Copy/Paste Coding vs. True Development: A Real-Time Interview Story.

We recently interviewed a candidate for a Senior Drupal Developer role. This person sounded perfect on paper and during the first part of the interview, they could flawlessly answer every theoretical question about how software systems should be built. Their knowledge was impressive!

Then came the moment of truth: a small, practical task where they had to write a few lines of code live by sharing their screen.

The change was immediate. The candidate grew uncomfortable and admitted they would have to rely heavily on copying pre-written code from the internet and using an AI assistant (like ChatGPT) to solve the problem.

I gave them permission, curious to observe their process.

Here’s the stunning reality: Even with the best AI tools and unlimited search access, the final code still didn't work.

This scenario perfectly highlights the difference between knowing something and doing something.

For a Senior role, whether in software, engineering, or finance, we don't just need people who have memorized facts. We need true problem-solvers.

In the age of AI, the critical skills are no longer about remembering the answer, but about:

Spotting the Error: The ability to look at what the AI produced and instantly know why it's wrong or how to fix it for your specific situation.

Connecting the Dots: Taking theoretical knowledge and applying it practically, even when the tools fail.

Validation: Understanding the fundamentals well enough to confirm that the 'easy answer' is actually the correct and secure solution.

The quality of the final product always comes down to the human developer's ability to validate, integrate, and debug the output of their tools.

I love this phrase.

Usually, we use the word "indulge" for luxuries, like a dessert or a vacation. But for a leader, empathy IS the luxury you must afford your team.

It is easy to be transactional. 

It is efficient to be cold.

It is much harder to stop, step out of your own ego, and step into someone else's reality. 

It takes effort. It takes emotional bandwidth.

But that indulgence is exactly what separates a Boss from a Leader.

A Boss drives results. A Leader drives people, who then drive results.

Make empathy your daily habit.

The Unconventional Communication Take: Why WhatsApp is a Dark Horse Alternative to Slack (Ignoring Integrations)

​We often default to Slack for internal team comms, but strip away the hundreds of third-party integrations, and let's look purely at the core communication experience.

​My take? For many small to mid-sized teams, WhatsApp is a better, more efficient alternative to Slack.

​Here’s why, considering only the native feature set:
​1. Zero Friction Adoption: Everyone already uses WhatsApp. There is virtually no learning curve or mandatory app download. Adoption is instant, which is crucial for quick-start projects or less tech-savvy teams.

​2. Superior Mobile Experience: WhatsApp's core design is mobile-first. Its speed, reliability, and push notification management often outperform Slack's mobile app, especially in areas with unstable connectivity.

​3. Simple, Focused Interface: Slack's sidebar, threads, and channels can become an overwhelming source of context switching. WhatsApp's chat list is uncluttered and laser-focused on the conversation itself, promoting simplicity.

​4. Group Voice/Video Calls: WhatsApp's native, high-quality voice and video calling features are immediately accessible within any group chat, often faster to launch than hopping onto a separate Slack Huddle/Call.

​The catch? Yes, you lose the searchable history, the granular channel organization, and the power of integrations. 

But for teams prioritizing speed, mobile agility, and minimalist communication, WhatsApp offers a surprising amount of utility.
