Last Saturday in Bonaire, I planned to lead a training on Growth and Change Management. However, when I asked the participants what they wanted to learn, everyone shared the same challenge: feeling overwhelmed by the demands of entrepreneurship. This led me to shift our focus to include how to balance work with personal life and creativity as part of the training.

We compared the "manager's schedule" and the "maker's schedule." Most found they were stuck in a manager's role, filled with endless tasks and little time for deep work or creativity.

We discussed several strategies to take back control:

1. Elimination - Cutting out non-essential tasks.
2. Simplification - Streamlining processes.
3. Automation - Using technology to handle repetitive tasks.
4. Delegation - Empowering teams to take on more responsibilities.

These methods help us not just manage our time, but also make room for important aspects of our lives. If you're struggling with too much management and not enough creation, consider shifting towards a maker's mindset.

In closing the training, I invited participants to visualize their ideal day, encompassing everything they want to experience, grow, and contribute. It was a powerful reminder that while many of us start our businesses driven by passion, we can easily become “managers,” forgetting that it was our “making/creation” that initially fueled our journey.

Emotions are a Catalyst for Change!

Last week, Deva-Dee Siliee and I facilitated a workshop that brought a crucial insight to light: the transformative power of integrating emotions into our professional dialogues, especially in the context of systemic change. While beliefs and behaviors often capture our attention, it's the emotions bridging these elements that govern our actions.

In complex networks of diverse organizations, addressing emotional undercurrents is essential to foster systemic change. These emotions are at the core of collaboration, driving us towards or steering us away from meaningful transformation.

Through empathy mapping and the Emotional Culture Deck, we discovered:

- Needs are at the Heart: The focus shifted from our assumptions to the actual needs of the people we want to support, highlighting the importance of understanding over presumption.
- Empathy: Far from just facilitating empathy, these tools deepened it, drawing us into the emotional worlds of those we aim to support, enhancing our connection and understanding.
- Safe Conversations: The creation of a space where sensitive topics could be openly discussed was crucial. 

Our greatest insight? The recognition that addressing our own emotional needs is as vital as supporting others. This understanding is key to sustaining our impact over time.

Recently, I observed a client session where the leader, with good intentions, dominated the conversation. His approach was hands-on, providing instructions and solutions. Yet, feedback from his team was eye-opening—they craved more involvement. 
 
This led to an epiphany: Great leadership isn't about solving every problem. It's about empowering your team.
