Amazon's third-party sellers are changing the game.

Twenty-five years ago, Amazon started its third-party marketplace. It was one of many experiments to grow its product selection. The goal was to become the "Everything Store."

Ten years later, third-party sales were less than one-third of all units sold. Now, they are close to two-thirds. This growth is impressive. Between 2013 and 2016, the share of third-party units grew by one percentage point each quarter for eleven straight quarters.

According to Amazon's latest earnings report, third-party services brought in $156.1 billion in 2024. This is 24.48% of Amazon's total revenue. The growing advertising business, which reached $56.2 billion in 2024, adds to this. These two revenue streams are now the core of Amazon's e-commerce flywheel. First-party retail is losing its importance.

Amazon's third-party growth is driven by strategy. The company is ending vendor agreements with many businesses. This pushes them toward the third-party marketplace model.

Life isn't always "up and to the right"

Social media feeds a sense that others must have it more together than we do. It seems like others are always being promoted, going on a great vacation, or celebrating an accomplishment.

The reason is a central tendency we all share. We talk freely about the things going well and we do not broadcast the challenges we face.

It has been a challenging beginning to the year for Simple Modern. The tariffs that have been announced over the past 45 days will have a cumulative cost of almost twenty million dollars to our company. For me, it has been very challenging to navigate how to lead in such uncertain times.

But I am hopeful. Here's why

Our capacity for growth accelerates during periods of intense challenge. We are able to more clearly see areas for potential and needed change. It helps us to do the important but difficult things we might avoid in easier times.

It also helps us to become more sympathetic. I was recently struck by the difference between sympathy and empathy. Empathy is the ability to imagine what someone is going through and express support. Sympathy is the ability to emotionally support others because you have personally experienced something similar.

Life is not always "up and to the right" and that is a good thing. We would never grow into the people we were created to become without failure and challenge. We would never develop the capacity for love and support that only come from enduring hardship. We would never be capable of leading others through the challenges that life throws our way.

Where are you experiencing adversity right now? Instead of viewing it as a curse, reframe it as an opportunity. A chance to unlock a better version of yourself.
