I've been selling for over 25 years and have held every role in Sales from making 400 dials a week to being the VP of Sales of a self funded start up that sold to Staples to now running my own sales training company working with organizations like Salesforce, Linkedin, Amazon, Google and many more of the fastest growing companies in the world.

Cold outbound should be looked at as more of a Marketing function than a direct Sales function at this point.

The days of cold calling/emailing someone at the perfect time with the perfect pitch and getting them to engage in a sales process for something that wasn't on their priority list are over.

I saw a stat the other day that said only about 3-5% of anyone's addressable market is actively in need of your solution.

That means about 95% of anyone's addressable market is anywhere from never wanting/needing our solutions to already having on in place to needing a better option but it not being a priority.

That's why I think every Sales rep needs to think of themselves as a mini-Marketer.  

Every "touch" point is an impression.  The goal is to leave as many positive impressions as you can so that they they do need your solution, you're the one they think of.

This is why personal brand and posting on Linkedin or other channels matters. 

This is also how you can justify making cold calls that have such a low connect rate these days.

Maybe that cold call led to that person looking at your email or visiting your website and then they decided to reach out to you the way they wanted to reach out to you.  

No singular outreach channel is "dead" or works better than the other.  We have to leverage them all to tell a story that educates our target audience and gets them to THINK.

Dear Buyers, 

It's ok to tell a Sales rep "No"

"No" is the second best answer in Sales

"Yes" is obviously the best

"No" is the second best

"Maybe" or no response is the worst

Do you think we like turning into stalkers and "touching base" or "checking in" all the time?

We feel just as stupid doing that as you get annoyed with us for doing it.

I've gotten to the point where I straight up say to the client at the end of the first call:  

"Can I ask a favor?  If it's pretty evident at some point throughout your buying process that we're not a good fit, are you ok with telling me no?"

I say it somewhat jokingly and always get a "yes, of course." 

The reason I do that is to let the client know that I am 100% ok with them telling me no.  

Also, later on, if they do ghost me, I can have some fun with it and say something like:

"remember when I asked if you were ok with telling me no? are we at that point of the relationship?" 

or send a 👻 emoji with a "?"

On the flip side:

Dear Sales Reps,

When a client says "No" please don't try to hard close them or go around them.  

Seek to understand.

I usually say something like:

"For my own personal and professional development, would you mind letting me know the real reason you decided to go with someone else?"

I usually only get about a 10-20% response on that one after losing a deal but the insight I get from that one response is usually worth more than the commission I would have made. 

Let's stop the games and level up together.

Do you have a kid or know a kid who is graduating High School and looking into colleges?

It's insane to me that we don't teach this type of stuff to kids in High School and then we ask them to make one of the most important decisions of their lives based on what they "think" they want to be when they grow up. 

I don't know about you but at 18 years old I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, nor did I have any clue about what professions were even available to me.

Most of us make our decision on colleges and majors based on "feelings" and not facts when it comes down to it.

I don't want to discourage anyone from following their passion but the financial impact of your decision for what college and major you want HAS to be part of the decision criteria.

Going into $200k worth of debt to get a $50k/year job that you might not even like is lunacy but yet it happens all the time.

We went through this equation with my wife's younger brother a while back who thought he wanted to go to Suffolk University here in Boston (because "it was a good school") to get his Psychology degree (because he didn't really know what else he would be interested in).

If you look at this example, based on the yearly cost of school, the loan he would have to take out with an average interest rate, and cost of living for MA he would have approximately $341/month left over to do ANYTHING else with after paying his core expenses and the loan back.  

By the way, that "yearly salary" in this example is after a masters degree, not just a 4 year bachelor's degree.

Needless to say, he decided to go to Salem State that was less than $10k/year and is now in  MUCH better financial situation than he would have been if he went to Suffolk.

This is why I think a career in Sales should be an option that kids consider after high school if they don't really know what they want to do or be when they grow up.

There is zero barrier to entry and Sales teaches you a lot about yourself and about business.  It gets you exposed to almost every other profession as well. 

If you go into Sales for a couple of years you'll make a few bucks and have a much better perspective on what you might want to do and then you can decide to go to college on your terms, not just because you're supposed to.

Don't get me wrong, I think college is a fantastic social education, but that social education shouldn't put you in debt for the rest of your life. 

If you don't want to go into Sales then go to a Community College for 2 years, figure out what you like and then transfer to a university that has the major you want.

I have imposter syndrome all....the....time.....

Do you?

I used to think it was a bad thing but now I understand that it's actually a good thing.

Why?

Because it means you're growing.

Every time you reach a new "level" in your life/career, you've never been there before so inherently you're going to feel like an imposter.

As soon as you start figuring it out then you get to the next level and feel like an imposter again.

If you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing.  

It's like going to the gym.

Have you ever gone to the gym and come home and nothing hurt?  

Was that a good day at the gym?  Nope.

On the other hand, have you ever come home from the gym and barely been able to walk up the stairs or lift your arms?

Was that a good day at the gym? Yup.

It means you stretched yourself and you're building muscles.  

Another thing that helps me deal with imposter syndrome is realizing that no one, and I mean NO ONE, has it all figured out or really knows what they're talking about. 

We're all just trying to figure it out along the way, some are just better at hiding it than others.

Keep growing.  Keep being an imposter. #MakeitHappen

I think everyone should be punched in the face (literally) at least once in the early years of their lives. 

I'm not kidding. Hear me out.

I've gotten the sh-t kicked out of me more than a few times when I was a kid.  Some of them I deserved, some of them I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The first time I got physically punched in the face my initial reaction was to cry.  

As I laid there on the ground I was hurt, embarrassed, scared and felt every type of negative emotions I could immediately after it happened.  

But about 5 seconds later something inside of me told me to get up and keep fighting even though it was me against 10 other guys.  

They kept hitting me and I kept getting getting up.  So much so that they eventually just gave up and walked away.

Everything hurt after that but it taught me a lot about myself.

Turning that to the world of business and my 28 years in Sales, I've been figuratively punched in the face hundreds of times.  

Every time I do, I remember what it felt like at the end of that fight and I'm able to get back up every....single.....time.....

As Vince Lombardi once said: 'It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.'

Get up! Keep fighting.

"Sounds good. Let us digest the information and we'll get back to you"

Have you ever heard that at the end of one of your demos?

If you've heard the word "digest" I almost guarantee you didn't close the deal. 

It is our job to help the client "digest" the information.

If they walk out of the conversation more confused than they were walking into it then we've done a terrible job. 

Yet so many of us drone through the entire presentation because we think it's all important.  

Let me be clear, NO ONE cares about our entire presentation or demo.

They ONLY care about the part that is most relevant to them.  

I wrote a post a while back called "sell to the 20%" which highlighted my belief that if you pick any product or service you own, I almost guarantee you use only about 20% of it. 

Think about it, your car, clothes, iPhone, Excel, Linkedin, etc.  

So, since most people only use 20% of what they buy, that's how I believe people buy.  

They only care about the 20% that is most relevant to them and can help them achieve their goals or solve their problems.  

Here's what we can do to help the client "digest" our information.

1) Start the presentation off with what you already know about them and look for confirmation or clarification 

2) Go around to each person and ask "what's the one thing you want to get out of today's presentation?" and write each priority down

3) Instead of going trough your first three slides that are all about you (company history, client list and awards) ask the client how much background info they need to hear about you before you get to the important stuff which is about them

4) As you go through the demo or presentation, skip through the "table steaks" stuff that all the other vendors have 

5) When you get to a component of your solution that someone said was their priority,  pull them back in by saying something like "Hey Sarah, you had said that X was our priority. This is the component of our solution that addresses that.  How does that compare to what you're doing now?"  This is a far better way of getting them engaged and understanding how they are receiving the information than asking the dumb/insulting question "does that make sense?"

6) Finish by summarizing each priority and aligning it with each component of your solution and seeing if there is anything you missed 

Here are a few more tips to maximize your chances of standing out in a presentation/demo:

💡 Send a "shared agenda" before the presentation to confirm and control it. Leave 2-3 bullet points blank and ask the customer to fill in the blanks with what they want to talk about.

💡 Use the Sandler "upfront contract" to set the stage for the close and make sure you leave at least 5-10 minutes at the end to discuss next steps.

💡 During the presentation, stop sharing your presentation and take down your slide when you want to make a point and get people engaged.

I got the chance to see them last night in Boston and they're still crushing it after over 30 years in the business. 

Do you know how hard it is to stay even somewhat relevant and still fill concert halls after 30 years?  

It's the same for Sales, Entrepreneurship and personal branding.

✅ Anyone can sell in a hot economy when money is free and there's a grow-at-all-cost mentality.  
❌ Can you sell in today's economy?  Do you have the grit to stay in this Sales game for your entire career and deal with ALL the ups and downs along the way? 

✅ Anyone can start a business on Amazon and make a few bucks in the short term or go off on their own and get a few clients from their immediate network.
❌ Can you build a business with a strong foundation that is sustainable long term and can withstand the fluctuations in the economy?  

✅ Anyone can catch a viral post on social and ride it for a while.
❌ Are you willing to put in the consistent work when you don't go viral and deal with no one liking or commenting on your posts for months on end? 

This is why I respect anyone in music, business, sales etc who's been in the game and is still fighting the good fight.

It's also why I'm such a huge fan of Simon Sinek's book "the Infinite Game."

Most people play the "finite game" where there is a winner and a loser, a beginning and and end.  

The "Infinite Game" is about staying in the game.  Your only REAL competition is yourself and whether or not you're willing to put in the effort to stay in it.  

Cypress has put in the effort.  

Their song "(Rock) Superstar" has always been on my "Confidence" playlist that I listen to when I'm trying to fight through all the ups and downs of Sales and Entrepreneurship.

Here are some of their lyrics that resonate more than most:

--But you don't know about the blood, sweat, and tears
- And losin' some of your peers
- And losin' some of yourself to the years past, gone by
- Hopefully it don't manifest for the wrong guy
- Egomaniac and the brainiac don't know how to act

and....

Linkedin IS NOT a direct selling platform.

I said that the other day on webinar and ruffled more than a few feathers.

Let me explain.  

I feel fortunate that I learned how to "network" face-to-face before Linkedin was a thing.

I used to belong to 3-5 in-person networking groups and went to 3-5 networking events every....single....week....for years. 

I got to meet people in person and watch their body language change when I would "pitch" them my services and could feel how uninterested they were in that moment. 

I got to see what happened when all I did was try and "get" without "giving" anything in return. 

I found out what it took to develop real, meaningful relationships that would lead to business and much more in the long run by not focusing on my own short term gain.  

So, when Linkedin first came out it came natural to me (I was member #36,541).

Over the years I've leveraged it to build my brand, network, learn, engage and more. 

Any time I've tried to "pitch slap" someone or directly "sell" them on the platform without building some try of rapport/relationship it has never worked. 

I get over 300 in-mails a week and have NEVER responded to a single pitch on Linkedin from someone I didn't know, had never engaged with, had never engaged with my content or wasn't someone I had gotten value from beforehand. 

Stop trying to "sell" on Linkedin.  

I know it's hard but try to play the long game.  

So many people don't post or build their own personal brand because they don't see any short term gain.  

I get it.  Much of Sales is about driving short term results. 

But, you also need to realize that if you want to stay in this industry and have success, you need to focus on the long term too.

Sharing content, building your brand, being curious, adding value, making connections, learning from others. That's what Linkedin should be about.   

As Simon Sinek would say - stop playing the "finite game" and start playing the "Infinite Game"

STOP NEGOTIATING WITH YOURSELF!!!

It’s amazing how often we negotiate with ourselves in Sales. 

We offer up things throughout the sales process without getting anything in return. 

We proactively give discounts because we’re so used to people asking for them and/or we’re not confident in the value our solution provides. 

When someone asks for the price we say things like: “It’s $10,000… BUT it really depends on how many and how long…” yadda, yadda, yadda. 

How do we know the client doesn’t think $10k is actually reasonable? Why give them an objection before there is one? 

Your reaction to a prospect’s question or objection usually is what dictates their response.

If you have kids you know exactly what I’m talking about. 

When a kid takes a digger they almost always look to the parent for their reaction before they react themselves. 

If the parent doesn’t make a big deal of it the kid usually brushes it off and is fine. If the parent freaks out the kid usually starts crying immediately.

One of my personal rules to success is “confidence overcomes most shortcomings except for an ego.”  

We need to be more confident in our solutions, our value, and ourselves. 

We need to stop negotiating or throwing out objections before there are any.

"Sales is the transfer of enthusiasm"

Someone told me that early in my career and I still believe it to this day.

The #1 thing I personally think that you need to be successful in Sales is a BELIEF in what you do.  

If you DO believe in what you do then it's about finding the people/companies who fit your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile) and transferring that enthusiasm to them.

People still buy based on emotion and back it up with facts.

If you DO NOT believe in what you do then you're just a jackass sales rep who gives the rest of us a bad name.

This also is what causes burnout.

I'm getting a lot of reps telling me their burnt out after only a few years in Sales and wondering how I've been in this game for 28+ years and still going.  (and yes, I still actively sell every...single...day)

You get burnt out when you don't believe in what you're selling and you're just in it for the paycheck.  

If you have passion for what you do and believe that what you're selling makes a real difference for the right client then you don't tend to get burnt out.  

I always have believed in every product or company I sold for.

If you're struggling with this right now here a few things you can do:

1) Read some case studies and go talk to some existing customers and ask them about the different you make for them, the impact your solution has on their business, how it allows them to serve their customer, etc. 

2) Talk to the founders of your company (I don't care how big your company is) and ask them why they started the business.

3) Go through the "core value" exercise to make sure you are crystal clear on your top 5 core values (prioritized) and make sure the company and leadership team you work for align with your core values.  If not, go find another company and leadership team that does.

Phone is dead!

At least that's what I thought when I started getting a bunch of AI bots calling me pretending to be human.  

I also stopped picking up unknown numbers all together because I was worried they were recording my voice to them use AI to make calls pretending its me. 

Seeing this news from the FCC (thanks for sharing it Richard Harris™) makes me feel A LOT better.  

"Cold calling" isn't dead.  We just need to look at it differently than we have before.

If you think you're going to call someone and convince them to take a look at your product that they don't have a pressing need for, change their existing priorities and enter into a sales cycle with you, you're going to get very frustrated very fast.

However, if you look at it as more of a Marketing function where each call/voicemail leaves an impression that then might lead the client take a look at your email, social profile or website and then eventually reach out to you the way they want to communicate then you can start to justify making the calls and leaving the voicemails.

Sales reps need to be mini-marketers right now.  Every "touch" is an impression point that gets the client more familiar with your brand so that when they do need what you have you are the one they respond to. 

That's why calling still matters.

The FCC has decided: Those realistic AI robocalls are illegal.

Have you ever recommended your competition?

Many hard core sales people I know want to beat the competition no matter what.

Unfortunately I fell into this trap earlier in my career too.

I started focusing way too much on selling AGAINST my competition versus selling TO my client.

Then I realized that my main competition was myself.

If I lose a deal, it's either because I wasn't the right fit or I need to get better (it's usually a combination of both).

However, I've gotten a lot better and knowing when I'm not the right fit.

I tend to qualify OUT more than I qualify IN these days because doing average or below average work for a client who is not a good fit really isn't an option any more, regardless of how much I might "need" the deal.

This is why I think it is so important to know your competition and where their strengths and weaknesses are as well as being honest about yours.  

When you find a client who needs something that isn't a strength of yours but is for one of your competitors I think it's important to say that and in some cases make the recommendation to go with them.

I was reminded about this after watching this episode of Shark Tank where  Damon competing against Lori for a deal. 

After the entrepreneur went out of the room to consult with his dad, Daymond asked Lori about her experience and expertise in this product category and she explained she had a ton of experience and success with it. 

When the entrepreneur came back in Daymond actually backed out of the deal and recommended Lori because she was the better fit.  

Sales isn't always about closing the deal and beating your competition.  It's about doing what's right for the customer.

There isn't a single successful person I know who hasn't worked their ass of to get to where they are.

Does anyone have a way to remove "attribution" of where a "lead" came from while maintaining a commission structure that will incentivize each group (Sales and Marketing) to do the activities we need them to do? 

I feel strongly that if we were able to remove attribution then we would be able to solve the age old Sales/Marketing divide. 

I tried something like this early in my career with my Sales team at my first company and it was highlighted in Inc Magazine with the title "Kill the Commissions" (we had a really good PR company).

I had created a form of the Predictable Revenue Model before it was really a thing.  

We had inside sales reps (SDRs) who made calls and sent emails to set up meetings for full cycle sales reps (AEs). 

Everyone got a base salary with a commission structure that was geared towards their main goals (meetings vs revenue), BUT the MAJORITY of their comp was based on a quarterly bonus.

If, as a TEAM, we hit the quarterly meeting number then EVERYONE got a bonus with the SDRs getting a heavier portion of it.

Also, if we hit the revenue target for the quarter then EVERYONE would get a bonus with the AEs getting the heavier portion. 

This fostered more teamwork and got AEs to go the extra mile to get that one or two extra meetings so everyone would hit the meeting bonus number and SDRs would help the AEs to do some admin work to help them close a deal to hit the revenue target.

My Marketing Manager was in on this comp plan too because they helped throughout the sales process.

It worked great but we were a small company and I could control that.  I'm not sure that scales though.

With that, does anyone have examples of comp plans where attribution doesn't matter so we can all just get along?

"The latest LinkedIn algorithm update gives comments slightly more weight in boosting reach. Longer comments (>15 words) are twice as effective as shorter ones. "As an author, adding another 2-4 comments after the initial first hour can effectively reintroduce your post into the feeds of all participants, typically resulting in an additional 25% growth," according to the Van der Blom report.

Posting helpful, quality comments on other people's posts also helps your profile by increasing profile views, followers, connections, and, therefore, people seeing/interacting with your own content. However, stay away from letting AI do the work for you, which nets a much lower response."

This is a Tony Robbins quote that Ian Koniak shared with me and my members during a workshop recently on Time Management.

Ian has been through a lot and has hit the preverbal "rock bottom" which forced him to make some hard decisions and significant changes to his life.

I was curious to hear from him whether he felt like people needed to hit rock bottom in order for them to change in a meaningful way.  

In many ways the answer is yes, but, Ian and I both believe that you can learn from the "mistakes" and "failures" of others which is why we both share all of ours.
