95% of the accomplishment statements I see on resumes miss this crucial step. Without it, your resume will not engage the reader.

The accomplishment statements miss adding the outcome or result. If you just write what you did on a job, you’re writing a “job description” – not a “resume.”
Here is how to bring out the critical details:

When writing out your accomplishment statements, cover the “Situation – Action – Results”

Here’s how –

✔ Situation: Our territory had been facing declining sales for 5-years previously. I was promoted to take it over.

✔ Action: I trained our sales staff and added a CRM so we could track our sales activity. I also conducted ride-alongs to coach and mentor sales staff, and rebuilt relationships with troubled accounts.

✔ Result: Over the following year, our sales grew 50 in our territory, from $2M to $3M.

Putting it all together: (Results FIRST):

✪ Increased territory sales 50%, from $2M to $3M, by coaching and training sales staff, implementing CRM system, and rebuilding relationships with troubled accounts.

Sometimes the “result” is hard to determine: to get at this, ask yourself “So what?” – I took this action, so what did my action do for the organization?

Results can take many forms including:

✪ Saving money
✪ Making money
✪ Making processes more efficient
✪ Helping staff members to grow
✪ Improving something
✪ Making clients happy
✪ Making the world a better place

What else?

Pro Tip – After you write your accomplishments, go back to each of them and ask yourself – how did I shine in this situation? What superpowers did I use? Your answers may help you uncover your “brand” or your strengths that should be highlighted in the executive summary.

What are the best fonts and margins to use on my resume? Does it really matter?

▶️ YES – font and margins both matter when writing a resume.

Both size and style help determine readability. Since the reader is viewing the resume at most for 6 seconds on the first glance, you want a font that grabs the reader’s attention quickly, and is pleasing. Plus, margins make is easy to read online and on paper.

▶️ Best fonts to use:

Use sans serif (no extra extending features) fonts. These types of fonts help when reading online.

Calibri – clear presentation and easily read at smaller point sizes.

Others – Helvetica, Tahoma, Arial, Garmond

▶️ Fonts to avoid:

Times New Roman – dates clients

Comic Sans – non-executive message

▶️ Font size:

Ideally I go for 11pt, if need be I go to 10.5 pt. If I must I go to 10, but I try to avoid that as it is harder to read.

▶️ Margins:

On MS Word I normally go for moderate margins (.75”) on left and right, and .5” on top and bottom. On occasion, if I have leftover space I increase the bottom/sides to 1”, or if I need extra space I can take the sides to .5” – don’t ever go beneath .5” on top or sides.

What's your go-to font?

#truestory – Most outdated resumes I get from executive clients are titled “Objective” or “Summary” – what’s the modern way? And how do I make the title/headline sizzle?

You only have 4-6 seconds to entice the reader to continue reading your resume. If the reader can’t figure out who you are or what position you’re seeking, they are likely to throw your resume away.

Instead, use the headline to convey who you are and what you’re looking to do next:

✔️ Outline your career target. A recruiter/hiring manager should be able to glance at your title and determine if you’re a fit for the position they are trying to fill. You’ve lost them if they have to look down in your experience section to figure this out.

✔️ Use a focused title/headline if you’re looking for a single, specific job – like “VP/Director of Operations” or “VP/Director of Sales.”

✔️ Use a bit broader title if you want to pursue a few closely related jobs like “VP/Director Operations – Supply Chain” or “VP/Director Sales – Territory Manager.”

✔️ Use the line below the title to add relevant keywords that showcase talents.

✔️ Use a related branding statement to share in a sentence what makes you stand out.

#truth – The first glance your resume gets will probably be 10 seconds. Let’s talk about how to allow your resume to be skimmed more easily.

✓ Add adequate spacing between accomplishments. When I have the room, I allow 6 pts between; if pressed for space, 3 pts.

✓ Front-load accomplishments. Start out the phrase with the result and then share how you accomplished this. For example, “Reduced costs 20% by automating XYZ.” Or, “Increased sales 20% by XYZ.”

✓ BOLD just the result and leave the rest of the accomplishment unbolded, so your result can be easily seen when skimming.

✓ In the education section, bold just the degree. If you went to a prominent school, add in bolding of the school you attended, and consider moving education up earlier in the resume for an ivy league or prestigious school.

I hate to break it to you - but the first glance at your resume will be 6-10 seconds. Here's how to capture the reader's attention:

7 ways to write a resume that captures the reader’s attention:

1. TARGET: Clearly define your job target in the “headline” – don’t say Sales Leader or (even worse) Summary. Be specific – for example, “VP of Sales” so they know what job you’re after.

2. BRAND: Write a compelling branding statement – don’t put a text heavy paragraph on top. The branding statement is one sentence long and captures the essence of your brand.

3. HIGHLIGHTS: Include 2-3 bulleted statements below the branding statement that highlight a combination of your best accomplishments and strongest skill sets.

4. SPACING: Add in spacing to make the resume easy to read.

5. ACHIEVEMENTS: Frontload and bold achievements in your accomplishment bullets.

6. PROMINENT INFO: Move prominent awards and education to the front page.

7. REMOVE BULK: Remove the “bulk” – don’t cram too much info onto the resume. It’s easier to read if you don’t try to say too much.

►  Update your LinkedIn profile.

90% of recruiters will check you out here before deciding to pick up the phone. Make sure all fields are up to date, keyword-rich, and that you have a current and professionally-created photo. You may also want to turn on the "open to work" feature to let recruiters know you are casully browing for jobs.

► Set up job alerts on #LinkedIn

To make sure you don't miss any posted jobs, set up a job alert to remain aware of new openings.

► Notify key members of your network that you are looking.

Because you have a good job, you want to fly under the radar and only reach out to trusted members of your network. Ensure these are key people who have a big network, or know important people at the places where you want to apply.

►  Make your current job the best it can be.

If you've heard the phrase "The grass is greener where you water it" - you'll know that perhaps you should also try to improve your current job and working conditions. Ask for a raise, request to work on a high-level project, repair any strained relationships, and suggest new programs and ideas that will help make your current workplace a better fit.

And remember - it's often easier to find a job when you have a job.

My client came to me with a six-page resume – too long if it’s not a CV for a doctor or professor. Here are some ways I pare long resumes back to 2-3 pages (preferably two):

1.      Only cover the past 10-15 years with greater detail. Before that either leave it off or cover job role and company.

2.      Focus on highlights and only keep relevant information. In football terms, a resume is the highlight reel, not the whole football game.

3.      For accomplishments, share the quantified achievement and briefly what you did, in 1-2 lines. You can expound on the story in an interview.

4.      For the job overview, cover the main responsibilities in as few words as possible. You don’t need to list everything in great detail.
