Some of the most important relationships I’ve built started on nights I was exhausted, annoyed, and two seconds away from canceling. 

But every time I force myself to go anyway, I never regretted it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about events lately. 

Not the hype or the content, but the actual ROI.

Because let’s be real:
Events can be expensive. They break your routine, and often times initially you walk out wondering if it was worth it.

And yet… I keep going.
And going.

Just this year, I’ve hit SXSW, CES, Money20/20, Blueprint: The Future of Real Estate, Israel Tech Week, POSSIBLE, and a few more across Israel and the U.S.

And that does not include all the local happy hours, meetups, dinners, etc. (writing this makes it sound exhausting).

Some were incredible. 

Some were fun, but not 100% the best use of time. 

But I uniformly enjoyed the experiences, and all of them taught me something.

Here’s the honest truth about why I go, and why I think events still matter:

1. You need to get out of the house.
There’s a reset that happens when you’re around people you actually like. Being around “good people” always energizes a part of you that Zoom never will.

2. You always meet someone new.
Not every conversation turns into a client, but every event widens your surface area for luck. And you meet people you wouldn’t meet otherwise.

3. Events are content engines.
If you’re thoughtful, you can walk out with 2–3 weeks of material: insights, conversations, profile posts, short videos, and hooks that end up outperforming your normal content.

4. You leave with new ideas.
Even if the sessions are mid, the serendipity never is. So many of the actually good ideas I’ve executed against came from a brief conversation in a conference hallway or at a happy hour. 

So is the ROI unpredictable?
Yes.

Will the “value of events” conversation ever go away?
Probably not.

But if you’re intentional, (and not passive, waiting for people to come up to you), events can energize you, expand your network, and give you fuel to create.

That I believe is worth it.

What conference are you heading to next?

Money20/20 it’s a wrap… a few days of fintech, security, AI (and a surprising amount of crypto). 

And despite all the buzz, a few ideas stood out.

I’ll be honest in that I don’t know enough to say what’s revolutionary and what’s not (as I am still learning about fintech). But I do know when something feels real versus just hype. 

At this year’s Money20/20 there were more content creators, more people documenting what’s happening, and more content being captured and shared. Like in previous years, the podcast stage Money Pot was a brilliant move. 

URL + IRL, it’s not just about what’s happening at the conference, it’s about documenting the experience to share widely on social. 

There was A LOT going on, but three themes stood out to me this year:

1. Lending is still the backbone.
It’s not flashy, and doesn’t get the same buzz as AI or crypto. But the most stable, sustainable businesses I heard about were the ones built around lending. When everything else is changing, lending remains a big driver in fintech.

2. IRL + URL marketing is becoming a new go-to-market.
There were smart, scrappy activations everywhere. People thinking creatively about global distribution, how to take a real-world presence and build digital reach from it. I had a few ideas myself watching this happen…  it’s exactly the kind of energy that reminds me how much business development comes down to actually showing up, both physically and online.

3. AI = excitement + fear
Deepfakes have become the new fraud vector, and suddenly every other booth is about verification, detection, authentication. It’s not about who’s got the flashiest AI model, it’s about who can verify what’s authentic. Identity, transactions, content, everything now comes down to trust.

Underneath all the buzzwords, fintech still feels like layers upon layers of complexity, payments, risk, security, trust, and every new layer adds both opportunity and friction. 

I like Money20/20, the energy, and the focused people I met. 

And hands down, the side events are some of the best, with the most interesting and relevant attendees.
