Diving deep into the rapid phasedown of natural gas - a critical analysis.

As we all move towards a greener future, people are talking more about natural gas and how it affects our planet. Many countries want to greatly lower the harmful gases they release into the air, so quickly reducing the use of natural gas is becoming very important for us to think about.

By 2030, the world is set to produce 71% more gas than what would keep global warming under 1.5°C. We're looking at a 41% rise in gas power plants and a 173% boost in the capacity to export liquified natural gas (LNG). This growth threatens the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that emissions from current and future fossil fuel projects will cause warming beyond 1.5°C unless we reduce them soon.

➡ One of the key challenges in this transition is the reliance on natural gas for energy generation. While it has been considered a cleaner alternative to coal and oil, the extraction and combustion of natural gas still contribute significantly to global warming. It is essential to explore innovative solutions that can accelerate the phasedown process without compromising energy security.

➡ Along with this, the economic implications of reducing natural gas usage cannot be overlooked. Many communities and industries depend on natural gas for their daily operations, and a sudden phasedown could have far-reaching consequences.

➡ In addition, the role of technology in enabling a rapid phasedown of natural gas cannot be underestimated. Advancements in renewable energy sources, energy storage, and smart grid technologies offer promising opportunities to reshape the energy landscape.

How can smart grid technologies enable a rapid phasedown of natural gas?

Researchers in Rwanda and Germany have found that by 2040, Africa could use renewable energy like water, wind, and sun to make 76% of its electricity. They made a special list called the Renewable Power Plant Database Africa, which shows all the places in Africa that can make clean energy.

The study shows that water power will be the main way to make electricity, making up 82% of Africa’s renewable energy. Some countries, like Nigeria and Zimbabwe, could even stop using dirty fuels entirely.

Right now, 600 million people in Africa don't have electricity. To fix this, African countries need to work together, share power, and make sure the changes don't hurt local communities.

To switch to clean energy by 2050, Africa needs more money for renewable energy projects. The World Economic Forum started a project to help get more money for clean energy in places that are still developing. 

There's also a program called "Clean Power, Grids and Electrification" that helps businesses, governments, and groups work together to use more clean energy by 2030.

📍 Norway's wealth fund, exceeding £1 trillion, has been substantially bolstered by a 78% tax rate on fossil fuel enterprises, with $89 billion collected in taxes from these companies just last year.

📍 Norway is also the sole owner of Statkraft, which is the largest producer of renewable energy in Europe.

📍 Critiques suggest that windfall taxes are seen as more of a publicity move rather than a substantive economic strategy.

📍 Adding to the statistics, the share of renewables in the EU's energy consumption reached 23% in 2022, reflecting an upward revision of the EU's 2030 renewable energy target to 42.5%.

📍 By 2025, renewables are projected to surpass coal as the primary source of electricity generation globally, with a significant increase in wind and solar power installations expected over the next few years
