Bitcoin ATMs That Fit in a Backpack? El Salvador Just Changed the Game


Remember I told you I went to record a Startup reality show in El Salvador couple months ago? Buckle up because the first XFounders Accelerator Stories episode is live. 

I'm worked alongside Edgar Borja from K1 Technology to support on their positioning, pitch and messaging to help show the world that how crypto adoption comes from actual value no ponzinomics.

Here's the story behind K1:

Edgar puts $10 into a Bitcoin ATM in El Salvador. 
Ten minutes later, he gets $7.

Most founders would tweet about "UX challenges" and move on.

Edgar said: "Hold my pupusa, we're building the easiest way to buy Bitcoin in the world."

Then he actually did it.

A lot crypto founders I met are on pivot number three by now.


2021 –> NFT marketplace.
2022 –> DeFi yield farm.
2023/24 –> AI agent something-something? 

This year many are larping as stable coin or prediction market genius.

And here's the f*cked up part, our industry literally rewards this behaviour.

New narrative drops → capital stampedes in → founders pivot faster than you can say "ponzinomics" → hype evaporates → rinse, repeat.

Listen, there is nothing wrong with "pivoting" I get it, it's absolutely essential for business to keep alive and for PMF to be found, but it's getting ridiculous.


It used to be: Three years to build something real.

Now: If you are lucky the narrative survives 6 months before it's dead.


You can't build actual infrastructure in 6 months.
You definitely can't find product-market fit.

But stay focused on last cycle's story?
Congratulations, you're now dead money.

VCs stop returning texts.
Users vanish.
Your senior engineer already accepted an offer from whatever's trending on CT this week.

Crypto doesn't give a sh*t about finishing what you started.
It only cares that you're starting something new.

Maybe that's the real product in crypto?


The pivot itself.


Not the protocol, not the platform.

Just the endless performance of looking relevant.

But that's the industry death spiral.

Actual progress won't come from narrative musical chairs.
It comes from fixing problems that exist outside the CT timeline.

Building things people use when nobody's farming tokens.

The founders who dominate this industry aren't the ones optimizing for attention.
They are the ones creating something so legitimately useful it doesn't need a hype cycle to survive.

What about we all learn from them?

It's time to stop feeding the hype.
It's time to fix what's actually broken.

The most terrifying deepfake scam I have ever read did not involve a celebrity. 
It involved a father and his son. 


I read an article from Brazil a while ago that I still think about. 
A man got a call from someone who sounded exactly like his son. 

And by exactly he meant: “It was the same voice, same way of speaking and same breathing.” 

The scary part? His son called him saying he was being kidnapped. 

He begged for money, cried and pushed for urgency so his dad would react fast. 

But in the middle of the panic, his real son walked through the door. 


The scam?


The attackers cloned the phone. 
They pulled photos from social media to rebuild the face.
They scraped voice notes to recreate the voice.
They stitched everything together with AI tools anyone can access. 

This is becoming common in Brazil, and to my surprise, is growing fast in Europe now too. 

According to the Sumsub Identity Fraud Report 2025–2026, deepfakes in Europe rose between 200% and 500% in multiple countries. While fraud volume went down but AI adoption pushed quality way up. 

Here is what is actually happening: 

• Simple scams are fading
• Sophisticated identity engineering is rising
• Criminals use AI to create faces that pass liveness checks
• Voices that match human emotion
• Documents that look real even under scrutiny 

The report calls this the “Sophistication Shift.” With fewer attempts, scammers are getting much more damage when they work, because they feel absolutely real. 

And it is not just deepfakes, the report shows a 180% growth in complex fraud that combines synthetic identities, social engineering, and device tampering to bypass onboarding systems. 

If you are a tech leader and founder here’s what you need to understand. 
Fraud is not a volume game anymore, it is an engineering game. 

Your product needs to tell the difference between a real person and an AI reconstruction of that person, because both now look and sound the same.
