It’s that season again where I have to remind my fellow men: 

No lobsters on the pants unless you’re literally holding corn on the cob at the moment you’re wearing them 

No anchors, sails or flags on the belt unless you’re a Kennedy

Brown shoes with white soles are for beta males 

Seersucker always looks like s*** in real life, only works on the mannequin, don’t be the one in your group who thinks they can “pull it off” this summer - you cannot 

Madras is lame, also never looks good IRL, only on the website 

Waxing is not as traumatic as it looks, they can do just your shoulders and upper back in under 20 minutes, don’t be shy - make an appointment and go 

Nothing sleeveless if you can’t curl 30 lb dumbbells at a minimum, otherwise no one wants to see your spaghetti arms 

No sunglass cord around your neck - if you lose them it wasn’t meant to be, if they’re Oakleys try to lose them intentionally before someone offers you a minor league baseball contract 

Leather shoes without socks is disgusting and I will have you arrested (boat shoes and driving mocs excluded but please consider a modern no-show liner if possible) 

No flip flops on an airplane and for god’s sake get a pedicure once a month until Labor Day - I’ve been told the first thing women notice is the hands and feet, it’s evolutionary, either way don’t have claws or talons it’s 2024

Things you can stop doing here for better results

1. Using language you would never use in a conversation with your friends. Imagine telling someone IRL how “humbled” you are every time something good happens. They would think you’re crazy. Talk regular. 

2. Promoting things you know damn well no one cares about. If it doesn’t get any traction offline, your LinkedIn audience isn’t going to save it online. 

3. Conference panel photo with empty seats at the front tables. This is basic non-loser stuff every high school kid would tell you. Don’t post yourself talking to an empty room. Crop out the chairs at least. 

4. “Here we grow again!” If you’re not growing you’re dying. This is a baseline. What do you want credit for next, breathing oxygen? 

5. Not everything demands you to be “honored” all the time. “Cool, thx” is a normal response. Be normal. 

6. Selfies shooting upward. Ryan Gosling doesn’t look good from this angle. If it’s worth posting a pic, it’s worth spending literally one second to elevate your arm for a decent shot. It’s 2024, children in strollers have figured this out. 

7. Stop boring everyone with routine posts. Predictable = instant apathy. “Here she goes again with the Quote of the Day…” You can and should routinely post. Just don’t announce that that’s what you’re doing.

8. Acting like attention is free. Before pressing publish here, ask yourself this question: “Does this post have the potential to educate or entertain people?” If it’s an obvious “No”, delete it and start over. If they’re not going to learn or laugh, it’s a fail. If you fail all the time, you become a “scroll past” account. That’s bad.

Social media success comes from doing less things, more thoughtfully. Eliminating clutter makes the stuff you are actually passionate about have an impact.

My theory is catching on…what if 5% interest rates are actually STIMULATING the economy instead of slowing it???

Chipotle announced a 50-for-1 stock split last week. What makes it notable is the why.

“In conjunction with the split, the company will award a one-time equity grant to all its restaurant general managers and all employees with more than 20 years of service.”

I love this story. Chipotle Mexican Grill gets it. Surest route to quality control is to turn the people who deal with your customers every day into owners. 

Stock splits can be dopey or they can be useful. Berkshire B shares split to facilitate the railroad acquisition. Apple went 7-for-1 to gain inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Chipotle’s split is smart. I’ll add it to this list.

When I am asked what I worry about in the market, the answer usually is “nothing”, because everyone else in the market seems to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying, and so all of the relevant worries seem to be covered. My worries won’t have any impact except to detract from something much more useful, which is trying to make good long-term investment decisions.

Ben Carlson, CFA says the stock market loves higher earnings. Whether or not it likes higher interest rates is not a black and white answer. 

There is a high correlation between the cities where people have returned to work and the percentage of New Yorkers who make up that city's work force. This is why NYC has the second highest Return To Work ranking in America while Miami (which is now a de facto annexed sixth borough of NYC) is number one. 

My scientific conclusion is as follows: 

Anywhere there is a high concentration of New Yorkers, shit is getting done. Fight me on this if you dare, but my data will be-clown you.
