#Russia supplied 64.1% of #Germany's gas in May 2021. Today, that number is 0%. Despite Russia cutting its pipeline gas flows to Germany, gas storage is a cozy 91% in the middle of winter. 

How did they do it?

Engineers built Germany's first import terminal for liquified natural gas (LNG) in just 200 hundred days. They slashed through typical German red tape to make it happen.

What the Bank of Japan did today spoke volumes. Today they unexpectedly raised their cap on the yield of the 10-year Japanese government bond.

Yes! You heard it right. They have a cap.

The Bank of Japan is the Japanese government bond market. They own more than 50 per cent of it after decades of quantitative easing. And it seems they are looking for a way out of this position without spooking the other half of the market Lizz Truss-style.

Why do this just before Christmas? Because it's quiet. Nice and quiet. The perfect time to test a bit of convexity on their terms. I think it's pretty smart really. 

They seem to want an orderly, slow and boring exit. They want normalisation.

Well let's see. For now it looks like they are letting a bit of air out of the balloon and this is a pretty sharp market response. It feels like a Christmas pantomime.

BOJ: "We are not going to raise rates"
Mr Market: "Oh yes you are..."
BOJ: "Oh no we're not...

Yes I get it. Controlling the yield curve is tough, and this gives a bit of room to breathe. And look behind you Mr Market. Is that a global recession? False dawns are a Japanese market tradition.

It shows a solution to a very big #Cryptocurrency problem – mining!

#Ethereum, which is a cryptocurrency, has changed the way it operates. New coins are no longer mined. 

Mining is a process where complex computations are used to validate transactions for cryptocurrencies like #Bitcoin. These computations become more complex as competition to make them increases, requiring more energy and increasing carbon emissions.

This process is called proof-of-work (PoW). Ethereum has ditched this for something new call proof-of-stake (PoS). 

Here, transaction validators are chosen to create new blocks and validate transactions based on the number of tokens they hold, rather than their computational power. 

Subsequently, this system requires a lot less energy and is far more environmentally friendly.
