There is only one question a board wants answered from the sales and marketing leaders: "What are you going to do to generate and close the right business to meet growth expectations?”

And I've failed at understanding that more than I care to admit. And it's board meeting week, so I thought I'd write my thoughts down, and share with you my approach to preparing for the meetings.

Why? Because board meetings are stressful, and marketers tend to over-polish, and then get SKEWERED. 

I've been there. 

Two lessons that have changed everything for me: 
👉 “Share before ready.” (Max Yoder, former CEO at Lessonly)
 👉 “Red team your story.” (Andrew Lau, CEO at Jellyfish)

Now I use those two ideas (mainly depends on the situation) to prep every board deck. Let's BREAK IT DOWN: 

 >> Outline the story first — no slides, just the 6–8 headlines I want repeated back to me.
 >> Get early directional feedback from the CEO.
 >> Red team it (twice): small group, hard questions, no design talk until the logic holds up.

Only then do I build the pretty deck.

The goal is to tell a great story; it should never be about a pretty presentation. You must show you understand the levers, tradeoffs, and proof behind your decisions.
