Leaders, here’s the trap: most spend more time catering to bottom performers than multiplying top ones.

A critial part of the role is aligning people to systems around goals, standards, and routines. This means you must be clear on your values and the performance needed for each role. 
 
Here is what you should focus on: 

→ Replace “culture fit” with culture add + values alignment.
→ Define a small set of non-negotiable behaviors (values in action).
→ Ask: How will this person add to the team and skill while upholding our standards and values?

Now the hard question: Where should you as a leader spend yourr time?

If you dont know let me tell you what research suggest on how you should spend your time: 

→ Top performers (“A players”): Multiplying them gives disproportionate returns. They are your culture carriers. Give them coaching, exposure, stretch roles.

→ Bottom performers: You cannot ignore them. If the gap is skill or clarity invest early coaching. But if the gap is values, effort, or attitude too much time here drains you and starves your high performers.

The principles I live by, which I have found to increase my own engagement, reduce burnout, and give me a sense of reward is found in this:

Coach the coachable.
Multiply your multipliers.
Set a floor with standards, accountability, and consequences.

Key principle: You can teach skill. You cannot teach values to someone who refuses to live them.

And here’s the danger:
When values and performance both misalign, leaders mistakenly reward low performers while high performers burn out and leave. What’s left is a culture that can’t break through the glass ceiling forever stuck under the ceiling.

Leaders: your job is not to please everyone.
It’s to protect the culture, uphold the standards, and multiply performance.

This means you will have someone unhappy people on your team. And thats okay if its people that dont align with the values and standards you have set. Remember values and vision only unite those that share those values and visons. 

It cannot be forced.

You ever chase something so hard only to realize when you finally get it…it’s not even what you wanted?

That’s been sitting heavy with me lately.

I look around and see so many people(myself included at times)—running after titles, promotions, bigger paychecks. And sure, it looks good on the outside. But if you’re not careful, you’ll wake up one day with the job you wanted…and a life you never asked for.

Here’s what normally happens:
	•	The promotion comes with more hours that pull you away from your kids.
	•	The paycheck comes with pressure that keeps you awake at night.
	•	The title comes with expectations that eat your weekends alive.

And all those things we thought would bring us joy? They start to feel heavy. Because deep down we didn’t stop to ask:

➡️ Do I even want the life that comes with this success?

I’ve been learning that it’s not wrong to have career goals. I love pushing, achieving, and building. But career goals should never kill life goals in the process.

Because life goals matter too.
	•	The kind of parent you want to be.
	•	The kind of marriage you want to nurture.
	•	The kind of peace you want when you wake up and when you lay down at night.
	•	The kind of joy you want to feel in the small, ordinary moments.

I’ve started asking myself hard questions:
	•	What actually fills my cup?
	•	Where do my strengths and passions collide?
	•	How do I want to spend my time—not just at work, but in life?

And here’s what I’m discovering: success that costs you your presence, your peace, and your purpose isn’t really success. It’s a tradeoff that leaves you with money in the bank but emptiness in your soul.

Self-leadership starts here—being honest with yourself about what you truly want on the other side of your goals.

So yeah, chase the goals. Build the career. But don’t lose your life in the process. Don’t sacrifice the things money can’t buy.

Because at the end of the day…what good is climbing the ladder if it’s leaning against the wrong wall?

One day the title will fade. The money will be spent. The applause will die down.
But your kids will still remember if you showed up. Your spouse will still know if you were present. And your soul will still ask if you lived a life that mattered.

Ask yourself now—do I really want the life that comes with the success I’m chasing? Because regret doesn’t show up at the starting line…it waits for you at the finish line…..

You could spend years grinding…late nights, long shifts, flawless execution. And still:

→ Your boss notices outcomes, not effort
→ Senior leaders look at influence, not hours
→ HR looks at how you lead people, not how busy you are

Hard work only matters if the right people believe it matters. And getting promoted is a game of influence. So put the two together and make them care:


1. Speak their language.
	•	Your boss doesn’t care that you worked all weekend. They care if you delivered results that move the business.
	•	Senior leaders don’t care about your effort. They care if you can scale yourself through others.
	•	HR doesn’t care about loyalty alone. They care if you build strong teams, develop people, and create a positive culture—because that’s what makes you promotable.


2. Tie your work to results.
Nobody promotes effort. If your work doesn’t connect to measurable business impact, you’re replaceable. Results are the currency of promotions, you have to prove ROI on yourself.


3. Quantify the risk of doing nothing.
What happens if leadership doesn’t promote you?
→ Will they lose top talent you’ve developed
→ Will the team’s performance stall without your leadership
→ Will engagement and culture take a hit

People fear loss more than they crave gain…..use that.

Spending years grinding without learning how to sell your value is like cooking a seven-course meal for someone who isn’t hungry. You’ll pour everything in, and they’ll push it aside.

If leadership isn’t bought in, that’s not just a them problem. It’s also a you problem.

So communicate, frame, and sell your leadership impact like your next promotion depends on it….because it does.

Here’s the truth no ambitious professional wants to hear:

Your greatest strength, your drive can also be the thing that burns you out.

🔥 The fire burns you when:
	•	You work yourself to exhaustion. Remember: you can’t pour from an empty cup.
	•	You treat rest as unproductive. What you don’t rest, won’t last.
	•	You think more hours = more results. Overwork isn’t a badge of honor, it’s a red flag.

And to the ambitious leader pushing back on this…
Your “fire” may not be ambition at all.
It might be fear dressed up as ambition.

Working nonstop doesn’t prove you’re committed.
It proves you’re out of alignment.

Ask yourself: Do more hours really create more impact?
And if they do, at what cost?

The best leaders I know aren’t burned out.
They’re aligned with their priorities, disciplined with their energy, and winning at work and at home.

Let me be real with you and tell you that how you spend your time is going to determine the quality of your life. Period.

And here’sa truth to live by. The most important person you’ll ever lead is yourself. Everything else flows out of that. If you don’t get your priorities straight, your time will get hijacked. And when your time is wasted, so is your life.

So here’s what I tell people I coach—make time to figure out your priorities:
	•	Non-negotiables: the 1–3 things you will not compromise on.
	•	What’s required: the stuff you’ve got to do every single day—build your routine around it.
	•	What brings a return: the high-value tasks—block time for them.
	•	What brings a reward: the passions that fuel you—invest in them.

Everything flows from your choices. How you prioritize what matters will directly shape your life and leadership.

The truth is things only get better when you get better at how you prioritize and use your time.

We were the same age. But they were making $150K, and I was grinding 20 extra hours for 35% less.

That’s when everything changed for me.

I realized working harder, putting in more hours, and saying yes to everybody wasn’t the answer.
Delivering results is good, but if those results never reach the right rooms with the right people, it’s all for nothing.

So I asked them straight up:
Me: “How did you move up so quickly and get this opportunity?”

Them: “Honestly, we’re the same age. The difference is I got connected with someone who believed in me and gave me an opportunity. Therefore, within three years that connection led me here.”

I couldn’t believe it. They had moved up every single year and by their late 20s were already in a General Manager role making $150K base. Meanwhile, I was still grinding 10–20 more hours for less pay.

So I pressed further:
Me: “How did you even meet that person?”

Them: “The same way me and you are talking right now. Delivering results was a basic requirement, but what mattered more was communicating those results. I listened to the problems my leaders were facing, and I found solutions. That’s how I became a partner, not just a worker.”

That conversation flipped a switch for me.

The lesson was clear:
Yes, results matter. But exposure to the right people changes everything.
Exposure where you’re clear on your skills, the problems you solve, and the value you bring. That’s how leaders get elevated.

That moment reframed my entire approach to leadership and career growth.

If you only react to what is urgent, you will only live a reactive life.

This hit me at an amazing event with Quentin Gause and The Malchut Impact Collective  Impact Collective. The conversations, the environment, and the reminders made me realize something: urgency always feels louder than importance.

But the truth is—most of the things that are truly important in your life won’t scream for your attention. They won’t sting if you ignore them today. You won’t see the consequences tomorrow. But over time, what feels optional compounds.

Skipping one workout doesn’t hurt. But years of skipping? That can lead to health issues you never saw coming.
Neglecting one friendship doesn’t feel like a big deal. But decades of not investing in people? That can leave you lonely and without community.

The things that are not urgent today will demand your attention tomorrow. And by then, the cost is much greater.

At this event, I had to check myself. I realized I’ve been choosing urgent tasks over important growth—things that could move me forward in the long run. Being in the right room gave me perspective that urgency won’t.

We must stop sacrificing what’s important for what’s just urgent.

It’s time to be intentional. To invest in the small, consistent actions today that will bring a lifetime of return tomorrow.

Without stillness in the morning, everything will feel like a rush during the day.

Leaders, the demand on you is high. The pressure and pace are great. And the pull of others’ needs is constant.

This is the reality of leadership: people often exempt your human side. They forget you have needs too. The same frustrations they’re dealing with—you’re carrying as well.

That’s why quiet time in the morning and a routine of stillness aren’t optional. They’re vital. You must carve out space to prepare your mind before the world starts pulling at you.

There’s no question—you’ll spend all day pouring into others. The only question is: what will you be pouring from?
Why not pour from peace, knowledge, and a full cup?

For me, nothing I do is as important as how I start my day. Here are 3 non-negotiables I use to fill up before I pour:

🔹Stillness — grounding myself through deep breaths, affirmations, and devotion time.

🔹Gratitude — anchoring to at least 3 things I’m thankful for.

🔹Learning — reading on leadership, the one craft I’ve decided to master.

To achieve stillness, you must be intentional. Because once the world wakes up, it will demand everything from you.
