and retrieval.

Distributed logging collects logs from various services in a centralized manner for monitoring and troubleshooting.

Replication ensures data availability and durability, while partitioning helps in scaling databases by distributing data across different nodes.

9. Only do software development tasks you're assigned to at work.
8. Don't consider any privacy, security, or legal issues of your code.

Think of it this way:

There are two kinds of failure.

The first comes from never trying out your ideas because you are afraid, or because you are waiting for the perfect time.

This kind of failure you can never learn from, and such timidity will destroy you. 

The second kind comes from a bold and venturesome spirit. 

If you fail in this way, the hit that you take to your reputation is greatly outweighed by what you learn. 

Repeated failure will toughen your spirit and show you with absolute clarity how things must be done.

It is a curse to have everything go right on your first attempt. 

You will fail to question the element of luck, making you think that you have the golden touch. 

When you do inevitably fail, it will confuse and demoralize you past the point of learning. 

In any case, to apprentice as an entrepreneur, you must act on your ideas as early as possible, exposing them to the public, a part of you even hoping that you'll fail. 

You have everything to gain.
