Being good at SEO doesn't just mean you're good at SEO.

SEO is more than just ranking websites. 

You need to be able to explain how you've done it, show what the impact will be, and tie it back to revenue or whatever your success metrics are in this case.

Most clients will not care about keyword ranking increases and traffic increases if it doesn't improve their bottom line at the end of the day.

So, don't just do things to do them. Make sure you know that your activities and things you will do will have an impact.

2024 and the amount of businesses I see doing £millions a year in turnover (with healthy profits) who nit-pick over SEO retainers less than 10% of their paid spend - these same businesses go from SEO to SEO thinking their measly budget is finally going to generate MASSIVE YIELDS - knocking ROI out of the park.

SEO's be like, here's one trick to recover from the Core update:

Sometimes though, it's just luck and timing.

In all honesty, this has been one of the most insane updates I've seen since the panda and penguin updates in the early 2010s.

Will this stick, who knows?

The core update, though is not time to stop doing SEO. Personally, I'm continuing to create content, add contextual links, and acquire backlinks. 

At the end of the day, you need to continue to do the right things and see what happens.

What truly defines being a great SEO is being able to weather the storm and balance both short-term and long-term outlooks for both your clients and your own projects.

Fixing someone else's SEO when you went for the cheaper solution.

I know the allure of all these cheap freelancers and these people selling SEO for barely anything on Fiverr might seem like a good idea, but more often than not in SEO, you get what you pay for.

Save time, headaches, and maybe even a little money in the long term by picking the best solution, which is not always the cheapest solution!

If you genuinely were supporting other's work and like what they're doing, please repost and call it a day.

One of the easiest ways to improve your crawl depth on your site is to create an HTML sitemap.

Ideally, you should have all the pages on your site 3-4 clicks from the root domain.

This is especially useful if you have a massive website. It can make it easier for Google to crawl your site and recrawl pages that may not get crawled otherwise a ton if they weren't in an HTML sitemap.

My Favorite Chrome Extensions Part 2:

Robots Exclusion Checker: 

I don't hear this tool mentioned often, but it's solid. It will show you a Live URL checks against robots.txt, meta robots, x-robots-tag & canonical tags. Saves the time of also checking the robots.txt

Web Developer Plugin:

This is a solid extension all around, but I mainly use it to see what pages without Javascript will look like as far as if content will render without the DOM. Which I will then use this next plugin: View Rendered Source.

View Rendered Source:

This extension allows you to see the source code before and after the page is rendered. This is super useful for sites that really heavily on JS. Like react or SPA.

 Loom:

Not necessarily to do with SEO, but I use this a ton. It makes it super easy to screen record and shows your face for that added personal touch.

Redirect Path:

This is one tool I use frequently.  It detects errors, redirect loops, and status codes while browsing a website. Super useful, especially if you want to spot-check a large list of redirected URLs.

SEO Pro Extension:

Love, love, love this tool from Kristina Azarenko. I use it daily it shows you a variety of information from meta data, headers, robots.txt , schema, internal and external links as well.

Keywords Everwhere:

I use to love this tool a ton, but now they have put time limits on credits. But, it's still a solid tool for keyword research and ideas if you willing to pay for it.

The single biggest change that has had the most impact on my professional/ personal life this year is challenging myself daily and weekly.

What do I mean by that?

Doing something that you genuinely find it's outside of your comfort zone and you may not do it naturally or without a nudge, so to speak.

I've done that in the following ways this year:

- Joined a weekly improv class.

- Gone to a speed dating event.

-  Talked to people and strangers in public I didn't know and started a conversation.

- Went to social and local meetups where I did not know a single person and networked and chatted.

- Jumped at the chance to say yes to every opportunity that is presented to me to try new things within reason.

- Gone above and beyond of what's expected from me in my job description. 

Here's how you can implement it in your life: 

- Take action. The more you think about the perfect time to do something, the more you will wait and put things off. Action cures anxiety.

- Be willing to try something new before saying you don't like it. You may never know.

- Be genuinely interested and curious to learn more about others and be present in the experience or conversation.

We had meetings scheduled. We had plans.

But the music stopped and I won’t dance in silence.

I’m getting new DMs as I’m writing this post. I can read them but I cannot reply without risking losing my account.

Imagine how I feel reading you but having to ignore you!

Linkedin may forever BAN my account because I'm a SPAMMER!

SEO tactics are not an SEO strategy: 

Anyone can say they employ the best tactics and things to improve your website. 

But just throwing a bunch of things at a website and hoping the site improves is not a recipe for success.

There should be a method and reasoning behind why you’re doing things and how that plays into the overall strategy.

So before you get sold on some SEO tactics, make sure the consultant or SEO agency truly outlines what they’re going to do for your website and has a detailed plan on how they can improve things.

You shouldn't just be fixing 404 errors, but preventing them from happening in the first place!

Often as SEOs we’re fast to fix errors or things wrong with ours or our client’s sites, but if you don’t know why something is happening, then you can’t prevent it from happening and continuing on.

It’s extremely important that you figure out the source of the issue that causes 404s. 

This may take longer, but it will save the countless hours of updating and mapping 404s to new pages.

How do you usually fix 404s? Fix the actual cause or apply a Band-Aid approach?

Here’s what I would do if I was starting a site from Scratch in 2024:

Figure Out Your Target Keyword(s) for Your Main Pages:

Don’t just go after the highest volume keywords, but go after what is most relevant to your audience and plan each page around a single topic. 

So, if I wanted to create a site about cat’s one main topic for a single page would best cat toys. 

Plan Your Supporting Content:

Now that you have planned the main topics for the pages, it’s time to plan the supporting content. So you could create pages around things like cat facts, how to feed a cat, how to change cat litter boxes etc.

Make sure you don’t launch the site until you have at least 5 supporting pieces of content for each “hub page”. This may take a bit longer, but it will really help you crush it out of the gate!

Cover your EEAT:

It’s very important that you establish early on the Experience Expertise Authority and Trust (EEAT) for your site. 

Some ways you can do that early on are creating privacy pages, having a way people can contact you, having a strong about us page, setting up in-depth bio pages, and mentioning things on articles like expert reviewed by, etc.

Last but not least backlinks. Claim and create all pages on social media platforms that are relevant for you and leverage existing connections/ resources to get those quick wins.  

Establish Strong Interlinking:

Have your most important pages in the header and footer. This helps to have them super close to route and makes it super easy for Google to crawl. When possible, have both contextual and internal links on each page.  To distribute your link equity to those pages further away from the root on your site.

The Key To SEO Growth Isn't What You Think

April is Autism Awareness Month, so I want employers/recruiters to be aware of something: Ethuasim doesn't always determine interest! 

Early on in my career, I would interview tireselly and never get past the first round of interviews. 

I was more than qualified for many of these roles, but people just passed on me because I did not show enthusiasm in interviews.

I did my best and told them I was genuinely interested, but that didn't make a difference. This went on for about two years.

It wasn't until I worked with Marci Shaffer that she suggested the idea of disclosing that I had high-functioning Aspergers did I gain success and started to make it further in interviews and eventually ended up with a job.

But, it shouldn't be this way, but it often is! 

You should hire someone on whether or not they're qualified and can do the job. Obviously, if it's a sales job, enthusiasm and energy is a key part, but for many jobs, this is not always the case.

So if you're an employer, how should you apply this advice?

👉 Realize that if someone took the time to apply for your job, they're genuinely interested. Enthusiasm should not make or break them.

👉 Realize just because someone is monotone or their body language is not positive doesn't mean they're not genuinely interested in the role.

👉 Also, get out the notion that Asperger's is only a certain way, and most people think of it as an extreme. There's a spectrum for a reason, and each and every person is unique.

Last of all, give these people a chance. 

You were probably in that same position one day yourself where no one believed in you or felt like you could do something.

It only takes one person to belive you can do the job or whatever to change your life!

Social Media is a great way to get additional traffic to your site and also may help to indirectly improve your branded search impressions. 

With the majority of search results including either  quora or Reddit results, now is the time to start as Google is pushing these pages more and more.

Forums:

Forums are another great way to mix up your traffic if you can find one to your niche. Don’t just spam them though. Generally, try to be helpful and offer your expertise on the subject. 

An easy way to find them at this point is to just put in your “target keyword and forums” into Google and you will find tons.

Email/Newsletter: 

The great thing about email is if Google or the search engines make a drastic changes and it affects your traffic, you still have the people that opted into your list. 

It’s also another great way to upsell or sell your services or digital products.
