Businesses don’t buy cheap SEO because of the price.

They buy it because they don’t understand the damage it causes.

I don’t blame them because it’s like a trojan horse. 

Bad SEO doesn’t break your site on day one. 

You experience increases in traffic, rankings and sales for a few months.

Until it all comes crashing down!

Cheap SEO usually shows up later as:

SEO Is not expensive.

You're expectations are wrong.

Services like fiveer and cheap SEO have created this super unrealistic expectation that you can pay very little and get a lot out of it.

But, let's look at this in a logical way. 

Say some company wants to charge you $2k for SEO. 

That ends up being 24k a year. 

That may seem like a lot, but the average he average SEO specialist salary in the USA is around $67,000.

So no, SEO is not expensive, you've just been sold a lie like most of these freelance/ fiveer platforms.

They may be cheaper, but more often than not, you will have to pay twice or even triple more to fix that. 

Who's running into price issues with their clients where they want a deal?

In just 3 short years, LLMs blew up the 28 year old SEO industry:

The traditional buyer’s journey is dead.

People are no longer starting the customer journey on Google. 

They’re using things like Reddit, social media and LLMS to help research, inform and decide on what to purchase.

Many time’s bypassing google entirely for those TOFU type searches AIOs, AI mode and LLMS.

I’m going to lose clients saying this:

SEO will not work for every business.

If there is no search demand for your business, all the SEO in the world will not fix it.

I’ve personally turned away clients that wanted to pay me money because I felt like SEO would not help them.

If I do not feel like I can do a good job and help you make money, I won’t take you on.

It’s simple, but integrity is something most people in this industry don’t have. 

Another thing a lot of businesses do not consider is some of the websites they are going up against.

If you’re trying to go up against a Wayfair type site where they have a full dedicated SEO team and a crazy amount of authority, your budget of 2k a month won’t make a dent.  

In that case, you would likely benefit more from social media, paid ads and really just showing up where your audience is.

Have you personally turned away clients because you felt SEO was not right for them?

I asked ChatGPT for SEO advice:

It lied confidently.

I was trying to find the difference between the raw HTML and rendered HTML for links. 

At first, it said that footer links were not present in the raw HTML. 

When I then showed ChatGPT an image of the footer links in the view-source it basically said it was wrong.

Yet, some of your are now going all-in on AI and using it for every part of your SEO.

AI has largely taken the place of SEO tools. 

In that, many of the people using them never question if they’re accurate, or 

they just take things at face value and don’t use their brains.

Always validate findings for an audit or anything with other tools.

AI is good at a lot things, but remember it can still hallucinate and make things up.

For the time being, it looks like us SEOs still have a job… for now.

Has AI lied or made things up when you used it to help you out with your SEO tasks?

Google doesn’t care about your SEO score.

What they do care about:

✔️ Good content 

✔️ good backlinks 

✔️ good user experience

✔️ strong tech SEO

I personally have never sent a potential client or lead an SEO tool with a random score.

These tools do not tell you the full story of a website.

They’re just looking to check boxes.

Many of them also serve up false-positives.

An audit needs to focus on surfacing the issues, diagnosing how to fix them, prioritizing them and ultimately making sure the client implements the work. 

Automated reports are good for a surface view, but unless you have a “human” look over the site, you’re missing on the true benefits on an SEO audit. 

What’s another big misconception you’ve run into with SEO audits?

Most SEO audits I've looked over suck:

They focus on things that don't move the needle.

When you work with me, you get a full review of every part of your SEO (onpage, offpage, tech, etc) and focusing on things that will actually make you more money.

My process often starts doing a ScreamingFrog crawl to get a high-level overview of the what is going on the site.

I then go through each template type/ important thing.

I then breakdown each issue with what is going on and how to fix it.

Lastly, finish up with a review of their GSC. 

I then will breakdown to the client what's the most impactful part of each audit and tell them what to fix.

This audit was a beast and it took a little over 20 hours to complete.

I'm currently updating my template to have more things about EEAT and AI SEO.

I will then be selling the template on Gumroad, but that's a work in progress.

If your SEO person sends you anything other than a custom SEO audit, fire them.

How do you structure your SEO Audits?

Most SEOs on LinkedIn are fake.

I scored a 100/100 for authenticity with Favikon and didn’t sell out in the process to do it!

From day one my goal was to always share things others are not sharing and or approaching things from a different view point. 

Also, be as authentic and real as possible.

I’m not going to write or talk about things I haven’t done because I like to sleep at night. 

With the advent of AI, there’s way too much AI slop now on this platform and anyone can really create it with little effort. 

What’s going to separate you from every other person is your unique, lived experience.

I’m not the smartest or best SEO, but people appreciate it more than ever when someone is raw and real.

Google is not the source of truth for SEO information:

I learned this the hard way a few years into my SEO career!

I started seeing the advice they would give publicly would often not match up to what ends up ranking in the SERPs.

Also, many times they would blatantly lie including lying that they do not use user metrics, but they were using navboost. 

I still see SEOs worship Google like they can do no wrong, but Google has never cared about SEOs. 

The way I learn/ learned what actually works in SEO now is from hands on experience whether that's site's I have worked on, or freelance I have done over the years.

Don't get me wrong.

I think Google does a great job at any of the tech SEO advice they give out. 

But anything ranking wise, you're better off taking with a grain of salt and testing on your own.

SEOs, when did you realize this into your SEO journey?

An SEO audit is supposed to find real problems, not create fake ones.

If you see “text-to-code ratio,” you’ve been scammed.

This metric has never been a ranking factor.

It never mattered.

And Google has said exactly that too multiple times.

Yet somehow, I keep seeing sample reports clients get and that’s one of the things covered.

Let me be clear:

→ Google doesn’t reward pages with a higher text-to-code ratio
 → Google doesn’t punish pages with too much code
 → Google doesn’t even look at this metric

So why do agencies still include it?

Because it’s an easy way to:

✔Scare non-technical clients
 ✔Pretend an audit is deeper than it really is
 ✔Justify “issues” that don’t exist
 ✔Sell fixes that don’t actually improve performance
✔Make them sound smarter than they actually are

Meanwhile, the real problems get ignored, the ones that actually move needle (80/20 of SEO):

→Indexation issues
 →Crawler traps
 →Missing contextual internal links or underutilized contextual internal rinks
 →JS issues  
 →Broken technical fundamentals

The job of an SEO audit is not about creating issues or pointing things out to charge more money. 

It’s about identifying the real ones and fixing them.

I’ve never included this in any of my audits, nor do I plan too

If your audit still has this, you've just been bamboozled.

You can’t call yourself an SEO until you’ve ranked something from scratch.

I’ve learned more from building and ranking websites than I ever have from reading about SEO.

Starting out, I would read every single SEO blog and ultimate guide feeling like I had to know every single thing about SEO.

This is the biggest beginner trap you can make as an SEO and it will hinder your growth.

Once I stopped making excuses and actually started building and ranking websites, I learned 100x as much as I was learning from any guide or blog post.

It actually forces you to learn new skills like using WordPress, understanding SEO beyond just title tags and meta data, how to create a strategy etc.

In my time building and ranking websites, I’ve ranked sites from scratch, sold them and taken on multiple clients. 

There is no perfect condition for starting SEO.

Get some basic knowledge and learn the rest along the way.

When did you start and rank your first website?

Enterprise seo is 80% reporting 20% actual seo work

I keep seeing this horrible SEO myth on LinkedIn: “SEO is dead.”

But, Google searches have doubled and ChatGPT usage has tripled.

It’s not SEO vs GEO, it’s SEO + GEO.

Here's what's actually happening: Google still processes 14 billion searches daily. 

ChatGPT does 2.5 billion.

But here's the shift: A growing percentage of searches are being answered directly by AI without sending traffic.

Your rankings can be perfect and your traffic can still be declining.

I've watched this play out across multiple sites I manage: rankings stable or 
improving, but traffic trends downward.

Meanwhile, brands showing up in ChatGPT responses are seeing traffic that converts 3x better.

The companies saying "SEO is dead" are the ones who haven't adapted.

The ones quietly winning are doing both:

→ Optimizing content for traditional search rankings 
→ Structuring it so LLMs can cite and recommend them 
→ Tracking visibility across Google AND AI platforms 
→ Using tools that show where ChatGPT mentions competitors but not them

This isn't about abandoning SEO. It's about expanding what SEO means.

If you're only optimizing for Google in 2026, you're optimizing for half the market.

The future isn't SEO vs GEO.

It's brands who understand both channels versus brands who picked a side and lost.

Spam scores don’t tank your site.

But disavowing backlinks blindly absolutely can.

This year alone, I’ve seen multiple sites trust third-party tools to tell them what backlinks to disavow.

None of these sites had a manual penalty.

None of them needed to dissavow links.

They trusted third party SEO tools and their traffic and bottom-line suffered because of it.

I’m not going to bash the tools.

They can be useful in the right situations.

But, you still need to use your brain.

For some SEOs, especially in the era of AI and shiny objects, critical thinking feels like an afterthought. 

Google ignores most low-quality backlinks on its own.
 
A disavow only makes sense in two scenarios:
 
→You’ve actually received a manual penalty
→You were hit with a sudden wave of spammy, low-quality links (e.g., thousands of blogger links in a short period, which I recently saw)

Outside of that?

Disavowing links because a tool said so is one of the fastest ways to hurt a healthy site.

Please be smart and understand the risks before you do it.

What are your thoughts on spam score and toxic links?

Spam score and toxic links are some of the most misleading aspects of SEO:

I’ve seen more sites destroyed, than helped by disavowing these links. 

This year alone I have seen multiple sites trust third-party tools blindly to advise them what backlinks to disavow.

None of these sites had a manual penalty.

They were trusting these tools to be their guide and they’re traffic suffered in the process.

I’m not going to bad mouth the tools, since they can be useful in some cases.

But, you need to use your brain. 

This is something that almost seems like an afterthought for some SEOs between AI and shiny objects.

More often than not, Google will ignore most of these links, but here’s a few situations it makes sense:

- If you have actually received a manual penalty 

- Received a massive amount of spammy low-quality links in a short amount of time say a month or less. Recently saw this and was spammed with a bunch of blogger links.

Please be smart and know the risks before you’re doing it.

People don’t care if you use AI to create images.

Some of my recent best-performing posts on this platform were 100% AI.

If something is good, regardless of the medium, people will like it. 

Stock images are great and all, but sometimes you want that special image and if you use stock photos you’re basically confirming to the needs of the platform and not what you want yourself.

If you're waiting for AI to return the clicks to your site… keep waiting.

AI search sends ~1% of traffic back to websites, Google sends 325× more:

Sites I'm managing have lost 50%+ Google clicks a year and no, AI has not replaced that traffic, nor do I see that happening. 

I'm not going to say clicks aren't important any more, because for anyone that actually relies on, or their income is tied to people clicking ads on their site, they would say you're high.

SEOs how has your strategy changed since LLMs changed everything?

How does someone go from sports management to SEO career?

Here’s the truth.

After college I did a few internships.

Realized there was no jobs and way too many people in the field.

Started a sports blog, wanted to promote it and taught myself SEO in the process.

Had a few internships, that turned into a few jobs and now 14 years in my career, I could say It worked out well.

But, it has never been easy:

→People used to pass on me in interviews because I wasn't enthusiastic.

→I've been fired because I was too negative.

→I started a job and quit after two weeks with no plan b.

→ My autism held me back.

→ dealt with crippling work related injuries.

 But made it through.

No one intends to get into SEO, it kind of just happens.

How did you get into SEO?

Hell has officially frozen over:

Google is promoting an AI content tool, but it doesn't surprise me.

Every since Google first started in 1998 they've continually contradicted themselves and misled people.

They've said things like 

"Don't be evil" (they're evil)

" We don't user user engagement" (shown in court fillings)

" AI overviews are leading to more clicks to websites" etc (shown in multiple seo studies)

I'm not saying this is the last straw and that you should not listen to them anymore, but don't be surprised any more.

I have no problem with Google endorsing an AI tool to create content, but when you say "content in a consistent, scalable way.”

That meets the mark of their "Scaled content abuse policy."  

Is Google cooked?

The world of SEO has changed more in the past 3 years, than it has in the last 25 years.

Here’s why:

Google is no longer the only game in town.

LLMs have upended what we know as the traditional buyer’s journey.

I know because I’ve seen some sites I manage lose 40% traffic YoY.

The traditional KPIs like visits, rankings and traffic are no longer enough to see if you’re doing well when customers see you online.

If you’re not tracking how you’re showing up on LLMs you will be left behind fast.

But, most LLM tracking software is not actually accurate and they make up synthetic prompts.

I’ve tried a ton of tools over the past year or so and Ahrefs new Brand Radar tool is the best one i’ve come across.

They recently leveled up the tool:

-You can now see where you’re cited in LLM responses 

-Track all variations of your brand name

-See impressions and share of AI voice

I’ve used these new features to see where our competitors are showing up where we aren’t.

This has become a great new competitive analysis tool in an already great Ahrefs tool site.
