Superconductors are special materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance when cooled below a certain temperature. 

This means no energy is lost as heat, unlike normal wires.

💡 High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS): These materials work at relatively higher temperatures (around –140 °C). 

They are not “room temperature,” but easier to cool compared to older superconductors.

One startup, Hinetics  is pioneering a breakthrough in this field. 

Instead of using complex cryogenic cooling systems (pumps, pipes, seals, fluid circulation), they have designed a spinning cryocooler.

👉 Cryocooler = A compact refrigeration device that keeps superconductors cold.

👉 Conduction cooling = Heat is transferred directly through solid materials (like copper) instead of circulating fluids.

👉 Power-to-weight ratio = How much power a motor produces relative to its weight. 

Higher ratios mean lighter, more powerful motors – critical for aircraft.

Hinetics’ prototype superconducting motor operates at 5–10 megawatts. 

That’s enough power to fly a regional passenger airliner. 

Even more exciting, their motor achieves up to 99.5% efficiency and a specific power of 10 kW/kg. 

Future versions may reach 40 kW/kg, making them among the lightest and most powerful motors in the world. 🚀

Earlier this year, YASA stunned the industry with an axial flux electric motor weighing only 13.1 kg (29 lb). ⚙️

 It delivered a remarkable 550 kW (738 hp) output, achieving an energy density of 42 kW/kg. ⚡

UK-based YASA has redefined electric motor innovation.

Their latest axial flux motor delivers 750 kW (1018 HP) while weighing just 12.7 kg. 

That’s a record energy density of 59 kW/kg — a benchmark in electric propulsion. 💪

🧲 But what exactly is an axial flux motor? 🤔

In simple terms, it’s an electric motor where the magnetic flux flows parallel to the rotation axis. ⚡

This is different from radial flux motors, where the flux flows outward from the center. 🔄

🔍 Why does this matter?

Because torque (rotational force) increases faster with diameter in axial flux designs. 

More diameter = more torque = more efficiency.

Let’s break it down 👇

⚙️ Pros of Axial Flux Motors:

1️⃣ High Torque Density: Produces more torque for the same size.
2️⃣ Light & Compact: Up to 70% lighter than radial motors.
3️⃣ Efficient Cooling: Flat geometry improves heat dissipation.

1️⃣ Complex Manufacturing: Tight tolerances make scaling harder.

YASA’s breakthrough lies in its Yokeless and Segmented Armature (YASA) design — removing the heavy stator yoke reduces iron mass by 80%, boosting range by up to 10%. 🔋

The rotor spins alongside the stator, not inside it, increasing radius and therefore torque. 

That’s pure physics — Torque = Force × Radius. 🧠

And here’s the exciting part — YASA’s motors use no exotic materials.

So every gram, watt, and degree of efficiency matters.

🧠 Let’s understand a breakthrough that’s reshaping motor design —

 The Axial-Flux Motor with a PCB Stator.

🔍 What’s inside a motor?

Every motor has two key parts:

Rotor: the part that spins.

Stator: the fixed part that produces the magnetic field.

Traditional stators are made of iron, which is heavy and limits efficiency.

In fact, iron makes up about two-thirds of motor weight!

Now imagine replacing that iron with a Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

A PCB is a thin, layered board with copper traces — commonly used in electronics.

Here, it replaces the iron stator with a lightweight, efficient, and compact alternative.

🌀 Axial-Flux Motor — A smarter design

In an axial-flux motor, the rotor and stator are flat and parallel —
like two disks facing each other.

This design allows higher torque density (more torque per volume)
and better cooling due to its thin profile.

Add a PCB stator, and you get:
 ✅ 50–65% lighter weight
 ✅ 25% lower carbon emissions
 ✅ Half the size and noise of conventional motors

💡 Why it matters

The air-core design (no iron core) reduces energy losses.

In a normal motor, iron causes eddy current losses — unwanted heating and vibration.

The PCB motor avoids this, giving smoother torque and less noise (about 5 dB lower).

It also allows two rotors on each side of the stator, creating a strong and consistent magnetic flux — the invisible field that actually spins the motor.

🧩 Smarter electronics inside

Each PCB layer carries one electrical phase. (A phase is a timed sinusoidal current wave used to create rotation.)

This prevents short circuits and improves reliability.

A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) — made with high-efficiency silicon carbide MOSFETs — controls motor speed and torque precisely.

It even allows cloud monitoring and software updates 🌐.

🌍 Real-world applications

As an engineer, I’m excited to see Ferrari embrace electrification.

Just watched Rahul Gandhi 🎓 in Columbia talk on cars 🚗, bikes 🏍️ and EVs transition ⚡. 

Rahul Gandhi talks about vehicle weight in the video. 

A bike of 100 kg can carry two people easily. 

A car of 3000 kg needs strong protection because of the engine’s crash risks. 

He adds that electric motors spread power across wheels, allowing lighter and safer designs without one big central engine.

EV growth is exciting, but let’s fix this. Battery swapping must work in all weather. 🔋🔌

Recently while travelling in Delhi, I saw something amazing.

A battery swapping station in Paschim Vihar! ⚡

Next to it, an EV car charger and Ather station.

It reminded me of China in 2018.
I felt proud to see this progress here in India 🇮🇳. 

But then, it rained heavily that night. ☔

Next morning, the swapping station was broken. 🔋
It was not working at all.
Error “Water detected” popping on the screen. 

This is a big issue for EV users.
🎯 What if someone urgently needed to swap?
🎯 What if any safety issue while someone charges in this condition?

These systems are outdoors all the time.
They face dust, rain, and tough weather.
They must be designed for IP67 protection.

Rain and dust can damage the electronics badly.

We need to make these systems reliable.

Three ways to improve water protection:
 1. Use IP67-rated enclosures and connectors.
 2. Raise the height of the base installation.
 3. Regularly inspect and seal weak joints.

The future takes flight: #MedhanshTrivedi’s groundbreaking human-carrying drone.

At just 17 years old, Medhansh Trivedi has achieved what even seasoned #engineers might find daunting—designing and building a single-seater, human-carrying #drone in just three months. Named MLDT 01, the drone can lift up to 80 kg and cruise at 60 kmph. This innovation is not just an impressive #feat of engineering but also a glimpse into India’s potential to revolutionise #aerialmobility.

A vision inspired by China’s drone revolution

Medhansh, a Class 12 student at the Scindia School in Gwalior, was fascinated by China’s advancements in #dronetechnology. This curiosity soon turned into an ambition when he decided to create a #prototype of his own.

“I got the inspiration to make this drone after seeing the drones in China. My teacher Manoj Mishra has helped me a lot technically, along with motivating me to develop the drone,” Medhansh said in a statement issued from his school.

Costing just ₹3.5 lakh, MLDT 01 is a 45-horsepower drone that can remain airborne for six minutes. Though currently limited to flying at 10 meters for safety reasons, its four motors, similar to those used in agricultural drones, give it the potential for more advanced applications. #Medhansh is determined to upgrade it into a hybrid model in the future, expanding its uses to #agriculture, goods #transportation, and even #humanmobility.

I had an exciting moment today!

At an HP fuel station, I saw an EV charging point.

This shows how fast India is shifting to electric mobility.

👉 EV adoption means more people are buying and using electric vehicles instead of petrol or diesel ones. 

Adoption depends on many factors, but charging infrastructure is the most important.

🔌 Charging infrastructure is the network of public and private charging points that supply electricity to EVs. 

Without enough chargers, users face “range anxiety” — the fear of running out of power before finding a charging station.

That is why adding chargers at fuel stations is a big step. Fuel companies like Shell and HP now see EVs as the future. 

They are adapting their business model to stay relevant.

📈 India’s EV market is growing fast:
 
Tata, Mahindra, MG lead in electric cars.

Demand for electric two-wheelers is rising.

More automakers are entering this space.

To make EVs mainstream, we need:
✅ More public chargers in cities and highways
✅ Chargers in rural areas for wider access
✅ Standardized sockets so all EVs can use the same charger
✅ Stronger partnerships between government and private players

⚡ Standardization means creating one common design or rule that everyone follows. 

For EVs, this ensures compatibility and avoids confusion.

The faster we grow charging networks, the sooner EVs will replace traditional vehicles. 

A few years ago, EVs were rare. Today, they are visible everywhere. 

This is just the beginning of a huge transformation. 🚀

137 days of 10,000 steps, 10 km every weekend, and 8.2 kg lighter in one year. 

🎯 My walking routine started casually a year ago, but now it’s a inseparable addiction for good.
