We don't need a divine intervention (or we shouldn't need one?). We need politicians to take real climate action.

And Oil and Gas corporations to stop lobbying for inaction.

As essential bee populations rise 🌱🌴 
 
So, what's the great news? We have hope being offered in various territories. 

As of 2021, bee populations have been rising. Across most of Europe, LatAm, Africa and the wider world. 

Sadly, work does need to be done in the U.S and North Africa. But the U.S is the worst culprit for industrial farming and North Africa does have a desert it is trying to put at bay, so let's stay optimistic. 

Only the U.S. and North Africa has let the side down. With significant efforts paying off from work by conservationists on the ground. 

With conservations hard at work on the ground to reverse these situations. In both territories. 

Did you know: 

🐝 That the bee loves less than 40 days? It visits at least 1000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey. For us, it is only a teaspoon of honey, but for the bee, it is life.

🐝 A honey bee can fly for up to 6 miles per day and live for up to 4 weeks during spring and up to 6 months during the winter.

🐝 Visiting 50 - 100 flowers during a collection trip. Particularly liking herbs and single-flower varieties.

🐝 Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. That's 1 out of every 3 mouthfuls of food that we eat.

🐝 In countries like the UK, significant work is being done to support pollinators. With pockets of rewilding occurring to encourage bee populations.

🐝 Honeybees dance or 'waggle' to communicate with each other. It helps them to work together to find the best sources of food.

This is terrifying. 

Not the headline... I'm familiar with the science. No, what's terrifying is how far I had to dig through my news notifications to find this story.

What's terrifying is that this headline is not #trending on every social media platform.

What's terrifying is that I've seen more mentions of it being "international pet day" than I have the fact the fact we're on the brink of climate collapse. 

What's terrifying is that in our biggest ever election year, the #climatecrisis is not at the top of every political agenda. 

What's terrifying is the number of times in the past month I've been asked to be "less radical" in my speeches. I was told to avoid using the term "crisis", so as to not make anyone "anxious". Today on a briefing call, I was asked not to "be negative," "point fingers" or "make anyone out to be the bad guy". 

WHAT?! 

If there's one thing you do today, let it be sharing this headline. Share it on social media, with a colleague, or at the dinner table. It is on all of us to sound the alarm. We've run out of time for silence.

Brace yourselves, everyone! The Supreme Court just made history with a groundbreaking decision on climate change⚖️🔥

Fighting climate change is now linked to fundamental human rights in India. 

In a landmark ruling released on April 6, the Supreme Court of India affirmed the human right to combat the adverse effects of climate change as an essential constitutional right under Articles 21 and 14. 

🧬 Article 21 guarantees the protection of life and personal liberty. 
🟰 Article 14 guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the laws within the territory of India.

This verdict isn't just about legalities; 

It's a beacon for India's future climate actions. 

It's about protecting lives and livelihoods against one of the biggest threats of our time.

Perhaps I've been wrong about charities all along.

I used to think that charities were a bandage on a haemorrhaging, dysfunctional society. It’s no long term fix.

I loved working for them but it was always a never ending uphill battle.

But I might have been wrong about it all along. Charities could be the future instead.

We need more of them, many, many more. But how?

Most companies could easily be turned into social businesses that primarily serve a social or environmental function.

We can build a thriving society based on wellbeing rather than infinite growth.

In fact, it would be the only way we know of today to remain within planetary boundaries.

And this sums up the work I've been for the last 10 years more or less. 

First helping nonprofits be more like startups, and now helping startups be more like charities.

B Corp is a good starting point, but to go further check out steward ownership by Purpose Economy. 

“Steward-ownership is a corporate ownership structure that presents an alternative to shareholder value primacy.”

Who does the most damage then? Activists blocking a road or extreme storms blocking and damaging just about everything?

It's time for more radical measures, not less. Radical businesses, radical citizens, radical governments. 

Future heads of COP can't get away with saying that oil and gas have nothing to do with climate change anymore (as it happened at COP28).

This is Dubai yesterday. A warmer climate holds more moisture, meaning these events will happen more often. 

I experienced something similar in Sydney in March 2022. It was frightening. Many people lost their lives, many more lost their homes or possessions. Getting insurance became much more difficult for those affected. 

We’re still putting 50 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent into the atmosphere each year (and growing), so these events are just going to become more common.

“Dubai International Airport 🇦🇪 has recorded nearly 160 mm (6.3 inches) of rain in the last 24 hours. For context, most of the Dubaï metro typically averages 3.5 inches per year. 

This is truly a historic event for the area.”

Sustainability is not fun. But maybe it should be?

It's certainly not "trendy" (as I've been told last week).

We’re not trying to be ambitious.

We’re not trying to make a difference. 

More like trying to do what’s right.

There’s so much destruction and lying going on. 

And the clock keeps ticking. 

I want to be able to tell my kids “Yes I tried to do something. Maybe it didn't work, maybe it was too late, but I've tried.”

Because a part of me is fairly sure it won't be enough.

But maybe, just maybe. Who knows?

We have a unique shot at not only fixing the climate but also BUILDING a better society for everyone, animals and plants included.

So what do we do? 

For now, I plan to become a professional pain in the butt - arguable my standout, lifelong skill - to greedy corporations and lobbies who sell everyone's future out for a quick buck.

Sustainability is not fun. But maybe it should be.

Maybe we should be having fun chasing down those planet-killers. 

The fake Atmospheric Agency Jamie Kolkot is a great example of that!

Why do we keep chasing GDP growth like it's the Holy Grail? Its inventor himself said not to. 
 
We can’t pursue real sustainability as long as we keep using GDP as our key measure of progress. 
 
Simon Kuznets warned many times that GDP, his invention, was a POOR TOOL for policymaking. 
 
GDP was a stroke of genius following the Great Depression.  
 
It summarised in one number the economic strength of an entire nation and gave policymakers some idea on to how to improve it.  
 
Incredibly useful to account for resources during WWII as well.  
 
And yet...  
 
We now need a world where success isn't measured by wealth, but by well-being and sustainability.  
 
That's not something GDP can do.  
 
GDP has become the global yardstick for economic prowess.  
 
Countries vie for higher rankings like players in a never-ending game of Monopoly.  
 
But here's the twist: GDP values quantity over quality, silent on the nuances of environmental degradation, social inequality, or overall wellbeing. 
 
It drives an extractive system (more material extraction for more growth every year), that simply isn't sustainable much longer.  
 
We currently extract 92bn tons of raw material from the Earth every year.  
 
We need to create new metrics that value sustainable growth, that put people and planet on par with profit.

Europe is warming about TWICE as fast the global average. And yet... 

Citizen action and activists are producing incredible results. That's where we'll get the real change from. 

Just like the group of older women who sued their government in Switzerland to demand climate action - and WON ! 

And they're right, older people are incredibly at risk of heatwaves. 

In fact, heatwave-linked deaths in Europe have increased 30% over past 20 years (FT).

"Nyyeeh what about the heatwave of 1975", your neighbour says? 

That's one occurrence. 

23 of the 30 most severe European heatwaves have occurred since 2000.

We need more citizen action and more activists winning now and every day.

Did you know that Europe is warming 2x faster than other continents 🥵🌶️ ?  
 
Given all the accumulated, historical CO2 we've pumped into the atmosphere (which hangs around between 300 to 1,000 years), it's probably well deserved too.  
 
Still, the amazing news recently of those 70 year old Swiss ladies who won their court case against their government for lack of legal action gives me hope...  
 
And they're in being worried because heatwave-linked deaths in Europe reported up 30% over past 20 years - and they're first in line. 
 
We need more radicals who upset the status quo, not fewer.
