There are few things more emotionally draining than being on the job search.

Even when things are going well, such as you’re landing interviews and having good conversations…

…The powerlessness. The uncertainty. The gaps in communication.

It’s enough to drive you into torturous rumination. 

And then if things are NOT going well - that REALLY messes with your sanity.

It's essential to prioritize self-care and show yourself the same understanding and empathy you would extend to a dear friend.

Remember that sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is to slow down and take a break.

Regardless of where you are in your job search, you deserve to:

🍊 Prioritize self-care: Set aside time each day to nurture your mind and body, whether through meditation, exercise, or simply savoring a comforting cup of tea.

🍊 Engage in activities that bring you joy: Pursue hobbies and interests that light you up from within, as they can provide a much-needed respite from the stress of job hunting.

🍊 Allow yourself time away from the job search: Give yourself permission to step back and recharge, knowing that this break will ultimately help you approach your search with renewed energy and clarity.

When changing careers, it's tempting to apply for lower level jobs. DON'T do this!

At least, don't go TOO low.

You don't need to "start over" completely.

If you want to stand out in your next job interview, here's a powerful strategy that will make you unforgettable to potential employers.

Step 1: Identify your most impressive professional accomplishment. This could be closing a significant sale, organizing a successful event, turning around a failing project, etc.

Next, break down this accomplishment into three key components:

🍊 Challenge: Describe the problem or challenge you faced. What was the situation that required your attention and expertise?

🍊 Action: Detail the specific actions you took to address the challenge. How did you approach the problem, and what steps did you take to resolve it?

🍊 Result: Highlight the outcomes of your actions. What were the measurable results, and how did your efforts contribute to the success of the project or company?

Now, craft this information into a compelling story and practice telling it out loud at least ten times.

🍊Then, tell this story in EVERY interview.

It’s amazing how you’ll be able to work this into so many interviews when you make it a goal.

By integrating this story into your interview responses, you not only make yourself more memorable but also provide tangible examples of your capabilities and how they translate into potential success in the new role.

I am a raging extrovert - and it’s a problem sometimes.

I read "Multipliers" by Liz Wiseman, which dove into how a leader can multiply or diminish their teams.

It revealed a surprising truth...

True multipliers aren't the ones doing most of the talking. Instead, they excel in the art of inquiry and active listening. 

It made me think back to my leadership style.

It got me thinking, am I more of a talker or a listener?

I found that I often led conversations in meetings. I did so, without meaning to, and I would overshadow the brilliance of my team members. 

It was a light bulb moment.

So I began to take a step back.

I asked more questions and created space for others to contribute. Our meetings became even more productive. I didn't even need to talk as much.

As an extrovert, I'm now training to think before I speak and slow down to offer space to others.

It's also key to remember that introverts often have great insights. We might overlook these because they lack the instinct to blurt them out as extroverts do.

So let this post serve as a nudge - to extroverts to calm down, and to introverts to please speak up!

An executive once told me that I wasn't good with change, and my initial reaction was one of disbelief and defensiveness. 

As someone who prided myself on knowing how to operate in the fast-paced world of growth stage companies, I thought I was adaptable.

However, I realized that once a plan was set, I would urge the team to not deviate from it.

This meant I always hit deadlines, but admittedly, sometimes changing the plan is the better solution.

Receiving this unexpected feedback was a humbling experience. After the initial sting of defensiveness subsided, I had two important realizations:

🍊I needed to embrace flexibility and recognize that while structure has its place, the ability to pivot when necessary is equally valuable.

Adapting to change is a crucial skill in both personal and professional growth.

🍊I also recognized the importance of constructive criticism, even when it feels uncomfortable at first.

Often, it's those difficult truths that hold the key to our greatest opportunities for development and self-improvement.

It's not about being perfect, but rather about having the courage to face our vulnerabilities and learn from them.

Wow. There was a point (several years ago) that I was prepared to completely give up on my YouTube channel. 

After 3 years of pouring my heart and soul into my YouTube channel, I only had 23,000 subscribers, and I felt burned out and discouraged.

Despite the milestone, I was losing money on it, and questioning whether it was worth the countless hours of scripting, filming, editing, and promoting that went into each video.

I spent dozens of hours a week creating content on my own, unable to afford outsourcing. It seemed like an uphill battle with no end in sight.

But instead of throwing in the towel, I decided to produce fewer videos (to get some of my time and sanity back) and got strategic.

2018: 383 subs
2019: 3,603 subs
2020: 12,426 subs
2021: 66,212 subs
2022: 170,364 subs
Today: 360,000+

In 2020, when I was ready to give it all up, I couldn't have imagined the incredible journey that lay ahead. 

Today, the channel gets 10+ success story comments A DAY!

And to think I almost killed the channel and deprived people of the resource 🙈

This then led me to be featured by ABC, Bloomberg, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Business Insider, to name a few.

People wanted coaching from me so I went on to start my program Standout Job Search that has turned hundreds of job seekers into Job Shoppers 

If you find yourself in the "I want to give up" stage, remember this: don't keep doing the same thing over and over again. 

Seek counsel from someone who knows their stuff and get their help to change your approach. It's not just about consistency; it's about reevaluating when things aren't working.

Many companies VISCERALLY HATE job hoppers.

When I worked in recruiting, “job hopping” was the #1 reason a hiring manager would reject a qualified candidate I put in the short pile for them to review.

“Job Hopping” is the pattern of moving from one job to the next in a brief amount of time.

The reason some hiring managers are so adverse to it is they don’t want the burden of having to re-hire and train the same role year after year (especially for skilled roles with longer ramp-up times). 

On the other hand, moving jobs more frequently can benefit one’s career, such as leading to higher pay and faster increases in job titles.

In this video, I dive into when job hopping is the right move (this depends on several factors), why companies are so against job hopping, and how you can overcome any hesitations about your background…even if it is “hoppy.”

Job hopping doesn't have to be a career killer. With the right approach and a compelling narrative, you can turn your unique career path into a strength.

Have you ever had to pay money to apply for a job?

Recently, I stumbled upon a job application that required applicants to donate to a charity to complete the process. 

This example reflects what companies are doing to avoid mass flooding of job boards.

When I posted this video originally, some of the comments included:

“As a general rule, if a job requires me to pay money in any capacity up front… I assume it’s a scam.”

“I bet that they’re claiming those donations on their taxes for the credit for someone else’s donation”

“I think more companies should start doing this. Because I will know I don’t want to work for such a scummy company and I won’t apply.”

I can see why a company may add a free response question, or other steps to ensure the candidate isn’t auto-blasting their resume out to the opportunity.

But transacting is unnecessary and crossing a line.

Two other comments wrote:

“Former ballet dancer- $25-$50 “application fee” for every company audition I attended. 🙄”

“@Post Office has a $89 fee to apply, but it's refunded if you don't get hired... like I got $90 to waste”

So this isn’t unheard of.

For me, what’s wild is that we all accept that we must pay universities an application fee in order for them to give us permission to pay them more.

In the end, online applications are the worst thing to ever happen to the job search.

Companies are flooded with applications.

And great candidates are going unnoticed.

But let’s not charge applicants (and potentially judge them based on the donation amount and choice of charity).

Your social media profiles play a crucial role in your job search.

Hiring managers often turn to social media to gain insights beyond your resume. 

In a study by Express Employment Professionals, the vast majority of employers expressed their willingness to terminate current employees for sharing specific content on social media.

Perhaps even more shocking is that approximately 1 in 5 employers in The Harris Poll's survey indicated they wouldn't invite someone for an interview if they couldn't locate them online, which might give the impression of hiding something.

The survey also shed light and claimed that:

70% of employers feel all companies should screen candidates' social media.

78% believe employees should keep work-appropriate profiles.

88% would terminate staff for inappropriate personal posts.

A staggering 55% of employers using social media screenings have rejected candidates due to content found.

So, what can you do to ensure your social media presence is working for you, not against you?

🍊Invest time in creating a compelling LinkedIn profile and make it public (you should be found online, and it should be your LinkedIn profile)

🍊Either scrub your social media profiles for depictions of partying, health issues (struggles with mental health, addiction, so on…), complaints about work, or controversial/political/religious opinions. 

🍊 Or make your profiles challenging to find and access, such as using a different last name (many people opt for their middle name)

It’s not fair, but it’s happening.

Go into the job search with eyes wide open, and make sure your social media accounts are only helping, not hurting.
