Temasek Steps Up Commitment in Europe with Opening of Paris Office

I hate Fridays because my GF always begs me to stop hustling so hard & to not be 3 hours late for dinner with her parents again.

It’s like Babe, I love you, but these posts about the importance of VC portfolio construction aren’t going to write themselves (100% of my investments are pre-revenue AI startups).

No one told me that the hardest part about investing in startups would be finding people that grind as hard as you.

Anyway, time to get back to work. I still have to book the 8 week long off sites Jabroni Capital has planned this summer.

Many people ask me why I like to Chair and Moderate big LIVE events?  When indeed public speaking is up there for many with fear of dying.

I particularly like LIVE events, the bigger the better - yes you have a plan, an agenda but at any point something can come from left field. A technical issue, a speaker goes way 'off piste'.  

I remember at one event in Monaco I had panelists wanted to fight each other such was their polarising views.  In 2018 San Jose tech event with 8000 people I had someone from the crowd try to get on stage to attack a speaker. In Frankfurt a speakers failed to show - so I had to cover a Q&A with the audience for 45 minutes on Deep Tech which turned out to be fun, and the organiser put it on the next agenda. 

#ADFO - Abu Dhabi Family Office Summits in many ways are a reflection of what is happening in the world around us and so it's far easier to get your head around the conversations. The cocktail of Geopolitics, Economic Uncertainty, Healthcare, Wars, Currency, impact of AI and other Deep Tech, Allocation of Capital, Philanthropy and 'Social Good' is a heady mix, albeit a delicate path to tread at times. 

Worth remembering #FamilyOffices #UHNW Investors, Family Holding Groups, #SovereignFunds are well informed. They are the experts. Have better macro and micro data, have a draw full of experiences, and #investment examples. There is a need to have current knowledge of world affairs, capital markets and technology impacts, and do a lot of preparation, talk to the speakers ahead of time and find out how they tick, all 36 of them. 

For many speakers it might be their first time, become nervous and dry up or forget the question. Or their answer becomes a rant or political statement - time for the Chair to step in. 

After all, the Audience want to hear what prominent and successful people have to say, take away the nuggets, the insights and yes be entertained. And why I prefer a Conversational style with speakers. This help maintain the energy in the room, at times going in interesting directions which can mean 'freestyle it'.

Two days ago, I had the opportunity of being a mentor at INNOVIT - Italian Innovation and Culture Hub in San Francisco 🌉.

I remember Years ago when during Techstars, our startup journey was catalyzed by the insights gained in our "mentor madness" week, where we engaged with over 70 mentors. That experience underscored a crucial lesson: while it's vital to absorb diverse perspectives, the true power lies in staying true to your beliefs and aligning with those who resonate deeply with your vision. 

At #INNOVIT, it was great to see teams like Oversonic, building more than humanoid robots, but industry-certified systems designed to work in harsh environments, relieving people from many dangerous situations. It’s remarkable to witness such groundbreaking advancements already in action! 🤖

A special shoutout to Stefano Toxiri and Mauro Odorico from Proteso for letting me experience their cutting-edge exoskeleton technology firsthand. Integrating their tech felt like augmenting my own capabilities, truly an awesome experience! 🚀

Founder: "We are raising pre-seed at a $32million valuation"

Me: "How did you arrive at that?"

Founder: "I paid a consultant who valued the startup"

True story, this was from a founder I worked with last year. I did my best to let them know any expert valuation is BS but they felt I was the one chatting BS

This is one of those things I wish I knew before I started, that valuation and ability to raise is 99% pedigree and 1% everything else

1️⃣  Exhibit A: A founder raised over $100m at a 1 billion valuation for an 8-month old startup. Anyone can do this if you're Bret Taylor:

❇  Google Maps co-creator
❇ ex-CTO of Facebook 
❇ ex-chairman of Twitter
❇ ex-co-CEO of Salesforce (
❇ Current chairman of OpenAI 

2️⃣  Exhibit B: YC founders are often able to go from not being able to raise to commanding $10m valuations in just a few months with not much changing but the stamp of authority

And then there's everyone else with great traction but will struggle to raise $200k

So the point is this, if you're fundraising, don't be carried away by what you hear in the press. You just don't know the intricate details of why some founders are able to raise. It's not a meritocratic field.
