How Is LinkedIn’s Engagement Rate Calculated?

The Formula
The calculation of LinkedIn’s Engagement Rate is simple. You will need the following stats out of your dashboard:

You get access to all these insights on your LinkedIn dashboard. Simply go to your post summary page and choose the post you want to analyze.
To calculate the engagement rate, simply divide the number of likes, comments, and shares you’ve gotten in your post by the total impressions on your post.
Now, to the fun part! Let’s calculate our engagement rate using this simple formula:
The Basic Formula:
ER (Engagement Rate) = ((Total Engagement (Reactions + Comments + Shares)) / Impressions)*100
Let’s use a quick example, so you see how to calculate it using real values:
The values we are calculating with:
ER (Engagement Rate in %) = ((Total Engagement (44 + 12 + 1)) / 1250) * 100
Step 1: Calculating the “Total Engagement”
ER (Engagement Rate in %) = (57 / 1250) * 100
Step 2: Divide your “Total Engagement” by your Impressions
ER (Engagement Rate in %) = (57 / 1250) * 100
Step 3: Multiply the result by100
4,56% (Engagement Rate in %) = 0,0456 * 100
Tip: You have to be careful: The fewer impressions you have, the less meaningful the outcome is. For example, it’s a huge difference if your post has 500 impressions or 5000 impressions. 5k is more statistically significant than 500 impressions.
What Is a Good Engagement Rate?
I’ve seen posts getting anywhere between 1% – 8% engagement rates being called ‘successful’ or ‘engaging’. If you’re using engagement pods or other artificial means, this will be much higher, maybe 10-20%, but that’s not something to emulate.
It largely depends upon the industry you’re in, your job position, your existing reputation in the market, and your network. And most importantly, it depends on the quality of your content and its relevance to your audience.
Suppose you’re posting top-quality content, but it does not address the needs of your audience. It’s still going to perform badly and get low engagement.
However, if your content matches the intent and pain points of your audience and actually offers them solutions, sooner or later, it’s going to pick up.
Coming back to what a good engagement rate is, I’ve worked with many accounts that are happy when getting 1-3% engagement, while I’ve known others (ambitious ones) who aim for between 5-10% engagement rate.
Again, it depends on your goals, your target audience, and your content.
