Start small and share

For years, I thought talking TO team
was enough to drive performance.
But one project changed my approach.

In 2018, working on a NEW project
to be driven by me and the team.

I was confident that we’ll HIT
this project out of the park.
Because it was a high-performing team
And all the previous projects were successful.

Within 2 weeks, the situation took a different route
-gloomy faces
-chins are down
-morale rock bottom

From topping the podium to wooden spoon
was a bitter pill to swallow.

A powerful speech at this time will mean nothing.
And a motivational quote will demotivate you.

This needed a different approach.
So I took each team member aside
And talked WITH them.

Asked 2 simple questions:
How’re you feeling?
How can I support you?

The inputs from these conversations
Gave insights to change the direction.

It started with a small shift of focus on Empathy.

The result?
-happy feet
-smile on the faces
-a successful project

Most leaders feel that being authoritative
means you’re in control.
But this mindset means you don’t 
want the team to grow.

When I started my leadership journey
I’ve seen people who wanted to
Control. Command. Criticize.

It looked good on paper
but it created a friction.

Outwardly respectful.
Inwardly resentful.

Even though I know this 
leadership style isn’t good.

Somehow, it showed
in some way or the other.

My goal was to become a
better leader.

So, during my 1-1s I would
take feedback on my leadership.

Then, I realised that team wanted to be
Heard. Supported. Respected.

This small shift made massive impact
on my leadership.

The result?
Engagement grew
Collaboration increased
Smiling and happy team

Most of the times we think
problems are external.

But if you were to look inside
the problems are within.

Let go off the style that you dislike.
And embrace the one you love.

Now, leadership doesn’t sound mounting
It’s becoming your nature.
