Last week, on a business trip, I ran out of shaving foam.

I called the hotel concierge to request a standard ₹100 can of shaving foam.
They hummed and hawed, made multiple calls, said they’d have to send someone to the market in the hotel car and bill me for it.

I told them not to bother. Ordered it on a quick commerce app — and it arrived in 6 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬.

Hotels seem to be falling behind in keeping up with consumers and the shifting, higher standards they have become accustomed to in their daily lives.

- Need shaving foam? Quick commerce delivers it faster than the concierge.
- Hungry? Why pay a premium for average-tasting room service when food delivery apps offer better food at better prices.
- Coffee? The corner café serves a real cup at a third the price of that automatic machine brew.
- Head massage? Urban Company > spa appointment.

Hotels are slowly becoming just a roof over your head.
Almost every other experience is better - and cheaper - outside the hotel than inside.

Time for the hotel industry to reinvent itself.

To become not just a place to sleep, but a contemporary, delightful part of the travel experience again.

About 10-12 years ago, a wave of Indian startups offshored their domiciles to Delaware and Singapore.

A cottage industry of “specialist consultants” had sprung up to help you do it, for a fee, ofcourse. They would hand out neat, unmarked sheets with boxes and arrows explaining how the structure would work.

The funny part?
Every consultant had a different interpretation of what was legal and what wasn’t. That alone told us everything we needed to know - if the “experts” themselves weren’t aligned, it wasn’t a good idea to play in the grey.

But even beyond compliance, it never made logical sense:
Why would a company with 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬, and 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 need its parent company to be sitting in Delaware or Singapore?

We (Snapdeal, now under AceVector) decided to stay domiciled in India.
In hindsight, a simple, common-sense decision - and one that saved us a costly reversal later. Many who followed the offshoring trend are now spending a fortune to re-domicile back in India.

Sometimes, people around us can overcomplicate things.
All we need to do is trust common sense.

Entrepreneur and Investor

We've had the great fortune of building (AceVector) and investing (Titan Capital) in many wonderful businesses. But one that I would have loved to be a part of as an investor, but am not, is Lenskart.com. They introduced a playbook of Omnichannel retail that has been the blueprint for so many wonderful new age brands. Their ambition and success of expanding globally is as inspiring as their push into building world class manufacturing in India. Very few companies have done so many things right as Peyush Bansal, Amit Chaudhary and team have done. 

Wishing them the very best as they soon embark on their new journey as a public company.

Startup fashion brands in India are becoming very large, very fast and profitably so. Historically considered a touch-me-not category by VCs, I am pleasantly surprised by how quickly some of them are scaling through a combination of:

- Omnichannel strategy (usually using Unicommerce) + 
- Strong POV on merchandise differentiation + 
- Social media content & branding muscle + 
- In-house manufacturing

Numerous 100cr+ fashion brands out there now that started in the last 5-7 years.

Over the past decade, the “platform + adjacencies” model has emerged as one of the most powerful engines of growth and resilience across tech businesses - both globally and in India.

Globally, leaders like Prosus, Sea Group, and GoTo have shown how building a connected ecosystem can multiply value:

- Prosus evolved from classifieds into food delivery, fintech, and edtech - united by a disciplined capital allocation model.
- Sea Group built a flywheel where gaming (Garena), e-commerce (Shopee), and fintech (SeaMoney) reinforce each other.
- GoTo integrated mobility, commerce, and financial services into one interlinked digital platform.

In India, companies like InfoEdge and Eternal (earlier Zomato) have followed similar paths - expanding from a strong core into adjacent categories and investments. InfoEdge started with Naukri, but built and backed platforms across real estate, education, and multiple digital verticals. Eternal moved from food delivery into quick commerce, events, and B2B supply chains - each adjacency deepening user engagement and revenue resilience.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
This ecosystem mindset represents the next phase of India’s tech evolution.
It’s not about building only one big business - it’s about building a network of adjacent businesses that amplify each other.

This enables companies to:
- Hedge category risk while leveraging shared infrastructure and data
- Capture more of the customer journey across adjacent verticals, hence expanding TAMs
- Drive capital efficiency through synergistic growth rather than linear expansion, leveraging shared resources across the group

𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐖𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠
We’re now seeing more Indian companies adopt this model by combining wholly-owned businesses, platform plays, and strategic investments under one umbrella.
