I have a friend who likes to keep their options open. Sometimes this works well for them, and sometimes it doesn’t. 

This strategy doesn’t always work well for people in a job search.

When it comes to job searching, a broad approach doesn’t work best.

You’d be surprised how often I speak with job seekers who have launched a blind search. They have no specific role, industry, or goal in mind.

These same professionals are frequently confused and frustrated because their efforts are proving to be futile.

No surprise. A goal without a plan is just a wish – right?

Before kicking off any kind of job search, identify a clear job target. Ask yourself:

-- What kinds of jobs interest you? 

-- What does your ideal role look like?

-- Where do your strengths lie?

-- What do you like to do? Not like to do?

-- What kind of company do you want to work for? 

-- Who is hiring right now?


If your answer is “I don’t care, I just need a job,” you aren’t giving yourself any type of advantage.

In fact, a job search is less likely to be successful if it’s broad versus specific. 

Looking for ANY job can be likened to taking shots in the dark. Without a narrowed target, you won’t be able to concentrate your efforts, talk to the right people, and build well-aligned career tools (resume and LinkedIn profile). 

Pinpoint a target before you execute a search. 

Spending sufficient time upfront thinking about where you want to work, what you want to do, and how you plan to get there can save you a lot of time and energy in the long run.

You know those posts where people share a picture of their resume and say: "This is the resume I used to get a job at [Google / Apple / Netflix]." I'm sure you've seen them.

Just because that resume worked for that person doesn't mean it will work the same for you.

Why?

1. You are unique; therefore, your resume should be too. If you try to copy that resume, especially the person's actual verbiage, you are using smoke and mirrors to get hired, which rarely works.

2. If that person used a template - remember that many resume templates don't account for individual strategy. You might need an entirely different resume format or layout to best spotlight YOUR career and offerings.

3. Maybe that person only used a one-page resume, but you need more space to share relevant and important details. You are shooting yourself in the foot if you try to conform to unnecessary space constraints. Yes, it is ok to go over one page if warranted. Just keep details concise and relevant. 

4. Finally, and most importantly, you don't know what other strategies this person employed to get hired. Their process may have involved research, talking to the right people, being referred, correctly positioning their value, and nailing the interview. They may have applied to many roles before they landed 'the one.' A resume alone doesn't get someone a job.

Write a resume that works for you.
I can't say it enough: you are unique; therefore, your resume should be, too.

Be the solution a company seeks! To succeed at this in your resume, you must do 3 things:
 
 

1️⃣ Understand each company’s unique pain points.

Pain points typically center around making money, saving money, or generating improvements in certain areas.
 

2️⃣ Sell yourself as the solution. 

Demonstrate how you can add value to the role by sharing 
specific and measurable examples of past success in the areas of need.
 

3️⃣ Use their language and keywords.
 
Carefully consider each audience and feed them details using their language and related keywords.



How do you know what employers need and what keywords or language
to emphasize?
 
The job posting tells you! 

You can even do a quick Google search and scour job ads of interest, looking for themes in pain points, language, and keywords.

Some people get derailed in their job search by focusing efforts exclusively on only one step of the process (locating job postings) or one tool (developing a resume).

Job seekers sometimes forget that a job search is a journey of many activities and actions that must be strategically arranged and adequately executed to increase success.

Focusing all efforts on one ‘basket’ will produce lackluster results.
Instead, a diversified job search approach is required.

Items to consider:

🔔 Pick a target before you execute. 

A shot fired in the dark is unlikely to hit a target. Identify a clear job target before you commence a search to avoid spinning your wheels in frustration. General job searches rarely work.

🔔 Know what sets you apart.

You can’t sell something if you don’t know what makes it worthy of investment. Identify notable career achievements - and be prepared to articulate them - to support your value.

🔔 Research job requirements and understand employers’ buying motivators. 

Knowing what 'matters most' to employers of interest will help you keep content and communications targeted. Use sites like LinkedIn to research people and companies. Understand their needs and work to position yourself as a solution.

🔔 Get career documents perfectly polished

Create a resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, executive biography, references sheet, and thank you letter. Yes, potentially all of these. Know which documents will be valued in your process.

🔔 Beef up your online presence.

Keep online information on-brand and highly professional. If you haven't built a robust profile on LinkedIn that shares your narrative and promotes your value – do so. Now. Then, start engaging on the site regularly.

🔔 Iron out ‘wrinkles’ or employment barriers.

Missing skill sets? No related experience? Fired in the past? What challenges are you likely to face in the journey, and how are you prepared to deal with them?

🔔 Prepare for the interview.

This involves practice and preparation. There is no other way around it. If you want to nail this critical step in the process - you must invest.

🔔 Network.

Both online and off. One of the biggest ROI in a job search is networking and referrals. People don't hire resumes, they hire people -- so talk to more people!
 

🔔 Finally, seek assistance if you need it.

You don’t need to tackle this journey alone. Be open to suggestions, align yourself with people who can help, and invest – fully!


You can’t just dip your toe in the employment waters and expect a quick and well-suited bite. Nor can you invest in just one step or tool and expect results.

I didn't turn on my computer or respond to emails for over a week. Nothing was urgent, and I had an OOO on. And guess what? 

Everything is still ok. :)

But.... many people have reached out for resume assistance. They want to be ready to job search as we head into spring.

Savvy individuals recognize the importance of having a strong resume ready. Regardless of profession, job target, or economy -- a resume is likely to be requested at some point in the hiring process. 

Here are my top 6 tips – in a nutshell – for creating a great resume:

1. Identify your job target before putting ‘pen to paper’
2. Integrate the right language and keywords into the file
3. Provide the proof. Focus on results, results, results!
4. Align all content with employer requirements
5. Cut out anything unrelated
6. Write concisely. Share specifics using fewer words

According to data collected by Robert Half, 25% of Canadian workers would take an average 16% pay cut to work remotely all the time. Would you?
