At Straight Up Search, I lead a bespoke, full-service SEO agency committed to driving organic growth and enhancing online visibility for small to medium-sized businesses across the globe. When your organic traffic drops 90%, it’s not an algorithm. It’s an attack

Most traffic drops come from content decay, bad architecture, or weak links. Sometimes you open Search Console and realise you’re looking at something far worse.

Last week I audited a site that crashed from 170 clicks a day to 20. The cause wasn’t ranking loss. It wasn’t competition. It wasn’t seasonality.
It was a full security breach, sitting in plain sight.

Google flagged harmful content. Chinese cloaking injected into branded search. Massive spikes in crawl requests. Black-hat backlinks hitting the domain at volume. Malicious queries inside the CMS. Phishing warnings on login pages.

You don’t see this often, and most business owners don’t know how to diagnose it.

The playbook I used:
- Check branded queries. Cloaking revealed immediately.
- Review GSC security issues, manual actions, and crawl stats.
- Compare historic ranking buckets. Positions collapsed from 529 top-3 keywords to around 50.
- Inspect new referring domains. Volume spiked with pure black-hat junk.
- Confirm CMS compromise. Hundreds of bot-driven search terms inside the backend.
- Verify CMS version. Two years out of date.
This wasn’t a dip. It was a hostile takeover of the site.

Fixing issues like this needs three tracks:
 • Security clean-up by a specialist dev
 • Full disavow and link hygiene sprint
 • Platform assessment, because Magento with no updates is a magnet for this stuff

I’ve seen clients cut 90 percent of their dev spend by moving to Shopify. I’ve also recovered hacked domains and taken them back to growth in under twelve weeks with a clean rebuild and a structured SEO reset.

If your traffic has fallen off a cliff and nothing “looks wrong”, check your security signals. Your SEO might not be the problem. Your platform might be wide open.
