At 6'6" (198cm) I've gone past the category known as "handsome tall"

Also known as "Chris Hemsworth/Thor tall"

I've entered the next category, which I call 

"Walking through an airport, people stop what they’re doing and stare at you...tall"

The kind of tall, where people like to TELL ME that I'm tall.

But what is intriguing...

...is that this varies depending on where I am:

In the United Kingdom...

I am 3.2 standard deviations above the mean.

Only 1 in 1,500 adult men would be taller.

Mainly whispers & sideways looks.

In the UAE this is more pronounced

3.5 s.d. above the mean.

A bit of an outlier, for sure.

Some mothers cross the road with their children.

My saving grace is:

The Netherlands!

The tallest nation on earth!

Well...it turns out I'm still tall there too.

2.4 s.d. above the mean.

Occasionally mistaken for a windmill by tourists.

It looks like I'm out of options, so let's take this the OTHER way.

And this is where it gets interesting.

In Bolivia, I am:

5.2 s.d. above the mean.

5.2!

Statistically speaking...

...only 1 in 13 million would be taller.

AND...with a population of only 12 million

IN THEORY

I would be the tallest person there.

I could be a king (or a key circus attraction)

Anyway, the point is, if you find this interesting.

Not my height, but statistics & the like...

...then I think you'd make a great Data Scientist or Analyst

If you think Data Science = AI, you're missing out.

Data Science is the field of creating value with data.

And this can take many, many forms.

A good Data Scientist uses whatever tools, concepts, or skills are required to solve the most pressing needs of the business.

A good Data Scientist starts with the business problem and works back toward an appropriate solution, not the other way around.

AI is part of Data Science, and will be used when it's the right time and place.

Divorce. Family illness & death. Mental health struggles. Financial and career pressure.

These are the kinds of deeply personal struggles I never imagined I'd be talking to students about as a Data Science coach.

It turns out that being a mentor in this field isn’t just about teaching Python or SQL or Machine Learning or AI.

Over the years, students have come to me not only for career guidance, but for support through some of the toughest moments in their lives.

I’ve had people confide in me about family emergencies, losing jobs, or desperately needing to pivot careers to support their families.

Helping them find a way forward in whatever small way I can, in both in their careers and in life, has turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

It forges strong personal relationships which I think so many of us miss these days, and it genuinely motivates me to keep doing what I'm doing.

Why I walked away from a mountain of Amazon stock and never looked back.

During my two years at Amazon, I worked with some of the smartest people I've ever met. But there was a side of the culture that didn't sit well with me.

You may have heard about this, but at Amazon, you don't present slides in meetings, you present written narratives that are reviewed by your peers and superiors.

The problem was that every time you walked into one of those meetings, you could feel people ready to pick your ideas apart.

It wasn't just about making the product better, it often felt like a game of one-upmanship, where people wanted to prove how clever they were by tearing down someone else’s work.

Over time, I realised I was starting to do the same thing, and that was my sign it was time to leave.

I walked away from a lot of unvested stock because I knew I didn't want to continue down that path.

That experience heavily shaped how I run Data Science Infinity today. I want to create a space where people feel supported rather than judged, and where we build each other up rather than compete to knock each other down.

My program, Data Science Infinity, is one of the highest revenue-earning courses on the global ed-tech platform Teachable.

This is a byproduct of a decision I made early on in terms of how I would run the business, and I've been lucky that it has paid off.

I prioritised results over revenue.

People over profits.

While I still need to put food on the table, from day one, I built DSI around 1:1 personalised support that never runs out and a curriculum that never stops evolving.

We keep up with the latest trends while still focusing heavily on what truly adds value in the real world.

An example of this is the brand-new module on GenAI, LLMs, and Agentic AI.

While students build up the key foundational knowledge and problem-solving systems, they are always learning what's most relevant and in demand in the industry, too.

I've found that when you focus on making your students wildly successful, they become your biggest advocates.

They spread the word, they leave amazing reviews, and the growth follows naturally.

While other courses, bootcamps, platforms, and institutes are looking to cut costs, the real secret is to do the opposite:

Put student results first, and success becomes a byproduct.

That’s the entire model.

GenAI is insane, but in practice it's still stuck at the proof-of-concept stage

There is no end of mind-blowing demos prototypes, but turning that into a real, fully-fledged, secure, and reliable product is a whole different ball game.

It’s still the human skill of knowing what problems actually need solving, understanding the business context, interpreting those metrics, and tieing together the full chain of infrastructure that actually turns a prototype into a product.
