Brands Forbid Advertising Agencies From Using AI

One day, the receptionist at Rockstar Games called in sick. That's when my career in games began. 

A temp agency sent me, a hapless kid with no direction and no ambition, to cover for her. They told me to wear a tie. As the Rockstars rolled in that morning, I knew that was a bad note. I took off the tie, ruffled the hair, tried to look cool,  tried to look confident.

One day as temp receptionist turned into three days, then that turned into six weeks upstairs in Take Two's HR dept, sorting spreadsheets. Then came the fateful question: would you like to work on the new Grand Theft Auto, John? Being a hapless kid with no direction, I debated that for a while, but ultimately said yes. I'm glad I did.

If you want to have a career writing for games, consider starting as the team's receptionist. Infiltrate under the radar. Show people what a cool person you are. Insinuate yourself into their good graces, practice patience, and good things will happen. I guarantee. (Just ditch the tie.)

Hiring for entry-level positions in the gaming industry?

Instead of:

1. Requiring 2-3 years of experience, which deters eager newcomers
2. Filtering out candidates based solely on their previous job titles
3. Attracting potentially problematic veterans 

Try this:

1. Focus on the potential for learning and growth.
2. Value diverse backgrounds, including self-taught skills 
3. Seek individuals ready to face challenges and contribute to growth.

By changing our approach to how we define qualifications for entry-level positions, we can open up the gaming industry to a wider, more diverse pool of talent. 

This change not only benefits the companies by bringing in fresh perspectives but also nurtures a more vibrant and innovative industry overall.

Frankly, it's just weird to demand prior experience for entry-level roles.  You know it.  I know it.

So let's stop doing it.

How can we help keep the supply of young talent flowing into our industry?

Two months ago, I was laid off from Riot Games. I decided to challenge myself to lead and be of service of others, so I became a certified sailboat skipper.

It feels amazing to accomplish a dream seemingly out of reach from my upbringing. But there were times when it asks serious questions about the core of our characters. 


𝐀 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞

We were horrified when we found ourselves driving dead on towards a wall of an island in a pitch-dark night passage. 

There was a lot of shouting. We needed to decide within seconds which side to turn when stopping was not an option. 

The course instructor took over the helm and performed an emergency tack. Neither the crew nor the hull was harmed, but I felt an extra dose of bitterness. 

I was in charge of that passage navigation.

"I am sorry. I made a mistake with our bearings and mistook this channel for another. That's where we should be. Let's continue the course," I said, trembling in my voice.

Recovering from the shock and correcting the course, we made it to the destination in time. We debriefed and celebrated and got closer as a team. 


𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯.𝐬. 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

I was very proud of my planning before the trip. It was thoughtful, visual, and seemingly easy to execute. I briefed the crew that we would arrive soon without complications.

When we headed into the darkness, it was a completely different story. 

𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥. 

Beacons became indistinct, and the silhouette of the islands was deceptive. Self-doubts replaced confidence for the crew, and the tension grew. 

As novices, we underestimated the challenge of night navigation. 


𝐀 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧

That night at sea was humbling, reminding me of my early days as a D&I Practitioner. 

Despite thorough planning based on data, we had to pivot based on hard feedback. 

The landscape looked different from my initial perception, but our work paid off as we saw changed hearts and minds after two years. Rioters appreciated the significance of our work.


I learned a few things from the both experiences: 

• Things will go wrong. Be cautiously optimistic and ready to change the plan anytime.

 • The sooner you acknowledge your shortcomings, the faster everyone can regain the confidence to turn things around. 

• Don't beat yourself up for it. Try to stay relaxed, which helps create an atmosphere of confidence onboard.

• The ending will be rewarding. We will come out as better people if we practice what we know in full.


With these thoughts in mind and thinking of the future journey I will embark on, the beacon afar is a little brighter. 

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺.

We're in Alpha! And we have some new partnerships to help us bring Loki to players around the world!

I've been investing in games for three years now, and so I'm doing what any good, respectable VC should do: launch a substack :) 

In all seriousness though, I think there's a lack of great, consistent writing on the games industry. I admire what Deconstructor of Fun, Naavik and recently Ryan K. Rigney have all done (Tom Cadwell has some gems at Riot R&D too), but we're nowhere near what the tech industry produces in the sheer volume / quality of content: cdixon, pmarca's archives, paul graham, avc, the list goes on and on. 

I'm still very early on in my journey. There's lots I don't know, and I'm sure half of what I write will be drivel. But I'm launching the Bird's Nest now, posting weekly every Monday, to spur more discussion about the industry we all love.

Biggest mistakes I noticed while reviewing resumes at Riot Games:

- Too long and lacked focus: The belief that a longer resume equals a better chance of getting noticed. This actually shows a lack of clarity and undervalues the hiring manager's time.
  
- Burying the relevant experience: When essential gaming experience or skills are hidden deep within a lengthy document instead of being front and center.
  
- Expecting the hiring manager to connect the dots: Applicants often include tangential experiences without clear relevance, making it challenging for me to see their potential fit quickly.
  
- Flashy, Wordy or Gaudy: The use of excessive colors, images, or filler words that distract rather than enhance the resume's message.

A good resume is concise, focused, and respects the reader's time. It fulfills the job's requirements in the first quarter of the document and prioritizes relevant experiences and skills. 

When applying for your dream job in the gaming industry or anywhere else, remember that quality trumps quantity. 

Keep it to one page, eliminate filler, and make your relevant skills impossible to overlook.

'Distributed' studio Possibility Space abruptly shut down by Prytania Media

If you see "Gearbox Publishing" as a past employer come across your desk for any job applications, please know that it means something special. 

Every person I've had the pleasure of working with at Gearbox Publishing carries with them drive, kindness, a strong sense of personal responsibility, and sheer love for the industry and the products we've worked on. Not a JIRA ticket or email went by that I didn't feel the enthusiasm radiating from these amazing individuals for the dev studios we supported along the way.

Gearbox Publishing was special in my eyes. It aimed to be "the most developer-friendly publisher in the world." I carried that mantra as I worked on those very publishing deals that would give indie teams a shot at getting their games both the funding and support they needed to realize their creative vision and create kickass experiences for players. 

The hardworking folks at Gearbox Publishing ALL carried that mantra to bring those games to market, with not only grit but also compassion. From beginning to end, inception to execution. 

They cared about the games we published. They really did.

Risk of Rain, Homeworld, Godfall, Tribes of Midgard, Eyes in the Dark, Blanc, Relic Hunters Legend. Just a few of the publishing titles I've worked on closely with the rest of the stellar Gearbox Publishing team.

So to anyone reading this: please know that the individuals let go as a result of Gearbox Publishing closing down due to the Gearbox/Take-Two deal get my recommendation wherever they apply. A whole host of amazing people, from marketing to comms to user research, are now back on the market; and any company would be LUCKY to have them. 

If you want to know more about any of these fantastic teammates, please reach out. I'd love to gush about how great they all were to work with, and what a beautiful team dynamic we all shared. 

And to my friends in Gearbox Publishing reading this: this is not your fault. This is somebody else's fault. This is NO reflection on you or your capabilities. As the games industry has proven for the last year, sometimes a layoff is as impersonal as a number on a spreadsheet. You ARE amazing, your job title does NOT define you, and you ARE capable of so much more than what you've already accomplished at this lovely publishing house. Please believe in yourself.

Brackeys's is back!  For those who don't know, he is one of the leading gamedev creators on Youtube.  

He's been on hiatus for about 3 years now, and just now returned with this video.

He observes that:
- Gaming is bigger than ever.
- It sucks that people are getting laid off.
- The industry is dominated by 2 game engines.

And his prediction is that the gaming industry will go FOSS (Free Open Source Software).  To support that, he is starting a new tutorial series on Godot Engine - the leading open source game engine.

Apparently, it's good enough that the guys and gals at Mega Crit are using it to build Slay the Spire 2!

I love this.  Even though it seems a bit bleak out there, Brackeys is back in the fight.  

FOSS will be a force to be reckoned with in game development, much like how Linux is a force in enterprise software development.  I had forgotten that Android is powered by Linux, for instance...

Though I'm not a developer, I'm definitely going to check out the tutorials.  Who knows, maybe I am a developer and been waiting for just. the. right. opportunity?!?

I spent my time as a "linkedIn lurker" connecting with producers, designers, and developers and reading their content, but who was I to interact with anything since I hadn’t yet had my footing in the industry?

I pushed myself into an imposter syndrome mindset.

When I attended Game Developers Conference (GDC), I was immediately met with overwhelming positivity towards my interest in the industry and welcomed by those of all ranks. I connected with students who were also enthusiastic about trying to enter the space and veterans interested in my marketing insight. Not only was I getting my foot in the door, but I was actually feeling like I belonged.

Then a couple of days ago I had the honor of joining a discovery call with an outstanding career coach who helped me identify my pain points and determine strategies to course correct and move beyond them. Shoutout to Chris T. for continuing to make me feel like I deserve to be in this space and capable of making it despite the unfortunate time it's undergoing. If you’re not already familiar, I would recommend chatting with him in a heartbeat if you’re ‘stuck’ and need some direction. 

The gaming industry is built on a foundation of community and support, just like it is for the players. Everyone is trying to find their sweet spot so they can do their best (level up) and those who’ve been in the game for a while come down to the lower ranks to help out the noobs. (Chris you’re a smurf IRL, but unlike in games one we fully endorse lol)

Here’s a pic of me with the wizard himself, Willem Delventhal from Indie Game Academy, giving me a ‘quest’ at GDC. Indie Game Academy is literally a community of people supporting others on how to produce and release your own games. I guess you could say they make ‘walkthroughs’. I had been hunting him down ever since I ran into someone who told me the tale of the wizard with an exclamation on his head. To me, it symbolizes my new journey of making it in the industry. 😌
