I've just reviewed an important paper on hydrogen’s role in China’s energy plans for oil and gas.

Here’s what stood out:
→ Hydrogen could replace natural gas in refineries to reduce CO₂ emissions
→ Underground hydrogen storage projects are growing, especially in Europe and China
→ Using hydrogen as fuel could cut emissions by up to 76% in heavy oil production
→ Blending hydrogen into gas pipelines might help lower transport costs
→ China’s natural hydrogen reservoirs are being explored as a potential energy source

Why does this matter? China’s top oil and gas players want to achieve net zero by 2060. Adding hydrogen to their mix could lower emissions without requiring major infrastructure changes.

The Belgian hydrogen strategy sounds promising.

Can it live up to its goals?

In my view, Belgium will only reach 30 of the 150 MW of electrolysis capacity by 2026. The strategy was regarded as one of the most promising in Europe, but many of the targets seem too ambitious (which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing).

Key points:

→ Belgium wants to cut greenhouse gases by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
→ The government is investing €395 million to develop a robust hydrogen market.
→ Belgium is set to import and transit renewable hydrogen, with a target of 350 TWh by 2050.
→ By 2026, Belgium plans to have 150 MW of electrolysis capacity.
→ A key focus is positioning Belgium as a renewable molecule gateway for Europe.

Belgium hydrogen strategy

I've looked into studies about Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysis. Here is why it's critical for green hydrogen production.

Here's what I found:

→ Uses solid polymer electrolyte to split water into H₂ and O₂.
→ Achieves efficiency above 80% with fast response times.
→ Produces ultra-pure hydrogen (>99.99%) - ideal for fuel cells.
→ Perfect match for fluctuating renewable energy sources.
→ Capital costs driven by platinum catalysts and membranes.
→ Cost reduction pathway: lower platinum content, scale up production.
→ TRL 7-8: near-commercial, with large-scale deployments underway.
→ Key players: ITM Power, NEL Hydrogen.
→ Projected hydrogen cost: below $2/kg by 2030 with continued innovation.

SOEC - high heat, high efficiency.

Solid oxide cells don't play by the same rules.

→ Works at 700-1000°C using ceramic electrolytes
→ Efficiency over 90% with integrated heat recovery
→ Runs on electricity and waste heat - less power needed
→ Output: hydrogen or syngas, depending on the setup
→ TRL 4-5 - still early, mostly demo projects for now
→ Not ideal for fluctuating power - works best with steady industrial heat
→ Capex? Very high - ceramics and build are expensive
→ Opex? Lower than PEM, thanks to reduced electricity demand

SOEC - Solid Electrolyte Electrolyzers 

AEL - the quiet workhorse of green hydrogen.

If you think all electrolysis is high-tech and high-cost, have a look at this:

→ AEL is TRL 9 - running in the field for decades
→ 60-70% efficiency - lower than PEM, but proven
→ Lifetime? Over 20 years with standard maintenance
→ Capital costs: among the lowest of all electrolysis types
→ Runs at atmospheric pressure - fewer risks, cheaper gear
→ Best fit for steady or slow-changing renewables like solar
→ Thyssenkrupp, NEL, Iberdrola - all in the AEL camp
→ Hydrogen purity might need a final cleanup - depends on use
