My Mother spent her final decade on Earth 'making do'. She raised me on her own...a single Mom at 38. When it came time to think about retirement, her answer was always the same: "I won't live that long", she would always tell me. (and it always hurt to hear her say it) As it turns out, she DID live that long...a full 10 years longer than she thought. And she wasn't financially prepared for it. All she had during that last decade she lived was her social security income. And it wasn't enough to support her in retirement. She spent the last 10 years of her life living with family and friends. She "made do". So what did I do when I grew up? I became a Retirement Planner for Single Mothers.
