I asked a manager how to be a senior engineer and he asked me if I ever watched Naruto.

"You know the show where the kid is really lonely in the beginning?"

Sounded like me and a lot of other software engineers but I wanted to hear the rest of his thoughts.

Naruto starts his journey on a team with people he doesn't even get along with.

But he gets close to them and eventually learns how to work together.

Then he meets other teams from the same village. 

They're not competitors but it takes him time to learn how to work together with them too.

By the end of the show Naruto goes from the world's loneliest child to being supported by the ENTIRE village.

I asked my manager what that had to do with senior engineers?

"You become a senior engineer by getting people to support you."

Not by being on your own.
But by working with everyone else.

One of my biggest regrets is not exploring more topics in computer science.

I graduated college only knowing Java to find a job.

If I could go back, I'd take a class to study these topics:

1. Front-end development. It can get creative and fun seeing colors actually change on your screen.

2. Mobile development. Everyone has a phone nowadays so there's always a need for iOS and Android engineers.

3. Machine learning and Gen AI. It's a hard topic to learn but it's becoming more useful everyday.

4. Data engineering. There's always going to be more data in the world and someone who wants to understand it.

5. Backend development. Everyone should have a foundation on how to interact with a server to get something from a database.

Most people tell me to start general then specialize.

But people who love computer science generally keep exploring.
