Oversaw logistics related to launch and management for a new program to help professional level job seekers. Career Navigator was offered weekly at multiple locations with classes up to 25 participants. Each class was 5 days and covered topics including self-assessment, networking, resume writing, job search strategies and interviewing. Over 2,500 participants graduated from the program in the years it was delivered.

Coordinated over 30 monthly workshops for job seekers.  Facilitated job search workshops, on and off-site, to clients from all levels and backgrounds.  Identified, coordinated, and promoted guest speakers to address the needs of customers.  

•  Implemented a guest speaker series of workshops to address the needs of job seekers.  These workshops are consistently the best attended workshops offered.

•  Analyzed registration and attendance data used to efficiently schedule monthly workshops.

•  Initiated new workshops for small businesses resulting in increased revenues.

•  Redesigned workshops by updating content and reformatting for consistency which led to ease of facilitation and improved quality to customers.

•  Facilitated workshops at company career center which increased awareness of RochesterWorks! services among the employees.

•  Delivered change management workshops to dislocated Wegmans’ employees that helped enable them to transition on to new job opportunities.

•  Created summary reports used to capture feedback from over 120 employees.  This report supplied client and career center with information used to deliver future workshops.

•  Dynamically presented daily workshops to professional participants resulting in an average satisfaction rating of 4.75 on 5 point scale.

Struggling to stay focused in your job search?

You’re not alone.

When you were working, your days had structure: meetings, deadlines, priorities, and a calendar to keep it all together. But as a job seeker, that structure disappears. Suddenly, it’s easy to get sidetracked by errands, home projects, or “productive procrastination.”

Here’s the truth:
 🔑 The best way to make progress in your job search is to treat it like your job (or side gig if you are employed and looking).

Set a schedule. Stick to it. Protect your time.

🕗 Try something like this:
 Monday–Friday, 8–5 (or whatever hours work for you).
 
Just remember not to exceed 30 hours a week. You need weekends and downtime to recharge. And carve out time daily just for you! 

Here’s what to block time for ⏱️
 ✅ Networking: 1:1 meetings and conversations
 ✅ Email: Follow up, respond, and reach out
 ✅ Phone time: Return calls, schedule meetings
 ✅ LinkedIn: Post updates, comment, engage, and research
 ✅ Knowledge update: Read, learn, and grow
 ✅ Online applications: Quality over quantity
 ✅ Me time: Move your body, volunteer, do what energizes you

10 ways to revive your job search this Halloween

Where are you looking to find your next job?

If you spend all your time searching the job boards for openings, you may be missing out.

As you can see from the iHire data in the slides, not every job is posted on job boards. 

Companies use many different channels to promote job openings so if you only look at one job board, you probably won’t see every opening. 

iHire lists these as the top places employers promote jobs (besides job boards)
◾Referrals from current employees - 71.3%
◾Our company website/dedicated careers page on our website - 49.5%
◾Professional networking sites (e.g., LinkedIn) - 46.1%
◾Social media (e.g., Facebook, TikTok) - 43.5%
◾Alumni/school networks and career centers - 34.0%

Job Seekers look here according to the iHire data: 
🔹General job boards - 78.5%
🔹Professional networking sites (e.g., LinkedIn) - 54.9%
🔹Industry-specific or niche job boards - 53.8%

Do you see the mismatch?

DIVERSIFY WHERE YOU LOOK

As you look at the many places employers promote job openings (and where few job seekers look) are: 
💡Networking
💡Professional Associations
💡Alumni/School Networks/Career Centers
💡Print Ads (kind of surprising)

No two companies have the same strategies to promote openings. And it will vary depending on the type of job. 

Look at these numbers and adjust where you look and spend less time only searching on job boards!

How Employers Fill Jobs 2025

Layoffs s*ck! 

They impact former employees and those still employed. 

Layoffs damage self-confidence, relationships, and financial stability.

And yet, they continue to happen. 

So, if you have recently been laid off or know someone who has, take care of yourself. 

Grieve, breathe, and surround yourself with those who care about you. 

Another job will come along. (But usually not as quickly as you want or need). 

There are a lot of wonderful people who want to help. But watch out for scams. 

Here's a really quick list of things you'll want to do when you are ready. 

1. Understand your severance package
2. Compile information on past projects, tasks, and assignments
3. Determine what you want to do next
4. Research jobs and salaries
5. Don’t keep your job search a secret
6. Plan and practice your pitch
7. Know how to explain your layoff
8. Look for opportunities to volunteer
9. Update your LinkedIn profile
10. Update your resume
11. Join or form a job search accountability group
12. Talk to your family
13. Build lists
14. Cut unnecessary expenses immediately
15. Create a weekly plan
16. Learn new skills
17. Learn to say no/stay focused
18. Accept that it might take some time
19. Take care of yourself (mentally and physically)

You'll be ok!

If your job search has dragged on for months and the silence or rejections are wearing you down, please know you’re not alone. 

Many job seekers hit this wall. When that happens, it might be time to activate what I call “Plan B.”

Plan B doesn’t mean giving up on your goals. It’s a strategic pause. It's a way to regain momentum, confidence, and structure while still keeping your long-term career in sight.

Taking a temporary or alternative job can help you:
🔔 Break the cycle of rejection or waiting
🔔 Rebuild your daily rhythm and sense of purpose
🔔 Earn income and reconnect with your professional value

Sometimes, just doing something changes everything.

How to Create Your Plan B
Set aside 20 quiet minutes and let yourself dream a little.
 
Write down everything you enjoy doing. Don’t filter yourself, even if it feels unrealistic or unrelated to your career path. This is where creativity begins.

If you get stuck (and most people do), try these prompts:
❓What activities made you happiest as a kid?
❓Which past job did you love and what made it great?
❓What type of work or environment energizes you now?

Then, share your list with a supportive friend, someone who listens without judgment. Ask them to help you:

💡Spot potential jobs or industries that connect with your interests
💡Think of adjacent or creative opportunities
💡Brainstorm people you could reach out to
💡Identify anyone they know who owns or manages a business

How to Find and Land a Plan B Job
Plan B jobs often come through conversations, not applications.
 
Skip the online portals and start with people. Walk in, pick up the phone, and be honest about your situation.

Here’s a simple, genuine approach:
“I love your restaurant and the friendly energy here. I have some extra time right now and would love to help out. Do you need someone to fill a shift or lend a hand?”

Be sincere. Be specific. And don’t get discouraged if they say no. Timing is everything. Keep showing up, keep asking, and keep connecting.

Plan B Job Ideas
Seasonal & Local Opportunities 
The holiday season brings a surge in short-term jobs. Consider opportunities like:
- Retail stores 
- Delivery services 
- Event venues 
- Restaurants and cafés 
- Hotels and resorts 
- Nonprofits and community organizations 
- Winter recreation 

Year-Round Opportunities:
- Customer service or call centers
- Hotel or hospitality roles
- Office or facilities services

These jobs may not be your long-term dream, but they can get you engaged and active again. And that momentum? It’s powerful.

One Last Thought
If you’re skeptical, that’s okay. Plan B isn’t about lowering your standards. It’s about rebuilding your confidence and creating space for new opportunities to find you.

Sometimes, the path to your next great job starts somewhere unexpected.

If your job search begins and ends on job boards, you’re missing out.

Remember, no two companies have the same strategies to promote openings. And how and where they promote jobs will vary depending on the type of job.

How to stop limiting your job search to job boards 

Career development isn’t just about skills or strategy. It’s also about connection.

Who you surround yourself with can directly impact your confidence, mindset, and success.

🔹81% of lonely adults reported anxiety or depression 
🔹About 75% said they had little or no meaning or purpose
(according to a 2024 Harvard study.)

We each can play a role in changing that.

Employed or unemployed, we’re all human, and one of the simplest things we can do is maintain our connections. You never know who needs an empathetic ear or just wants to feel seen and valued.

And don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. As flight attendants remind us: “Please put your oxygen mask on first so you can help those traveling with you.”

💡 Use this checklist to get through the tough months ahead or share it with someone who might need it.

If you want to be intentional, focus on these four groups:

Past colleagues – they already know your strengths
People inside companies you’re interested in
Alumni – you share a built-in connection
Vendors and suppliers – they know you and what’s going on in the industry

🗓 How to Structure a 20–30 Minute Meeting

Time goes fast, so set a simple agenda to stay focused:
1️⃣ Greetings & small talk: 3–5 minutes
2️⃣ Your purpose and quick intro: 3–5 minutes
3️⃣ Ask questions & listen: 15–20 minutes
4️⃣ Wrap up: 3–5 minutes — thank them, ask for other contacts, and offer help in return

Networking works best when it’s a two-way conversation. It isn’t a pitch.
Be curious. Be clear. Be grateful.

Let’s talk about how to get referred! 

🚀 PROACTIVE APPROACH
Before a job is posted, contact people who work inside companies you are interested in working for. (Create a target list of companies.)

Start reaching out to people you already know who work inside these target companies. (They are more likely to have a conversation with you because they already know you.)

Even if the person you know isn’t in the right department, they still have opinions about what it’s like to work for the company. Once you’ve had a conversation, you can ask if they will introduce you to someone who works in the department you are interested in.

Remember, your objective is to speak with people inside companies to learn what it is like to work there. (You are not asking them to find you a job!)

So what do you do if you don’t know anyone inside the company?

You can reach out via email or through LinkedIn and ask someone who works in the role or department you are interested in if they have time for a 15-minute call with you so you can learn about their experience with the company.

Since the person does not know you, the odds are a bit slimmer that they would take time to speak with you. Look for and mention things you have in common such as:
•	Cities 
•	Organizations 
•	Schools 
•	Companies 
 
⚙️ REACTIVE OPTION
The second way to get referred happens after you’ve found a job opportunity.

Before you apply, find employees you know. Use your in-person network, LinkedIn, or social media. (Former employees are also a good source of information!)

Always tap into your existing network first when you find a job. Ask the people you know the best steps to take to get referred (and who you can speak with to learn more about the role).

It’s easier and faster to reach out to the people you know and ask them to refer you for the job than to try to build new relationships with employees you do not already know.
