How do past emotional experiences quietly shape present state shifts?

Today, I’m beginning a reflection series!

It’s based on patterns I consistently observe in both my personal and professional coaching practice.

They are the invisible emotional patterns influencing our daily decisions, we can call them “Emotional Imprints”.
These are the internal responses formed during moments of intensity. 

Yes, that’s right, intense enough for the nervous system to remember.

One pattern that can be noticed pretty often and that is ‘going blank’!

Have you ever gone completely blank in a moment that mattered?

Some moments, where you are a capable professional.

- Prepared.
- Experienced.
- And suddenly, ‘silence’.

In a recent coaching engagement, a senior leader shared how they would “lose their voice” during high-stakes reviews. 

Was it because they lacked clarity? No!

👉It could be because of being exposed again to the tone of authority, that unconsciously activated an older imprint of being dismissed early in their career.

Nothing was happening in the present.

Yet the nervous system remembered.

🥶And the state shifted into freeze.

On The Temperament Curve™, when an imprint is activated, we can move into a reactive state before we consciously register it.

- Sometimes that looks like defensiveness.
- Sometimes over-explaining.
And sometimes going blank.

The work wasn’t about confidence-building.
It was about recognising the imprint and shortening the distance back to resourcefulness.

That shift changed how they showed up and how they were heard.

Why do emotionally intelligent leaders stop explaining themselves?

❌It is not ego….It is not arrogance.

🗣️At some point they realise the urge to over explain is not about the present moment.
It is often an old emotional imprint asking for approval.

👁️When they recognise that shift, they pause.

They regulate as,

🙏They choose self respect over validation.

🔥Notice that not every misunderstanding needs correction.

😶Know that not every silence needs filling.

Why We Avoid Difficult Conversations Even When We Know They’re Necessary?

Often, it’s because the conversation doesn’t just represent the present issue.

It activates something related that has happened in the past as well..

❓An imprint of conflict that led to rejection.

❓An experience where speaking up felt unsafe.

❓A memory of being misunderstood or dismissed.

As a result, we delay.
Sometimes we totally withdraw.

Also we convince ourselves that it’s “not important.”

On the surface, it looks like diplomacy👍

Underneath, it may be a reactive state protecting an older experience🥹

It is about the emotional residue we leave in people’s minds and hearts.

Are you still operating from your old mental framework?

Here’s a small story that made it so clear to me.

Once a senior professional attended a leadership workshop.
During a reflection exercise, the facilitator asked a simple question:
“What emotional imprint do you leave on people when they interact with you?”

He replied confidently.

“I think my high efficiency, decisive power, and result-oriented approach helped me connect with people really well.”

But then a colleague quietly added,
“Yes… but sometimes people leave your room feeling smaller.”


…An uncomfortable silence developed there.


The leader was surprised by the feedback.
As he never intended to leave that kind of impact.

He realised, for years he had been operating from an old mental framework:
• Speed over listening
• Authority over curiosity
• Answers over questions

It had once helped him succeed.
But it was now shaping an emotional imprint he never meant to create.

That day he understood something powerful,

“Maybe the frameworks that built our success
are not always the ones that build people.”

Because every day, in every conversation, we leave behind something invisible, and that is,

An Emotional Imprint

The real question is not only what we achieve.

It is also:

What do people feel after interacting with us?

🔥So, here’s today’s question:
Am I able to consciously shape the emotional imprint I leave behind?

When stakes are high, does logic guide you or does emotion quietly take over?

🎯During a coaching session, a senior leader once told me,
“I know I’m right in the meetings. I’ve done the analysis. I have the data. But something shifts the moment I’m challenged.”

He was rational, carried significant experience, also was fully prepared.

What was happening that, in high-stakes reviews, his tone would shift from mild to sharp, and his pace would increase, leading to interruptions.

Later, he would justify it as being “direct” and “efficient.”

🎯When we slowed the moment down in coaching, something emerged that helped him recognise a pattern.

The challenge from a peer wasn’t just professional disagreement.

It activated an imprint, impacted years earlier, in a different role, where public questioning had costed him credibility.

The body had registered that experience as threat.

So, when stakes were high, emotion moved first.

Logic followed not to decide, but to defend.

The data was sound.
But the ‘state’ had shifted.

Once he recognised the pattern with an open mindset, he realised that the work wasn’t about communication skills.

It was about “regulation”.

In the next review cycle, he became aware of the activation: the tonal shift, the urgency. This time, he paused intentionally, setting aside bias before responding to the discussion.

His contribution in the discussion barely changed.

What truly changed was his energy. And with it, the outcome.

The room responded differently.

Because he did the inner work by becoming aware.

When stakes are high, logic doesn’t disappear.
However emotion often speaks first.

The question is,
🔥 Can you recognise the internal shift early enough to respond with intention rather than react?

When your credibility is challenged, does your state remain stable?

Composure is rarely tested when things are going well.

Over the past 4 weeks, The Temperament Curve™ Series explored one central idea;

🌟Behaviour is not random.
It is state-driven.

🌟We examined reaction versus regulation.

🌟We unpacked why looking calm is not the same as being regulated.

🌟We spoke about recovery speed, awareness, and sustainable approach to perform better.

🌟Most importantly, we reframed leadership.

- Because leadership is not defined by what you know.
It is shaped by the version of you that shows up when it matters.

- That version is determined by your state.

🎯The reactive version of you.
🎯The regulated version of you.
🎯The resourceful version of you.

Where intelligence & experience are same.

However, state & impact are different. 

Most leadership conversations focus on skills, strategy, and style.

The curve concept shifts the lens to something more fundamental:
🌟Who is leading in the moment your reactive version, or your regulated one?

The difference between those versions determines tone, trust, clarity, and long-term influence.

❌This series was never about staying at the top of the curve.
It was about increasing awareness of movement.

Because leadership maturity is not measured by how rarely you react.

↪️It is measured by how consciously you return.

The conversation doesn’t end here. It deepens!!
