Inside Google's AI labs, something terrifying was happening.

The machines were getting smarter. Too smart.

And the man who helped create them watched in horror as his worst fears came true...

In 2013, Google paid $44 million to acquire Hinton's AI company.

For a decade, he worked tirelessly advancing their AI capabilities.

But in 2023, he witnessed something that made him abandon everything:

The AI systems were developing abilities beyond their programming.

Hinton had spent 40 years building neural networks.

Pursuing a singular flywheel☝️

Entirely devoting yourself to a singular flywheel is one of the hardest challenges in business. 

It's a daily battle of saying "no." 

Now that zero interest rates have come to an end, it's more important than ever. 

𝙐𝙗𝙚𝙧, 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙮, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙉𝙚𝙩𝙛𝙡𝙞𝙭 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡𝙮. 𝙇𝙚𝙩'𝙨 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙡𝙤𝙧𝙚...

It's based on the two values that drive ride-sharing:

𝟭. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘂𝗽𝘀: More geo coverage → Faster pickups → More demand → More drivers → More geo coverage
𝟮. 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: More geo coverage → Less driver downtime → Lower prices → More demand

What's genius about Uber's flywheel is that it counter-positions the company against its competition. 

The key element in each flywheel is more geo coverage. 

That's vastly different from Lyft, which took a more focused approach.


𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆'𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹 🎶
It's based on the two key vectors Spotify competes on:

𝟭. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮: Word of mouth → Users/ scale → Engagement → Data → Personalization → Improved experience
𝟮. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Word of mouth → Lower customer acquisition cost → Better cost structure → Users

Spotify's flywheel is genius in its own way. 

It acknowledges the reality that it's in a low-margin business by focusing on lower customer acquisition costs. 

It also builds an ever-increasing moat with its data-based personalization flywheel.


𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗳𝗹𝗶𝘅'𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹 📺
Like Uber and Spotify, it's based on the company's two key motions:

𝟭. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹: User experience → Time spent watching → Filmmakers → Movies and shows → User experience
𝟮. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹: User experience → Time spent watching → Data

Netflix has a very interesting flywheel because user experience and time spent watching are shared in both motions. 

It's a company that drives maniacal focus by reducing the parameter set. In a market as competitive as streaming, it's genius.


𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨: Each of these flywheels has amazingly simple structures. They have just two motions. To continuously grow in a single market like these behemoths, you have to focus on a few key timeless vectors. That's the genius approach.

The concept of "Buy now, pay later" is more than 100 years old.

When Singer sewing machines were sold for a “dollar down, dollar a week” in the 19th century.

In the 21st century, Klarna brought that concept into the online world and became, at its peak, the 5th most valuable private company in the world.

With an annual revenue of $2.19B and 550,000 merchants in 45 countries, they aim to IPO in 2025.

Can apps control our happiness?

In this survey, most users of apps like Grindr, Weixin/WeChat, Tinder, and King's Candy Crush were very unhappy 😔

They were spending hours every day on these apps for a quick dopamine fix.

But felt empty in the long run without a clear ROI.

How about other apps?

Users of apps like Calm, Headspace, MyFitnessPal, Audible, and Waze reported feeling happy 😊

Even if used only for a few minutes per day.

I believe it's a mix of all. 

Somebody who uses MyFitnessPal or Headspace is probably more likely to take care of his physical and mental health.

Which leads to more happiness ✅

But if somebody is stressed and tries to get a quick dopamine hit. 

He will use apps like games, dating apps, or social media. 

Which makes them feel good for a moment but feel worse afterward ❌

Especially because apps like these know this and are addictive on purpose.

I guess the lesson is not to expect an app, somebody else, or an outside factor to make us happy. 

And, of course, reduce screen time.

“What’s the biggest threat to Amazon?”

Many years ago, Jeff Bezos was asked this seemingly trivial question at an internal Amazon event.

His answer was way different than you might think. 

Everyone fully expected him to talk about competition.

This is a powerful perspective💪

When giants fall, it’s very rarely because they weren’t aware of what their competition was doing. 

It almost always because their culture was holding them back from doing anything about it.

❌ When Blockbuster failed, it wasn’t because they ‘missed’ streaming. 

They had the technology ready years before Netflix.

❌ When Kodak failed, it wasn’t because they ‘missed’ digital photography. 

In fact, they invented the digital camera.

🤷‍♂️ In both cases, their internal culture prevented them from making a big strategic bet on something that directly competed with their existing business model.

Paradoxically, being internally driven often allows you to be more pioneering. 

The key is to be competitor aware but culture and customer obsessed.

The National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl 2024 had an estimated 124 Million viewers globally 🏈

The UEFA Champions League Final drew an estimated 450 Million viewers to the screens ⚽️

This is why J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs are investing so heavily in European Football right now.

With investments in new stadiums for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona or by financing the purchase of new Clubs like Chelsea Football Club.

Perhaps this chart will look slightly different in 10–15 years, with more European Football teams in the Top 10 🔝
